    Magpies

excellent ruger , getting 3 is outstanding but even better with air ! i salute you sir . im having trouble with local cats atm , keep using my rear garden and drive as a shitting / hunting ground even an airsoft toy avoiding face/eyes and ' non lethal ' they come back, there 5-6 i have seen and prob a lot more i haven't . tried to block all entrance but they get in little buggers . i hope to be out on the maggies soon .
  2. hi , id sacrifice 1 or 2 cases , set up the turner and don't take too much in a pass and like no i deer keep it cool not hot itl start to sort of gall or rough cut . once you think the brass is cut to your 12 ? thou seat a bullet in it then re measure the overall . i assume your using an expander mandrill ? ill bet 1 or 2 of them case mouths will had a wee dent in . cutting depth of cut is also really important . there is an post on this very site about this that goes in to detail which id advise to read , it may be in the handloading section - named neck turning how to etc , i appreciate your not a beginner but its worth a look - some tips you may not know . all the best

    Magpies

well i may as well post here , hope your all well and doing alright , spring / summers here and its my favourite time of year to hunt corvids , the farmer complains every time i pull up and chat to him - especially about the ravens , but its the carrions and magpies that are persistent predators and he wants them gone . had my first outing on a farm i hadn't been to since late last year , and iv shot on this farm now for alot of years . its my favourite place to go the scenery is outstanding . i love hearing the lambs bleeting and you get that fresh spring smell in the air ! know what i mean ? its good exercise too. before i went i didn't expect to see much as all the years iv shot it iv thinned out most of the magpies that were in that area and the crows were soo wary they didnt use the ground that much the last couple of years as id shot many of there comrades . many times i went round without firing a shot . there is one upside to that , no gun to clean . so i hadn't expected to see much on this visit , there was a large group of carrion on the main field quite far out and i had the 20practical not the 6br so i couldn't go silly - range wise and the wind was way more than id expected . i left the carrions to it and pushed to more smaller fields using the banks / hedges to conceal my approach and came across a smaller field with a bunch of jackdaws on the right where the field banked up , but strait out in front at around 175 yards there were several magpies , i had to crawl to clear the trees to get the shot . basically shot the first one perfect , and a 5minute wait and number 2 landed chattering away at his messed up friend , and that was #2 . at this point i was thinking hmm will i get another , and yup one more eventually came down and #3 was taken too . soo , my first outing and being uncertain that id see anything it turned out good for magpie thinning out . ps seen a beautiful roe buck at the large wood edge which is a bonus - no i wont be shooting it ! all the best
  4. i remember watching a good rust removal vid on youtube , i think they used white wine vinegar and soaked it (test pieces) over night . btw it wasnt a barrel . but im thinking if you were to be inclined to remove the rust , one could get one of them golf ball stacker thingys and cut to length , take barreled action out of stock , and leave it soaking in that tube muzzle down over nite making sure the level only went upto say the throat or just before ? just a thought . sounds like you have caught it before it bacame a real problem tho . atb
  5. almost , i use 23.1 of n133 but the 39G blitz . i was at 23.3 but it was a little hot so lowered slightly and seems fine . so in theory you could use this as a starting point ? then carefully work up . Or you could try the /Tac 20 loads as there as near as identical volume wise . Again work up from lower loads . i think either of these bullets are the go to varmint bullets for .20s . i went out tother day and managed 3 magpies and they were blitzed all right !
  6. just curious , i have a 527 cz but how can you tell the year of manufacture etc ??
  7. i think if your going to be shooting foxy the 22 bullets will be more suitable and will penetrate a bit deeper with 50 / 55 grain bullets . The .20cal 39 grain etc bullets are designed for smaller quarry and do explode faster / hence not penetrate as much as the 22 cal bullets . its a bit like when ppl say ill use 17 hmr for fox i kinda wince ! from personal experience the 22 cal is better . but if your only shooting a few fox per year then id go 20 . i dont hunt fox but will shoot if they present a shot with a .20practical but i only head shoot in the past at realistic ranges so at most i may kill 3 fox per year all on sheep pastures etc . The .20 cal for crows is just soo good as the bullets expand that much more its like the perfect caliber , but then again a 17 rem is also great for crow destruction ... but good luck hope you get sorted ))
  8. interesting read , although i don't shoot 223 atm , my first center fire was a 12 twist r700 and my go to bullets were 50/55 blitzkings , i didn't shoot that many foxes but those that i did were always head shots and they never exited ! spot on for me
  9. id go for the hornet of the one's mentioned or 17 fireball , both have good range and will moderate well , but have about 2x the distance of the 22rf . atb
  10. yeah you must be bottoming out the case mouth on the mandrel holder ? Case Solved ?? lol atb
  11. im in there boat too , id spend that sort of money on a custom build to suit what you need , the one thing that could affect what you choose is if you end up selling ? as the AI or other one would sell easier with more appeal to buyers . iv seen alot of rifles up for sale without even being used by the customers . its a crying shame really . But id def prefer a smith build an awsome rifle with some really tasty bits . atb
  12. its a great time of year to be out on varminting duties , i have had a massive break from air rifles until recently iv had a few outings and its pretty chilled and relaxing after hectic work . bagged 2 magpies . Like the fella john Darling , there my favourite quarry . No greys yet . THats a good day you had there , well done . atb
  13. hi , hope your all doing well , it may be a long shot but does anyone know rob's number at special stock services ? next to bowers. in shurdington .cheltenham ? i have his number in iphone but iphone broken . i know he doesnt advertise either so i cant source online . if this fails i will just have to drive and see him . But im thinking one or two of you smith's may know it . thanks . all the best .
  14. thanks for the info pops
  15. ok iv ordered one should be here mid week , pops i agree on ventilation , i always did the separation outside but where there is still some risk was when i had used a brush to clean the inside necks after tumbling , there must still be some residue or dust in there being forced to go airborne isn't good . so now the question - whats is the best soloution to use for the brass and what sort of temp should it be set at ? ty
  16. thnx catch im off to look at reviews of heated sonic cleaners - like you say i think iv accidentally breathed in the harmful dust before which could be contributing to odd health , i ideally need one for cleaning carburetta parts too so sounds ideal . iv always thought about getting one but never did .
  17. hi folks , after some advice on what i can use as theres new ish pins and now chips being used for brass cleaning . I must say i have a vibratory lyman turbo 1200 so the std type . Im unsure if i can use pins or chips in this - trouble is i think the chips are supposed to be used wet etc. if possible id like to switch to chips as they seem to be the best at brass cleaning . iv read quite alot of differing stuff but thought id just ask here to my darling forum members 😇 thanks in advance
  18. depends what are you wanting ? ultimate precision or average ? im not saying lee wont deliver good accuracy . iv used them when i started loading but i only use redding type S bushing for the neck . a body / shoulder bump die . and competition seating die . they will cost way more than lee but you know they produce straight ammo as in 3thou run out worst case . so it may be a price factor to it . lee is prob worth a try , as i could produce really good accuracy once you have found / tested a good few loads ? but good luck to it
  19. Nice mini mauser action, i though my 527 was a bargain 220 : ( what make is the rail ? id prefer this to say a factory tikka t3 . Nice looking rifle . simon6ppc on tube uses the tmk in his 223 sako with great affect. Think he's the same guy on here with same name . Good luck with development i hope its a tack driver.
  20. I doubt it - but think alycidon has a 20 br not quite the same but they fairly specialist cals - have you got one ? Or one on the way ?
  21. Hmm this got me thinking, as he starred in a short movie with Rosie Jones - im trying to put a caliber on Laurie Holland? Thoughts ? as i never met him - may he chime in ?
  22. Quite amazing but can't help thinking it may be less traumatic and quicker with a well placed bullet. I think most of us on here hunt in one way or another - just dont like seeing any animal suffer. eg- Why im against 17 for foxy personaly-.. But realize it may have a place in certain countrys / senario . Atb
