Noise cancelling plugs

Recommended Posts

So looking to replace my cheap passive headset with some fancy noise cancelling plugs or headset.
Which ones would you recommend? or avoid?

Are the expensive ones worth the difference in price?

Comments appreciated :-)

I recently got a set of these:

I'm impressed with the sound cut off both for pistol and rifle shooting. Cost me just on NZ$125 so around 52 UK pounds

Down side is weight but still acceptable for all day wearing.

My ancient Peltors recently died after over 10 years' service.

After reading lots of reviews, and trying a pair of MSA Sordins, I bought the Peltor ProTac II:

Nothing else has the same quality combined with an excellent Noise Reduction Rating of 32dB. I want to protect what's left of my hearing, and I trust Peltor to do just that.

Chris,

I'd avoid the Peltor Tactical 6, one of the units packed up after about a year and they really eat batteries with no auto shut off you've really got to check you've switched them off and they remain off when folded up. I still use mine simply because I can't be bothered to buy something better.

Having a bit of a paranoia about protecting my dismal hearing under all (shooting conditions) I've got the MSA Sordin, a pair of Peltor ComTac and the in-ear CENS units with the highest spec. I would recommend the CENS for hunting and light range use, and both the Peltor and MSA for range use. Not being able to wear a hat (unless it's a beanie or a cap) with the earmuffs is a disadvantage (when hunting in sunny conditions). I've seen in some of the PathFilms the use of earmuffs with a neck band, but I hcpve not tried these or seen them in the UK.

Best of luck with your choice,

Finman

I have a pair of MSA Sordins with the neck band instead of the "over the top of the head" band. They still have (and need) a thin fabric strap which goes over the top to support them, so although you can wear them with any kind of hat, the fit is not perfect. If I had to replace them, I think I would get ordinary over the top headbands, but I would get MSAs again.

I agree with Finman - I also have a set of CENS in-ear units, which I wear for nearly everything now, although they are probably a bit marginal for very noisy range use, but I find them more than adequate on most of our clubs range days, with a good number of moderated rifles and rather few with muzzle brakes.

I also have a pair of top end Pro-ears over the head, and think the sound quality from those is excellent (better than the MSA units), but battery life is not so good, they use specialist lithium batteries, and I did have some problems with durability.

Peltor ComTac. Plenty of pairs kicking around on the Bay- they are current Issue to range teams in the Forces.

Hence most of the pairs that have been on eBay appear to have NSN stickers on the box....
