bradders
Unlike most of you folks here, I don't have a single stage press, I have a Dillon 1050 progressive The main difference between a 1050 and Dillons other fine machines like the 550/650 it its ability to swage primer pockets. Over the last few days I have had some accessories arrive for it, including the most excellent Mr Bulletfeeder I spent yesterday setting this up and while I was waiting for it to arrive, gave the whole machine a much needed service So today after everything was checked, calibrated and test runs done, I shot a rather crappy definition vid with my iPhone and thought I'd share it Earlier I managed to load 50rds in 2 mins A few weeks ago I followed some instructions and took the powder measure apart and polished the hell out of it It's made from zinc and is pretty rough. Mine is quite a few years old and is dull and gritty I chucked it in the lathe, clocked it up and then started with 240 grit emery, finishing with 400 and then a polish with a mop and soap (and Autosol) on a Dremel. All this can be done by hand BTW) While you're at this, break the corners at the bottom. Then give the powder bar and its adjusting slider the same treatment Also, wrap some 400 grit round a piece of flat bar and go to work on the square channel this runs in to get rid of any rough spots. Next polish out the inside of the drop tube (not shown). I use a piece of 5mm rd in and rill with emery wrapped round it. Mine was very rough but is smooth now Finally polish out both the inside and outside of the case actuator Reassemble clean and apply a drop of grease to the white nylon cube on the powder bar and tighten the screw. After tightening apply a bit of nail varnish to the threads to stop the nut undoing. This happened to me a while back and caused all sorts of grief The finished item These are the throw test results with RS52 powder Of 20 charged thrown with the measure set to 24.4gns: 13 measured 24.4 6 measured 24.5 1 measured 24.3 The low one is still only 0.1gn off the mean, but was also the 2nd charge thrown so it could've just been settling in after the adjustments. I think that's pretty impressive overall Dies used in the tool head are a Lee std size and recap (because my Redding competition neck sizer broke, but I will be changing to Carbide dies soon) a Redding small base die and a Redding competition bullet seater. After spending the day with all the new toys, I was asked what bullet runout was like. Remember this is semi mass produced ammo made on a Dillon progressive press, using a Lee std sizing die, followed by a Redding small base die and then seated with a Redding competition bullet seater. Brass is once fired GGG Bullets are 77n SMK's. Runout is less than .001" Not bad at all. I don't have one of those fancy runout thingies, but I do have some V blocks I made as a 16 year old apprentice and plenty of dial gauges, a steel machining block and some mag stands Couldn't be happier :-) ETA: Music by The Doors For some unknown reason I can't seem to embed the last video! andybrock
That's an impressive bit of kit, just out of interest is there any way to check its thrown a charge of powder or do you just trust it has? and after the bullet is seated what's the last die doing? Cheers

Gandy
Brilliant post mark thanks for taking the time. It just goes to show that you can improve factory items when you understand how they work. Bad news is I now want one as I loath reloading. 6.5shooter
I might try polishing these bits on my 550 ?
Murph
You will get a totally mirror finish using a bigger wheel in a lathe with minzerna polishing compound or the likes. I used to a fair bit of polishing for custom motorbikes and the likes. With the proper compound there is very little sanding and prep work. bradders
I'm really surprised some of you call yourselves shooters, and have never even heard of Dillon Precision. Several of us are on friendly terms with the good people of Dillon in Scottsdale AZ, and a few weeks ago they gave us a guided tour of their facility (and you know how much I like a tour) Here's some pics. Dillon also make the 7.62 Minigun that the RAF amongst others use. I have loads more pics of some really really cool stuff, but am not at liberty to post them. Just search Youtube
Ronin
Jealous of the tour…. Ive had my Dillon for years, ace press. Just working the 550 back to being progressive (still looking for all the parts that have been "put carefully away" Theye a good company to deal with direct. johnnyb0_1
Hello Bradders, great post. I run two 650's set up for large and small primers. Never thought of polishing the powder measures. Would this translate to Redding/Lyman type powder measures. They're rotary and have brass chambers which (I think) should be slippy enough but would it benefit from the coned painted bottom of the measure being polished? Experience and thoughts appreciated please. Thanks, J.
