crismaqsood
Hello everyone I decided to start training for competitions in F Class but I'm super indecisive on what rifle to go for. I want a 308 and, after a bit of research (and looking at my begginers budget) I'm divided between a savage 12 F-TR or a Bergara b14 HMR. I've also looked at a Remington 700 with a Accuracy International adjustable stock which I can stretch my budget to Are any of these suitable to train and start competing in F Class? Thank you
Kipper
We have approx 6 members all shooting very well with thier savage 12 FTRs . Excellent value for money in my opinion.
Re-Pete
Plus 1 for the Savage......we've had a model 12 FTR for 12 years now. With 308. 6BR, and 6.5x47 barrels, which are easy to swap. Three rifles for the price of one (well, maybe not quite....) Pete
crismaqsood
I do like the savage a lot. I've shot with the Palma model at bisley but I don't know if it's worth the price difference to the regular FTR
The Gun Pimp
The 308 Savage FTR is a great choice for starting in FTR - I don't think your other options come with that 30 inch barrel. The Savage laminate stock is plenty good enough.
Ronin
There’s a savage for sale (Nick 53) in the classifieds will need a barrel but it’s bang on the money for starting off
dorg
Pick up a good secondhand rifle , secondhand barnard actioned rifles are always cropping up , there's one on guntrader at the minute. New rifles plummet in value and once secondhand the values remain fairly static.
Re-Pete
The Palma stock is very desirable but a tad expensive......we went with a Form adjustable stock. If buying a used mod 12, bear in mind that the action screw centres on the older ones are different to the later versions. We discovered this when we tried to get a Palma stock for ours. shoppe
Savage ftr all day. It will suit you perfect. Mine was the first ten in the UK MANY years ago. It only got a new barrel a few years ago. Excellent value. I will post a link to a video on you tube posted by a friend when he had a few shots of mine years ago. J did not know he was filming it at first!

Mike C
Hi had a Savage Model 12 FTR for my first tiptoe into the FTR class. I think if I'd have persevered with it I could have started to get some pretty good consistent results. The problem for me was the stock, I think I just missed having a pistol grip. Also on my Savage the bolt had a bit of a sloppy firing pin hole which started extruding the primer up the annular space between firing pin and hole way below .308 max pressures. I believe this to be quite a common occurrence on some Savage PTA bolts and not necessarily a problem. The problem is you'll never know about this until you get one. Still, a damn good FTR rifle for the money and I actually liked the Acu-trigger.
Neil Harrison
Savage ftr is a solid option for starting out. I started out with a howa 1500 and factory ammo, soon after I started reloading and it became very accurate with 155s and 168s

Deserttech Europe
Brogan has just sold on here a super rifle that would have been perfect for you. I believe he has some other .308's. Drop him a PM. I will also ask about for you as there may be some others that are available. Ewen
Laurie
Re the Savage Model 12s, it seems we no longer have a UK Savage distributor. Edgar Brothers no longer includes Savage in its list of brands and a check with the manufacturer's website doesn't list us as having an importer. I wonder who ditched whom here. Edgars imposed savage (pun intended) price increases on every model in the range over the years they held the franchise, especially the Precision Series models. I wouldn't be surprised if sales volumes slumped as a result. When @The Gun Pimpand I first had dealings with these rifles in competition, also with Stuart Anselm trading as Osprey Rifles back then as a rifle builder specialising in Savages, they were great value, and new M12 actions could also be bought at a budget price for custom builds. I'm still running two Savage based comp rifles that started way back then, and until Dolphin appeared with its Nesika action rifles, the Savage FTR was one of the best and most affordable ways into the sport. Re-Pete
Does he still handle them? We could do with a replacement 308 bolt head for ours (also from Stuart). Pete
MichalS
Check out Sabatti. Their 11.5 twist 308's are extremely accurate with both 185 Bergers and 175 Sierras/Scenars. Like 0.3MOA accurate.... Michal
