There's alot of chat hear mentioning hand loaded ammunition.. do they mention Factory ammo at all? Is a tuner beneficial then where other factors aren't tunable?

I started watching the video but it got a bit deep for my tired brain and I fell asleep 😅

😂

I think the consensus on the video was that wrt factory ammo other factors overwhelm any possible effects from a tuner

Thanks Vince, hope your keeping well.

After reading Al's response,  it provided an excellent overview and answered questions that I was unsure about the tuner/muzzle brake I have.  The main one being  do you tune or have you tuned during a competition.  After Al's answer (via SMS)   'the penny dropped'!

Cheers Al

I have two f open rifles with tuners I’ve never moved them from zero ones a 300wsm the other is a 7=270 wsm both shoot really well. What I’m interested in what’s the latest thinking wether the tuner is set in front of the crown or behind  it’s on any adjustment?
Mine both sit in front but I’ve noticed the Americans all sat back behind the crown.

Carbon build up that you can't see easily or remove without taking the tuner off.

I’ve taken the tuner off after pencil marking the position then cleaned and re fitted after every days competition.

my new 300wsm has no tuner but the same barrel profile it’s yet to be tested and run in so I will see.I really would go for a behind the the crown tuner next time I have a new barrel fitted

Hi All

I am a rimfire bench rester and went through the pain and frustration  of the ammunition  batches changing and then not working in my shooting platform - as it is unviable to reload .22LR it became clear after thousands of rounds of testing that most rimfire manufacturers actually produce very consistent ammunition and it is our own individual barrels that do not match it - after trying to get a tuner for my barrel  in the uk - custom made to fit without gunsmithing it became clear that was a non starter - so I decided to do something about it and started to test and build a local product to benefit all ! - All I can say is the results speak for themselves.

Please see the result of the final products after exhaustive testing.

Please feel free to contact me with any questions

Regards

Johann

Regardless of what anybody else believes or finds tuners do make a difference, in my case anyway.

As for effectiveness on centrefire rifles I offer no evidence or opinion.

Both my two .22lr bench rest rifles benefit from rounder groups and less vertical spread when a tuner is correctly set, note I say correctly. The impact of a tuner can be further shown by not setting it up correctly leading to an increase in vertical spread.

If tuners don’t work then the marketing gurus have had a field day, just observe the number of rifles fitted with tuners at any NSRA/WRABF benchrest competition.

I’m afraid that I must somewhat disagree with the statement that most rimfire manufacturers produce very consistent ammunition as this is not my experience. Whilst some rimfire ammunition manufacturers do produce relatively consistent ammunition they also produce less consistent ammunition. In my experience, generally, the more you pay for the ammunition the better the quality.
Consistency is difficult to quantify as we have no parameters on what consistent is and how it’s measured, so at this stage is open to interpretation.

With regards purchasing a rimfire tuner in the Uk there are, or we’re at least when I last looked, several makes available of which none needed any custom manufacture/fitting. Starik for example. Though if one has an unusual barrel profile they may not fit.

The posters tuner looks smart. One possible advantage is it’s fitting behind the muzzle, prevents the tuner getting carboned which in theory could effect its performance.

If the OP would like to send me one to evaluate I would be happy to oblige. PM via this site.

Whatever one believes if it works for you it works. Happy shooting.

Tuners for rimfire rifles makes life very simple - no more searching for that elusive batch that’s great in your gun - then when it runs out the drama to test different batches to find the one that works again…

I went through all that decided that if I have no control over the ammunition at least I can control the barrel - since then have proven over and over again on the range that tuners work for rimfire rifles

Here is a sample of a CZ that was tuned just yesterday - now shoots .300”@100 yds

I was chatting to a Gunsmith on the subject of Barrel Tuners on .22LR Rifles and he suggested that whilst they do appear to work a Tuned Barrel/Ammo combination would only be good at one distance, i.e. if the Barrel/Ammo combination was tuned on a target a 50 yards it would not necessarily mean that it would be good at 100, 150 or 200 yards. Anyone have any experience of this?

Hi All....I have now had my ECV2 tuner for about 6 months & I have tuned several types of ammo to my rifle in my clubs 25yd range. In my experience the optimum group at 25yds does indeed transfer itself to distance. I have set the tuner to RWS R100, RWS Long Range & SK Match Long Range, the optimum settings vary ammo to ammo of course but maintain the group once adjusted to suit whatever ammunition I'm using at 200yd, 300yds & 400yds. Also....the headspace in my rifle is 0.044" so I have sorted my ammunition to 0.039" rim thickness & then using a bolt shim of 0.004" leaving 0.001" "wiggle room" had a very positive effect too. I believe that by using the tuner & matching the ammunition to my rifles headspace I'm getting the best from my set up.....just my half pennies worth!

So had a play with my new Anschutz today with a newly installed EC V2 Barrel Tuner. I still need to work on my Shooting off a Bench technique but I'm sure I'll get there. Various brands of .22LR tested with some suprising results. All shot a 50m on open air range with a slight breeze from right to left. All Targets are 5 Shot apart from Sheet 1 Target 14 (had a misfire and then the round would not eject so had to hunt for a 'pick' to extract it) and Sheet 2 Target 18 which is 10 shots.

Sheet 1:

image.thumb.jpeg.19c2ffc09dff0745add3599024a025e7.jpeg

Targets 1 to 6 were Norma Tac-22, started with the EC Tuner Flush with the Muzzle and then wound in 1 full turn at a time as I progressed to each Target. I think the flyer on Target 2 was me, after 3 full turns in I shot Target 5, I left the tuner set at 3 turns in and then shot Target 6 (I should have called it a day at that point 🤔).  Velocity SD was 12.3 fps, Ave Velocity was 1061.1 fps.

Targets 7 to 11 were Eley Tenex with Targets 7 and 11 repeats of the same Barrel Tuner setting. Velocity SD was 6.4 fps, Ave Velocity was 1069.8 fps.

Targets 12 to 17 were Eley Club. Velocity SD was 9.7 fps, Ave Velocity was 1051.9 fps.

Target 18 to 21 were Eley Club again but a different Batch. Velocity SD was 13.7 fps, Ave Velocity was 1094.9 fps.

Targets 22 to 25 (and Target 1 on Sheet 2). Velocity SD was 8.0 fps, Ave Velocity was 1110.1 fps.

Sheet 2:

IMG_2849.thumb.jpeg.c79b8eaf1373d62e145b9bbcceb8b3de.jpeg

Target 1 was the last group of Eley Match where I adjusted the Tuner to 2 1/2 Turns in to see if it made any difference to 3 Turns in (Target 22 Sheet 1)

Targets 2 to 6 were Eley BR Outlaw. Velocity SD was 6.7 fps, Ave Velocity was 1098.7 fps.

Targets 7 to 10 were Eley BR Precision. Velocity SD was 6.3 fps, Ave Velocity was 1104.1 fps.

Targets 11 to 14 were RWS R100. Velocity SD was 9.1 fps, Ave Velocity was 1136.6 fps.

Targets 15 to 17 were SK Match. Velocity SD was 6.8 fps, Ave Velocity was 1065.1 fps.

Target 18 was 10 Rounds of Norma Tac with the Tuner reset to the setting for Target 6 on Sheet 1. Velocity SD was 11.3 fps, Ave Velocity was 1074.0 fps

What did I learn? It is actually quite hard to shoot groups from a Bench, I'm not quite as comfortable as I would like to be but I can work on that. I think the Tuner works to some degree, it definitely affects POI and Group Size. I was getting tired by the end of the afternoon as I started shooting Groups at 09:45 with the last Group was shot at 14:31 (there were lots of stops to allow other shooters to reface Targets) so I think the last Norma Tac Group could have been better. The Garmin Xero works a treat.

Next time out I will see if I can fine tune the Norma Tac and SK Match as that is what I currently have the most of, I may even have a go at sorting by rim size.

Question, how do you measure .22LR Head Space?

Hi.....

"Question, how do you measure .22LR Head Space?"

I have a set of .22LR headspace gauges that I bought recently from Barry Nesom....they work really well & Barry is great to deal with...a top fella! 👍
