Viht N555 - The Ultimate Creedmoor Powder?

Stealing the title from Viht’s own marketing - but they claim N555 is their new 2020 release powder specifically for the 6 & 6.5 Creedmoor, 260 Rem, .284 etc

Anyone got their hands on any yet? Where do we think it sits in the market? Will it live up for the unobtainium H4350? More temp stable than RS62?

Fingers crossed its as good as they market it!

As soon as I see the words "high energy" used in conjunction with a powder, I start to wonder about barrel life. Generally, ya get nuthin' for nuthin'..

Beyond that, if it truly is more temp stable and lower fouling, that's a combo that would appeal to some shooters.

I too immediately wondered it’s going to rinse the barrel, being another N5xx powder.

However, looking at the data sheets it’s energy is significantly lower than all the other N5xx series of powders at only 3700kjoules. The really bad N5xx powders are up around 4000kjoules (same as Varget..interesting for a single base powder).

It might be that this new N555 is cooler burning, thus better for barrels, but then I’m confused why it’s considered ‘high-energy’. Ok it’s impregnated with Nitroglycerin, but really the whole point of the ‘high energy’ powders is to provide more oomph, no?

With N555 seemingly providing the same kind of oomph as the single based N1xx series of powders...what’s the point of it?

I agree with Chris NZ, I wish they had brought out N155 rather than N555.

+1

I'll be sticking with RS62.

There was not a lot wrong with the Hogddon H4350 and RS62 is pretty darned close to that.  Not a lot wrong with N150/160 either.

Vhit 160/142 SMK at 2985 fps. Verified on Magneto speed and Labradar.

Small primer lap brass with small diameter pin in AXMC

26" Sassen cut barrel.

Nice cool powder, with no perceivable wear in the throat at 600 rounds.

Wont be bothering with 555.....

Dave hasn't let this info out yet..

After reading this again I looked on the viht reloading again tonite to see what the load Is for the 6.5x47 and they don't show one..

N160 is only slightly slower burning than H4350..

We are missing a trick here with them blistering velocities.

I think the difference between the 47 and the creed is about 1mm

I am running 44.7gr of n160 for 2860fps with 147 eld in my creedmoor

I will try later to see how many grains of N160 the 47 case will hold up to the neck junction..

41.5grs of RS62 is up about that far and is a compressed load.

Have you tried RS62 and what was your max load..?

Nope sorry only n160, charge weight test went up to  46gr before hitting pressure  (maybe over can’t remember)

I have a friend shooting 130gr in his 47 with n160 and he is getting around 2900 with a low charge weight

Nearly 3000fps with a 142SMK from a 26” barrel! That does sound awfully high.

I know Viht data is very anaemic but that’s way off the chart. I guess a very long throat, thus seated well out of the case, may help.

46gr with 147Eld was 2960 in mine not seated to long, still fitted in standard ai mag length
