Three of us had Century to ourselves this morning.....light winds and good light. Four hours at 600 yds on an electronic target........worked out at £15 each. Can't understand why it's not more popular...............(I live 50 miles down the M3, and I get here once a fortnight.) Re-Pete

We have two Annies...............one is 50's vintage Supermatch 54, the other 70's Match 54. No idea how many rounds have been through them, but both shoot better than we can. (And the older one likes SK Std., which is one of the cheapest 22LR ammo's around). One was £175 from a dealer at the Phoenix a few years ago, and the other was £50 from a club member who was giving up. You can't really go wrong with Anschutz, provided you do the usual inspection for barrel bulges etc. Re-Pete

I put a 6.5x47 together using a Tikka M595 off Guntrader for £295, a GRS Hybrid stock ready inletted for £625, and a Lothar 30" 8 twist barrel blank, £300, plus £300 for chambering and proof. Excellent 1000yd rifle using 123 grain or 136 grain Scenars. Bear in mind that the 6.5 Swede is an old hunting calibre, and not widely used by the target shooting fraternity. Re-Pete

Sounds like he/she REALLY knows the rifle, and how to read the wind. It backs up my comments on another thread where everyone was getting a bit anal about MV, ES, and SD.................at the end of the day, it's group size that matters, and your ability to put the centre of the group in the right place. What Baldie said.............with a decent barrel etc., the 223 is very capable, but only if you feed it properly. Pete

If you want that kind of performance up to 600yds, first choice has to be a 6BR with an 8 twist barrel..............plus 105 Scenar "L"'s, RS52 powder, Lapua brass, and KVB-223M primers. A 30" barrel is nice for trying to keep 'em in the F-class 4 ring at 1000yds. On Stickledown, that can be hard, but great fun all the same................ Re-Pete

CG Jackson trigger is 2-stage and adjustable..............and very nice. My 223 was originally built as a TR, (the rules allow 223 or 308), and came with aperture sights, thumbhole stock etc., but no way could it compete with the 308. I bought it for informal target practice which it does very well. Re-Pete,

223's are great fun, especially when you get in to reloading. There's so much stuff to try out. But be warned, the wind will do your head in ? Mine's an M595 with a 30" 8 twist barrel, CG Jackson trigger set to 450grams, and a GRS laminate stock. I load to 3050fps for 1000yds with SMK 80 grainers, and 2800fps for 600yds using Lapua brass and KVB-223M primers, powder is RS52. On a still day, it'll shoot <2 moa at 600 yds. Pete

69grainers will only work on a flat calm day at 600yds. The least breath of wind, and it suddenly goes pear-shaped (yep, we've been there....) If you have an 8 twist barrel, try 80grain bullets. SMK's work well in mine, as do JLK's. Even kept 7 out of 10 of them within the F-class 4 ring at 1000yds on one memorably flat calm frosty morning. Memorable for Stickledown, that is............even when the flags are still, there can be turbulence, especially if you're on lanes 45-50. Pete

I doubt it's a kosher 70's Omega for £200.............loads of fakes out there. do some research and you will be surprised what the genuine high end old bangers go for. Do you have access to a borescope? I've seen a new 223 Savage barrel that was deeply pitted in the last 12 inches before the muzzle. There were gaps in the lands and a very poor crown................ this didn't shoot. Re-Pete

I've been booking lanes at Bisley roughly once a fortnight since 2007, and I've found that when a marker is good, he/she is very good, and when you get a bad one, it's a bloody frustrating waste of time/ammunition/diesel............... That said, I can count the very bad experiences on the fingers of one hand, and I've always made a point of "bunging" the good markers. Asking for known good individuals when booking also helps. I've also hefted the frames on Century, and a slightly built teenager might well have a problem marking high shots, or even lifting the frames......... I think that in the main, they do a good job. That's why we mostly use a highly competent marker hired privately............... RePete

The point is if you can't trust the marker absolutely, then you're wasting your time and money. If they don't mark accurately and give good feedback, they simply shoudn't be doing it. RePete
