  1. Agree with all the above Plus.....here in the UK stocks of factory ammo can be patchy even if you find one that works. I teach reloading and all of my students seem far happier to be independent of factory offerings despite the outlay on kit.
  2. This is just my 10p worth. A 10x scope will be enough to get you hitting at 1000 yards. I mostly shoot 1000 at about 20x with a S &B PM2..... plenty of mag , not too much re mirage, decent eyebox , ni e and light image. Higher mag will cost you in £ , image will be dimmer and eye position more critical....obviously scopes will vary re glass quality and image brightness ...usually related to how your budget can stretch. Hi mag is nice to have but I bet you shoot mostly with it backed off to between 20x and 30 x.
  3. Centre-fire bolt action is yes. Rim fire not .
  4. I have posted before in praise of Tiff and his energy in setting this whole thing up. Having seen at first-hand the work and costs involved at the Roundhouse I am not surprised at the level of costs involved in PRL weekends BUT .... for my personal finances it has reached the point of being out of reach (see John MHs summary of all up costs...ouch!) The shooting is exciting and varied and the banter almost priceless...but money will always be an issue. I doubt that I could participate again unless it reverted to single day sessions. I still believe that the PRL with it's time pressures and general 'rush' to get through the COF does not sit well with the ELR which obviously has to have a schedule but not within the same deliberately pressured environment as PRL.... Just my view. I repeat the Tiff has my great admiration for being a driving force in getting this going in the UK
  5. More worrying is the supply of ranges drying up!
  6. Buy the lowest mount version that clears the handguard but you may still find that you need a comb raiser of some sort to get a decent cheekweld.
  7. It's more an issue of forward canted mounts for eye relief on an AR. Something like American Defense.
  8. You are entitled to your opinion but that doesn't make your opinion fact. The fact is that you can join FCSA OR ODRC and have access so there is no deprivation in any way shape or form.
  9. Pardon my cynicism if I anticipate a FUBAR.
  10. Well this was my reply to a good friend who was rightly raging about the recent premature capitulation of our shooting organisations who are now PROMOTING a cessation of lead shot usage. My concern is that their non-consulted (with membership) stance immediately puts pressure on lead use in rifle bullets. My friend says he is not unduly worried about that as there are good alternatives....I disagree....see my response below...... Rich...not convinced. Hunting as you say relatively very few bullets are used so where is the EVIDENCE of harm? When we get to target shooting the bullets are captured and periodically sifted out and the lead recycled (recycled = good!) Additionally, I believe that many if not most target shooters are using high BC heavy-for-calibre bullets for ballistic advantage. Equivalent weight copper solids WILL be significantly longer and could require tighter twist rates.....major rebarreling expense. Lathe-turned copper solids might ease the BC issue in a shorter bullet BUT these are hardly going to be affordable I think. I foresee rifle shooters suffering from this non- consulted stance and I am more than a little pissed-off.
  11. This could well be just my ignorance but why do you want such hi-mag for 25 yards?
  12. If it's of any interest I use 95g of N570 with the 250g scenars to get 2950fps from a 30 inch barrel. I hear what is said about the N5 series and barrel life but with a 338 you don't fire huge amounts unless you have deep pockets!
  13. Not sure that I would want technology to get to the point where all the shooter does is dial what he is told and take up the trigger BUT what an incredible bit of kit if the ShotShow claims are real-world! 10k USD puts it miles out of my pocket but I would LOVE to play with stuff like this. Range, multi-range wind calls, atmospheric and a ballistics solver in one package..... clearly the way things will converge on a single bit of kit.
  14. The same result can usually be had by letting the case 'dwell' for a second or two at the compression stage in order to have the brass set at the required bump.....depends on the state of the brass re work hardening. Either way FL Sizing should be a steady process in both press directions and not a snatch which additionally risks skewing the neck or even stretching out some of the bump on a rough up stroke of the expanded ball (if you use one)
  15. By the time it's been bashed into the rifling I would think that surface finish would not matter.
  16. Don't think its connected. What I read appeared to be from the charity commission.
  17. Defo after....the whole point of annealing is to make the brass take sizing with consistency as well as hopefully prolong it's useful life.
  18. Whole lot cheaper and do the same job....your call.
