Not had reports back of loss of accuracy from one’s I’ve done By removing 4” of barrel, you are creating a stiffer “tube” and there will be different harmonics, in addition a change of mod may also affect harmonic resonance in the barrel. Expect VO to drop 50-75 fps all these factors may and I underline may affect your current loads accuracy Fine tweaking may be required to the load Notwithstanding the above, the other factor that may affect a shortened barrel is damage or pitting in the area where the nee muzzle will be which is something to consider when the barrel is assessed by your gunsmith The short answer is it might the long answer is above that 👍🏻 The only true test is to get it done and see

Welcome to the site Interesting question - the short answer is this forum and stalking directory for example are very much alive and well in the UK They also attract many international members I find these arenas totally different in terms of atmosphere and personal type to social media which to be brutally honest appears to attract the type who may cry openly having had a paper cut This site is a wealth of information and knowledge and there are many highly experienced people from many facets of shooting who will contribute and help The other “go to” forum for me would be Snipers Hide whoxh has been running for nearly thirty years Some negativity does get banded about with regards the hide , but if you steer clear of the Bear pit and political forums there are people with encyclopaedic knowledge of their chosen subject Tge search facility alone is worth being a member, because most things have been done and recorded there 😀

I own a few but shoot two regularly ATX PGW Coyote The coyote is the equal of the ATX but does not have the ability to change barrels without a barrel clamp and action wrench Im also biased towards the Coyote as it’s unique in that it’s in a PSE e tac But the original question wasn’t about anything other than A I rifles 😀

I think the ATX is pretty much perfect in terms of adjustability and a panacea for all round use the AT ans Ax are a little high in their chassis and whilst I’ve owned and used Aw and Ax extensively for killing deer in intensive culling situations and competitions - they don’t fit me perfectly The ATX does - it doesn’t need the bonded chassis and “Chuck out of plane and still shoot “ ruggedness I don’t think any civilian really “needs” that I’d be happy to put an ATX side by side with any of the other models - I’m sure it would be their equal

Alan - thanks for the reply - to expand a little on my list so I or anyone else don’t appear to come across as, “mean” if a client is asked to contribute towards the cost of a one off reamer purchase The last chamber reamer and guage set I bought in the UK (6 months ago) was £316 Prior to that I bought four reamer sets and guages - again a UK source, the cost being just under £1500 (12 months ago ) All the above were common or about to be common cartridges with perceived popular appeal I’ve been doing rifle work since 2007 and in that time span (16 yrs) carried out 30-50 rebarrels or builds per year every year During this period I’ve never been asked for 221 fireball and for instance can count on one hand the number of times I’ve been asked for a niche cartridge (6mm Rem being one instance and 338-06 another ) Both times the customer and I came to an agreement on the supply and ownership of the reamer In one instance the reamer was supplied for 50% of its value which I think fair considering it’s only been used for one job, on the other the client supplied it and it remains their property I have a few reamers that clients own so that their work is carried out using only their reamers - this is a common practice both here and in the US - none of these reamers are listed for use on my web page - but the other forty or so that I have, are. There are some calibres I don’t work on .17 and .20 for example and I refer those enquiries to colleagues who are kitted out for this work At the end of the day, a quality reamer and guage set costs what most rifle builder charge for a re barrel job and let’s face it none of us work for nothing otherwise bills wouldn’t be paid

That’s true alan but not many clients are willing to absorb the cost of reamers and gauges that are not in a riflesmiths inventory for a one off build Different if the client is shooting in competitive circles and they want “their own reamer” for their own barrel work The other thing to consider with the op request is even if a rifle smith has that reamer in stock may not preclude the client to use that individual if they had or have a poor reputation for instance or history of using inferior products / practices

There is an ATX for sale on here buy it - sell the creedmoor barrel and swap for 308 one

Been having a bit of a clean up of the office found a bundle of CD Rom discs from Corbin (bullet swaging, twist rate calc, bullet design, paper patch calc etc etc) from when I dabbled in bullet making - a real rabbit hole ,,,, and two discs for the (then) excellent Perry Systems Ex Bal system which was at the time cutting edge - you could even place the darn thing on a PDA and carry it about - go figure ! The Corbin discs are circa 1998 I think Exbal - circa 2001? If anyone is genuinely interested in these pieces of ballistic history I’ll send them to you gratis

Not sure it’s viable without some kind of reducing spacer set up that would lock into the existing long action mag inlet and hold the short action magazine The alternative is to alter a long action magazine which would also be problematic Thr simple and sensible option would be to sell the chassis and buy a short action one that’s suitable for the cartridge
