JDT
I’m in desperate need of a decent gun vice for both ease of maintenance and scope mounting. Naturally, my first port of call was just to google what the best ones were so I could pick one that suited my requirements / budget. After trawling several articles and big U.K. online retailers (Optics Warehouse and Sportsman Gun Centre for example) I was shocked to find that the only real option seemed to be the Tipton ‘Best Gun Vice’ or ‘Ultra Gun Vice’. Both of these had a very plasticky look about them and quite frankly I’m just shocked at the lack of options or different manufacturers for something like this that most shooters must surely need. Does anybody know of any different options? Even from a small British firm? What are other people’s opinions on this apparent near-monopoly of this particular piece of equipment? On the other hand, if options are indeed very limited, are there any resounding endorsements for either of the Tipton models?

Scotch_egg
After years of completing all my maintenance just using the bipod in the rifle I recently picked up a Tipton ultra gun vise. I have no experience of the others available but what I will say is they are heavy and hold the rifle firmly place. What I wouldn’t want is something that is lightweight. It’s good because I can move it. https://www.opticswarehouse.co.uk/tipton-ultra-gun-vise However what I would say is if you have an existing vise something like this for clamping the barrel would be a cost effective way of clamping the rifle. Don’t be scared of clamping a barrel as most gunsmiths do it. https://www.etsy.com/uk/listing/1250615920/barrel-vise-adapter?gpla=1&gao=1&&utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=shopping_uk_en_gb_a-craft_supplies_and_tools-tools_and_equipment-tools-fastening_and_attaching-clamps_and_vises&utm_custom1=_k_CjwKCAjwv8qkBhAnEiwAkY-ahhhTJhFnbw6OGqY11VjUekwHby4EPwfdDccLn-y6dL37EerW3DtpJxoCCQEQAvD_BwE_k_&utm_content=go_12576471064_122334790449_507597625827_pla-296992081170_m__1250615920engb_102858184&utm_custom2=12576471064&gbraid=0AAAAADutTMfIHJ-aUHshTB5g8Cyh6UKdp&gclid=CjwKCAjwv8qkBhAnEiwAkY-ahhhTJhFnbw6OGqY11VjUekwHby4EPwfdDccLn-y6dL37EerW3DtpJxoCCQEQAvD_BwE

Thanks for that scotch egg . Bog standard record 3 or 4” vice and some custom soft jaws looks like a very good solution. cheers
Richiew
Fancy one of these with soft jaws https://www.primetools.co.uk/brand/irwin-record/?product-category=bench-vices
Richiew
Machine mart do one that’s a fair bit lighter at 9 kg 100 mm jaw size which would be mor appropriate.
Aportch
Tipton best gun vice may look plastic but it is solid and a great tool
Shuggy
I have had a Tipton Gun Vise for years and they are great. However, chassis style stocks such as my AX308 do not fit well. I have recently bought a ‘pattern makers vice’ to replace the Tipton. These have the advantage of soft jaws, the ability to grip ‘tapers, round or odd shapes’ and the ability to swivel to any orientation. Plus the price is only £148, which I think is very reasonable. https://www.axminstertools.com/axminster-trade-vices-pattern-makers-vice-107038?queryID=43682989aa623abd93274522cd48abbd
