AI AX Rebarrel

Recommended Posts

When I bought my AI AX at the beginning of the year I the plan was always to make it into a switch barrel gun; it came with a fluted 308 barrel that shoots pretty well.

I specced a duplicate profile Archer barrel from Border in .264" (1.85" twist)

It arrived a couple of weeks ago.

Been pretty busy with prep for the States and other work and so I finally sorted out the barrel last week.

Chambered in 6.5x47 (no turn reamer) and throated for 123g Scenars.

The reamer has cut a few barrels, every one a shooter.

I timed the barrel up to the flutes matched at 12 oclock and made a M18x1 mm thread, without cap because it will have a brake or moderator attached most of the time, I didnt think it necessary to make an invisible cap.

Length is 21" from action face.

Chamber is cut to BR tolerances (as usual)

I hadnt had the opportunity to go out and do any load testing, but had a BDS range session local to me today, so I threw a few new cases through my dies this morning and toppled 38g of Varget over a CCI BR primer with a 123 Scenar seated .010" off the lands.

Though id boresighted it, I thought Id Zero it before trying out the DSC1 style test..

Target as shot (at 100 yds in stiff breeze

3 shots (top right) on paper, not really trying.

4th shot - after ajusting scope

Group above centre of cross - 5 shots - .230" happy.......

Thought id shoot the DSC style test next, some of it was shot off table top "bench",

Course of fire was actually -

3 shots 150 yd Fallow target seated from bench

3 shots 100 yd Roe target seated from bench

3 shots 40 yd Muntjac target (Standing with sticks)

2 shots 40 yd (timed reduced size Roe target with blank reversed score area) - standing

I wont bore you with the standing targets, however

Seated Fallow insert - I pulled a shot or the breeze picked up....causing the wayward one

Seated Roe insert (100 yds)

All were in front of witness's

6.5 x 47 rocks - so do "doctored" AX's,,,,,

I'll post some pics of the rifle in a bit.

Looks good. Can you tell me what profile the barrel is please as im wondering how much barrel life is left on my AW 6.5x47 barrel and fancy something slightly thicker than the Varmint profile one on it?

Thanks

Paddy, .97 at the muzzle, 1.16" at the shank.

Fluted from 3.5" from shank to 2" from muzzle.

Atb Matt

Heavy enough for me to carry all day (in 308 form) on the hinds last season and have no problem extracting.....

I'll weigh it for you

I didnt have these targets at home with me yesterday as I had to leave the shoot before it finished.

They were left for judging as two of us had scored prtetty well on the "Boar".

This was 4 shots into a lifesize boar target with no discernable scoring area on the insert (150 yds)

Second half of the test was two shots at the Zero target again at 150 yds.

I got the targets back today.

Boar insert

.360" group......

Zero Target

Pleased to say I got highest score on both Boar and DSC style tests...

Nice fuzzy feeling that this was achieved without precise aiming marks and a 16 power PM11..
