If you could choose one caliber for foxes, what would it be?
Richiew replied to Aussie Foxer's topic in Varminting
22lr for very close around livestock. 17 hmr upto 100 yards 223 for everything else to 200 yards depending on night vision and scope quality. 22-250 seems to be barrel burners and don’t suit the heavies as well as the 223 . 1:8” twist tikka shoots 52 grain bullets upto 77 grain heavies all very well. Favourite is the 73 grain Berger when in stock, otherwise it s a 73/75 hornady eldms. -

Alan Rhône do bolt on or screw on / in flush cap swivel mount s made by recknagel or era tactical . Something might fit the bill. -

Looked at the AI ATX chassis and think the front part of the stock may be too long for my 20” barrel with a wildcat compact mod . Spuhr do one with a 13” front stock for this reason. Wouldn’t want to butcher a brand new piece of alloy with a hacksaw lol -

Hi Giles thanks for the info . I’m still pondering on what to do, there’s some lovely systems about but would love a thumbhole AI AT stock . Seen the spuhr and mdt versions but they are pricey. Prefer a folder to easily remove the bolt. Have a great weekend -

Thanks for the reply. I’ll check it out and do some more digging. cheers -
I’ve found that in both 223 and 308 all my different bullet shapes all fit perfectly at the same case base to ogive dimensions. 2.234” in 308 works fine for stumpy 155s through to longer 178 eldms and 185 juggernauts. Only change is the total length and whether they will fit the AI MAG 2.960”. cheers

No info for Berger bullets but this seems to be near top end of hornady 230 A- tip load according to viht web . 79.5 for hornady 230 bullet or 80.6 of n570 for 220 Berger. High 2800s fps

N568 seems made for your calibre, N 570 will give a little extra speed. Fill a case to the start of the neck taper and weigh that and see if it fits in with the reloading data. Most of my best loads are around this point, no matter what powders I try .
-
Viht 165/568 , to 170/570 . Looking at the web page to get speed it’s the N 5 series that gives the best performance. Possibly choose what your local supplier has in stock.

Eldm 178s in 308 at 2660 fps work great for me. 1/2” group at 300 m . N150 44.5 grain

490 usd is £392 plus a covert charge .

No import duty from Canada , I just paid online and it was cheaper than originally expected. New v4 is 3D printed parts so a bit cheaper. Came directly to my house.

Kestrel drop with StrelokPro

Nice reply mate had a giggle at that . Thanks for brightening up a dull Sunday oop north . was thinking of putting something in the ammo box to read powder temp , a little cheap thing off eBay might work. Mate of mine uses all the new stuff shooting with mr Utting. Happy at 600 yards but would like to be blob on at a 1000 . So every little variable counts . Also wifey is pestering me for birthday ideas so thought it might be worth a shot . -
Case prep
Richiew replied to Ralpharama's topic in Target Shooting & Informal Long Range Shooting Practice
Sinclair and Lyman do a very nice vld inside chamfer tool. The Sinclair one can be used in a drill , and the Lyman one can be used on their case prep electric multi station unit so doing primer pocket, inside and outside all in one unit . Rcbs do one similar. Giraud trimmers do all the trimming and trim to length but it’s not the same inside angle as a vld trimmer so might need that extra bit of work to get it to a better angle for long boat tailed bullets. Some new lapua brass needed mandrel sizing then a neck size before its first use . Loaded some up with out doing this and found it hard to seat the bullets and it left a ring round the ogive so went back to basic redding die for better results. Forster seater die works best with lower neck tension setup . Tight necks gave an ES of 12 fps the looser ones which I normally load give a variance of 7 fps . -
V4 trickler is a bit hit and miss with N150 even after playing around with settings and a washer under the back rubber mount , perfect with N135 though. Usually drops a bit too much just in the final trickle so dump it and try again. Have done all the calibration s etc and played around with the settings for main and trickle and also where it changes to trickle. Got the updated version too. Still quicker than the old way .

Valkyrie rifles ??

Now that is a tidy bench . Top class primer there .
-
Happy with the rcbs auto prime. Although loading up the tube does add an extra step in the reloading process. Makes life easier than a handheld device. Probably safer in case a primer goes off as it’s not going to be near to your body and would deflect the blast upwards towards the ceiling .

Nowthen mate the way things are going I would keep them just in case. -
Remember T-cut . Should do the job. Or brasso .

Castrom knives and a eka swing blade. Otherwise a leatherman does most jobs but needs a good clean afterwards.
