  1. First thanks for all the advice i got out at the end of the day the new light rifle in 223 I'm using is shooting high off sticks. I set it up using my bench then tweaked it using a heavy bag on the bonet of my Land Rover The first fox i used it on was just over 200 yards and it dropped on the spot I then missed one on another piece of ground later that night because I overestimated the range and shot over the top of it. All a bit of a beginners mistake really should know better should've shot off the sticks first on the target before missing two and educating them. Yes Bob I'm using the thermal scope on the new rifle I can honestly say I didn't miss a fox when I had it on the heavy 223 and shot from a vehicle. I'm used to shooting off sticks with my 22 rim fire through to my 308 stalker but I've not seen a change in zero like this before! Although i used the same box of bullets all 53g Hornaday I'm going to run the next box over the Mag Neto it's from the same batch. Also considering using a small bag in the V of the sticks to absorb recoil obviously going to be a learning experience this. I will let you know how I get on as it might help others in the future. Just need the rain to stop.
  2. Well we all like to post when it goes well tonight it certainly didn't I missed two easy shots and two foxes both of which I had been asked to account for by a neighbour who keeps free range chickens and then on my return home after texting the neighbour my poor performance I realise that I've lost my mobile phone ! Just thought I'd share I'm determined to learn by my mistakes.
  3. I bought my ultrasonic cleaner from barber DTS of Sheffield if you look at the models the really big strong industrial ones are the same as one of the badged RCBS I believe but for less money . I'm always intrigued when people say that the cases are to clean on the inside of the necks given that I find very often the most accurate load in a calibre can be with new brass this seems counterintuitive please do comment .
  4. I only met Mark once but he was shooting and it was impressive. i didn't always agree with him but I liked the way he cut through the BS and stuck to his own view on here. RIP Mark
  5. I'm hoping for no rain tonight I've got two one on our farm the other on a neighbouring farm both are very sharp so no closer than I have to and I hope the wind stays as it is and I need cloud cover the moon is so bright at the moment. I'll be using some nice juicy chicken they should smell that a mile away👍
  6. Good to see a dead fox on uk varminting a tastfull picture not out tonight to much rain so reloading for the week of the Europeans instead
  7. Well just settling in after one more tonight came out on the bait site by the Farm house within ten minutes of me baiting it! it was a vixen but one of two as Ide seen another one in the thermal from the house .that was much bigger. Waited but no luck so took a drive on to next doors Farm but I saw two with out getting on them, it's tricky because of the lay out with the banks and fences. intrested that you don't like windy nights Bob I love them get down wind and I can stalk up and close. Just suits our bit of country I suppose.
  8. Just got in after dropping three tonight good advice from Bob I would add go to the super market and get some cheap frozen chicken I pay £6 for a bag let it sit until it stinks and use that as a lure works every time for me no calling just that or a fresh rabbit or pigen but ad dog biskets scattered to keep them in the rite place. i was out with the 223 and thermal scope that scope is a game changer!
  9. Have a look at fild sports Britain extant report this week or though it might be out of date re the general license there is the latest that the RSPB and thier mate Packem with help from the BBC have planned for grouse shooting and Scotland
  10. Yes it is the original barrel it was one of the very last barrels I believe produced by the border barrel company before everything change with them it was a very long wait for the barrel.I ran the barrel in carefully as I do all my barrels and it paid me back by being extremely accurate. The rifle has never been used on a range, I have my own 200y range at home for load development and set up.
  11. RPA interceptor 243 very little use in superb condition round account under 400 has mag feed and RPA supplied moderater very accurate weather shooting 95g 100g or 105g home loads or Norma factory rounds. The price new from RPA S I Believe £3600 new this can be yours for £998 no part exchanges or bids please. i now have a super lightweight dolphin 243 and that's the only reason this perfect gun is for sale can be viewed at Ashford Gun rooms Kent or PM for emails of pictures and my number I will guarantee this gun is as described or your money back.
  12. Ok watch field sports Britain out yesterday on YouTube you don't have to watch the whole program go to the section on General licensing There you wil hear from Ms Spain who makes it clear that section 4 defence allows you to act to protect animals or crops how ever it is a defence NOT a license. Two points re yesterday's program the RSPB want to control all bird shooting! The MP chairing the committee is obviously switched on and it's good to watch the very top people in NE being held to account he's having none of it. Makes you think there's hope yet!
  13. Just switch to one of the very latest designs it's very good
  14. It's quite simple a piece of ground has to be cleared for each calibar (in Kent any way) to give you an idea I have a piece of ground that I own away from the main farm it is just over 4 acres however it has a footpath at the top road at the bottom and both sides neighbours ground and houses. When I first put in for my 22 many many years ago I asked for a FAC spec air rifle specifically for this piece of ground and was given it straight away and congratulated on my awareness of the risk and unsuitability of this piece of ground for a 22. I hope this helps
  15. Well that throws a even worse light on it talk about putting the fox in charge of the hen house. we need a petition to get him sacked he is a public servant
  16. I just watched Fild sports Britain they have some enlightened statements from The countryside alliance as well as Charly the main presenter. Starlings were put on the red list some years ago which meant that as fruit farmers we had to apply for a license it became tighter and more difficult as time went by it was a bit of a lottery on who you are dealing with from NE.
  17. I've just tried to sign the petition but I'm outside of the UK at the moment I don't expect the BBC to listen after all he is Mr OBE now!! I will sign it's when I'm back in the UK next week. I've just looked on the countryside alliance website and it does give more information than BASC I will be contacting my MP who was very good over the 50 cal ban and look for his support. I will also be contacting my local NFU rep and express my hope that they will actually get off their backsides and get behind farming community this is not just the shooting matter.
  18. Just read the BASC response it seems very weak I have not bothered with the country side Alliance since they lost the hunting ban. There needs to be a proper coordinated response to this including the NFU if they're not too busy selling insurance They raised £36,000 from crowdfunding the farming industry combined with supporters of the countryside and our way of life should be able to take this to court and have our own judicial review. The gap between the Walt Disney watching citydwellers and some in the country to those of us who can honestly say we lived for generations in the country is growing wider by the year.
  19. We are leaving them alone this time of year un less we know it's a dog fox for certain or a vixen taking lambs and we then want to know we're the earth is if possible. we also have two shoots one is fully keepered and on that shoot we haven't stopped but we recon to know every earth on the shoot or we're to look for the earths. two points the keepers been told no one can dig an earth now with dogs ? the other point this estate was arginally set up by a rich hunting family and the keeper wasn't allowed to control foxs part of the year as the hunting was more important. Some times things should be left alone!
  20. I have six rifles built by Mick all on or before time and I'm really happy with all of them fantastic cominication and a consistently high standard of service ive had less than happy experiences with two other custom rifle builders.
  21. Your find any competitive FTR 308 should produce a single ragged hole at 100yards with a well produced home load 5 shot group after two sighters what maters is what velocity to wait of bullet to be competing at a thousand yards plus constant velocity I only use the 100 yards as a starting point. see Six Point Five Guys ten shot ladder testing on you tube for load development I've been running proven loads in different callibers and found I've arrived at the same powder wait. Also I've used this method on a new rifle and I'm very pleased with the results. Also a new powder bullet in my stalking 308 again looking promising.
  22. I'm following this with great interest as it's ala well and good reading about a new calibre that's meant to be a big improvement but I feel like I can trust what Dave has too say regarding real world performance walts and all. Thats a stunning rifle
  23. Yep that's what we recon got one permission we're the farmer lets one of his tenants keep chickens so it's a fox magnet the problem is the guy is out with his torch and his dogs or gun he gets a few but misses a few they get really jumpy on that bit it's were I shot the dog fox last night. Pleanty get missed with night vision as well I'm not knocking lamping truth too tell I miss it.
