  1. I first met Mark over twenty years ago at the birth of what was to become CSR, we had shot with smellies before in LERA matches and here we were about to shoot alongside the army with the aid of Pete Bloom who had made it possible. Mark had a converted AR15 while a lot of us had No.4's, we all thought using an AR15 was a bit gamey at the time...or was it envy? One of Mark's greater achievements which appears to be overlooked in the wake of his death was overcoming the glaucoma in his shooting eye. He simply started using the other eye and shoulder by building a left handed AR and recorded some very commendable scores with it in the process. Yes he could be infuriating to some but his generosity knew no bounds, I turned up for a CSR shoot a couple of years ago and he just gave me 150 rounds of RG to shoot the match with. He also once accused me of invading his country; (he was a native of Belfast) after a few short words we agreed to our own style of Good Friday agreement which I have to say appears to have lasted better than the one Tony Blair put his name to!
  2. Anybody on here using this? To be honest I didn't know the 170gr existed until yesterday and have been pleased with the 167gr Lapua in the past. That was until I noticed the variables in weight with the 167gr so switched back to the 168gr SMK which did me well this summer. My thoughts are that it should perform better at 900 & 1000?
  3. Mattnall & SMLE are on the money, I've tried various freeze dried meals and they all taste like shite. Way back in the 1960's I can remember pork & beef bars in artic ration packs which weren't too bad but haven't seem them in years.
  4. 41.8 grs of N140 (under a174gr SMK) is supposed to replicate the MV of the original MkVII round. Having said that I had a No.4 built for me by Fultons for SR"b" a couple of years ago and have been feeding it 41.5gr of N140 but plan to drop it down to 41grs and neck size only. The reason for this is two friends I regularly shoot with have experimented a lot recently with neck resizing and both of them have found their groups have shrunk doing this and both of then use 41gr N140 and a 174gr SMK.
  5. It doesn't actually say how big your vegetable patch has to be.....hmmm 😉
  6. Thanks, I shall keep an eye the BASC website for further details.
  7. I've applied for the licence but am struggling to understand where wood pigeons come into the equation. Can I still shoot them, or have they got to be on crops?
  8. I'm using Eley Contact in my BAR15-22 as well as Eley Force, haven't had it that long but suspect the Eley Force may have the edge on accuracy. Only using the sub sonic Contact because of a noise issue at my local .22 club.
  9. Thanks Mark, I hadn't seen that obituary of Gillie before. He'll probably be remembered by many of us as for having the most untidy gun shop in the UK! Trading an air pistol with him once for some Yugoslavian MkVIII .303 ammunition I found a convenient wooden box to sit on, which I assumed has been put on the customer side of the counter for that very purpose. On concluding the deal I asked Gilly where the ammunition was, your sat on it he replied! The box complete with ammunition inside sat there for many months until he had sold the lot.
  10. Gilly Howe once told me he walked from Norfolk to Portsmouth to join the RM's and slept in hedges and barns on his way to Eastney Barracks. No known by many was his wife's first occupation, she was a Luftwaffe photographer! During an aerial reconnaissance mission in ww2 the pilot suggested they land in Sweden and be interned rather than fight on, the whole crew unanimously agreed. And it has to said, he looks like he's enjoying himself in the picture!
  11. On a factory visit to Swarovski about 17 years ago we found some goodies upon arrival on our hotel beds. The gem was a small Swiss army knife incorporating scissors, tweezers and a small blade. I reckon I used the scissors far more than I ever used the blade!
  12. That probably explains why I haven't seen one before!
  13. Just found this, obviously not for air travel but interesting all the same. http://hiconsumption.com/2017/01/sog-sync-ii-belt-buckle-multi-tool/
  14. I was lucky enough to spot an L96A1 being shot at Bisley on Wednesday; it was an ex Bedfordshire police one with the swirly type muzzle brake. It was also sporting an L17A1 for those in the know!
  15. From an artillery point of veiw 6400Mils is easily devisble for all 8 points of a compass. Anybody else on here old enough to remember the Eastings Northings book you started a fire mission with in the command post?
  16. How ironic, so was I! I'm working all this week so cannot make the return trip with all the lessons I have learned so far.
  17. Just ordered one! Just need to play with the bags now, I do have some lead shot...............I wonder?
  18. This is the first year I have been able to enter with a suitable rifle (AE Mk.III) and whilst I enjoyed it immensely there were a number of things I was aware of that were not quite right. Also, we wont be discussing my scores here! Saturday 13th July is being claimed as the hottest day of the year so far, and this was the day I entered the McQueens. The cheek piece on the AE has never let me down, although on Saturday my face was so wet with sweat a "cheek weld" was never going to happen. So, are the grippy ones sold by Victor Company worth the money? You would have thought our friends across the pond would know about hot weather. Has anybody on here purchased one, and what are your thoughts on it please? It was on my second attempt that I realised the bipod needed to come up higher so there is more room for the rear bag, but what about the rear bag? I have three of them, two are the sausage type (issue?) from Sporting Services which I found difficult to slide my hand across while holding the rear monopod, which I use to control my PoA. The other bag has a Nylon feel to it which seems the best compromise but is either a little to small or requires a bit more filling. Your thoughts on fillings would be helpful. Saturday saw the worst (or best) mirage I think there is to see at Bisley. I was using my Vortex 4-16X50 PST, I felt it was underpowered for the job, although a mucker who has won the McQueens says he finds 12x more than adequate! There is no denying that I would like S&B 5-25X50, albeit I think 16X should do the trick although the reticule in the Vortex, is in my opinion too thick for the McQueens. Your thoughts and suggestions would be most valuable, the second best part of the day was playing with Davy's dog behind the Shooting Shed Tent whilst chatting to Bradders!
