Friday at the BSS

It was a pleasant day at the British Shooting show on Friday. Traffic Management was conducted well and was free flowing in and out and I found that the number of folk who have walked straight off the hill was down on recent years.

I stopped by Tier One who were displaying a new Tikka T3 dovetail compatable set of rings. These have seen a refreshing update and now look like the picatinny rings with the updated bubble level. They make a financially viable alternative to having to buy a picatinny rail.

Another new item I sought out was the GRS Berserk stock. This is the new composite stock from the company well regarded for the laminate stocks that several companies are using on OEM rifles. Weight for the Berserk was around 1400g, no Leighton weight by any means. It uses the same adjustable butt plate and cheek piece as the laminate range. With an SRP of £350 I can see these being popular.

I stopped by Czech Tactical Pursuits and caught up with David many will know him at DS1 on UKV and Craig who are offering range packages in the Czech Republic catering for Pistol and Semi-Auto rifles. They were displaying some very nice accessories from accross Europe including one piece picatinny mounts and bi-pods. Also on display were some nice range matts and leightwight rifle slip combinations, great when a drag bag is OTT. I bought a nice scope and muzzle protector that also can be used to carry the rifle when no bag is a required.

I was going to say hi to Baldie in the AI stand but every time I walked past he was engrossed in conversation.

Something that really caught my eye was the Mauser M12 Impact. Only available in .243 and .308 it has a 60 degree three lug bolt that is slick, picatinny rail as standard, fluted barrel, substantial composite stock, removable steel bottomed double stack magazine which you can top load. The release catch appears well recessed but still accessible with gloves. With a SRP of £1150 it will give the Tikka T3 a run for the money.

Kahles had the updated k624i with MOAK reticle. I really liked the updated scalloped turrets, sadly they had no left hand windage turret scopes with them. They didn't have any SKMR reticles in the display which was disappointing however the central dot in the MOAK is the same size. I could see one of these finding its way into my cabinet. I was very impressed.

Just coming round from a crazy four days away.

I have to say, I haven't enjoyed myself as much in years.

I saw 10 minutes of the show, late sunday afternoon, simply couldn't get off the stand, so couldn't comment at all on what it was like, or who was there.

What I did see was a very large amount of shooters, all enjoying themselves .

Lovely to mee a whole host of people from UKV and some for the first time , especially Mauser, Spud and DS1.

Business is going to be crazy the next few weeks.

The trade in general seemed very upbeat, and excited about the future.

A great show for me personally.

I must say as my first BSS, what a great show, just about everyone I spoke too was nice, polite and friendly. Honestly it was a pleasure speaking to people.

I would just like to say thank you to everyone who stopped by the stand.......I don't really know what the rest of the show looked like as I only got to a couple of stands (mainly the AI stand to pick Daves brains). In fact I don't believe it but I bought nowt, just no time.

Breacher stopped by with his bipod....excellent bit of kit and I got a look at Cad Monkeys clamp on another stand also excellent kit

We will be there next year.......excellent show.

We were there on Friday was us, and thoroughly enjoyed it. No problems getting in or out, no queues for tickets and no queues for scran. We noticed a distinct dearth of specialist gunmakers but factory standard offerings were there in multitudes and everyone was very friendly and helpful. Highlights of our day were:

1. A visit to the Alan Rhone stand where a very pleasant ooman spent a great deal of time letting us fondle their range of Schultz and Larsen rifles and explaining to us the pros and cons of each model

2. Chatting with the oomans displaying the Desert Tactical Arms rifles and hearing from them the pros and cons of each model

We found it very useful that at both stands we were told what the rifles weren't good for as well as what they did well. We've narrowed down our choice of our next rifle to either a S&L or a DTA and so it was very useful to get to pawdle them and hear frank, honest opinions as to which best suited our needs.

I enjoyed my visit on the Saturday. I had a great chat with Baldie about AI rifles and calibres - many thanks for taking the time.

Other highlights for me were: the new Schmidt & Bender 5-45 PM2; the Vortex Golden Eagle 15-60 and their new scope caps; the DCR triggers and custom rifles; Form Rifle Stocks from Exeter; the Tier One prototype tactical bipod; the Ruger Precision Rifle; and the new Weihrauch HW110.
