What Shooting Magazines

ANDY T

Recommended Posts

The Varmint Hunter, comes with subscription to the VHA., recommended - loads of very good content, hours of reading. Used to subscribe, for quite a few years, to Shooting Times (the USA one, no relation) but after we lost handguns it became less cost effective, and too frustrating to read all that handgun stuff... The only Brit shooting mag I ever thought worth reading was Handgunner - a genuinely excellent publication, and Jan Stevenson certainly wrote the most literate, interesting editorials I've ever known in a shooting title. RIP.... I wrote quite a lot for shooting mags in the '90s (The Field, Sporting Gun, sometimes the UK Shooting Times) but only read those because I got free copies. I know of no Brit shooting mag that is remotely worth paying for, mostly shotgun/game/"stalking" stuff and practically no varminting or ballistics. There are lots of good shooting mags published in France and Germany - wish I could read those languages better...

Mostly agree with Tony as most mags are just another months repeat of 'Here is the latest Roe deer that I stalked etc'...IE too much anecdote and not enough educational / technical content.

Sporting rifle is the exception in my view as it contains some good stuff on load development and equipment tests....although it is a little guilty of 'yet more hunting stories'.

Best of all is Target shooter online ... just wish I had a larger monitor for reading it!

Sporting Rifle but it's getting a bit "airgun world" with "stories" of some bloke shooting a Jackdaw or a couple of feral pigeons or a rat that has eluded him for months.....why, who cares? That said there are some good articles in it.

I did go through a stint of buying sporting rifle but after about 6 months got bored of its content. One bit that i personally dont like and its probably necessary that they do it to make money with sponsors is when they say about their hunt but they did it with blaser this and swarovski that.. I do enjoy reading the calibre hunter bit and the target bit which has some good info in there.. the rest is very similar to so many other mags out there..

What would be good is to have a running 'diary' of someone trying to achieve something ie a 1000yd rabbit, going through the process from calibre selection to rifle build to load development etc, those things we all go through and talking about the trial and tribulations and options to be made..

SO to answer the OP: I dont subscribe to any.. im yet to find one which 'ticks the boxes'..

Had subscriptions to 'Shooting Sports' and 'Sporting Rifle' for a few years. Gave up after reading some company's promotional material masquaraded as a journalistic piece. Had enough of 'easily prints 3/4inch with factory ammo out of the box', and 'a good buy for the money' as the concluding remarks. I now subscribe only to 'Precision Shooting' and 'Varmint Hunter'. I was subscribing to the excellent 'Small Caliber News' till its demise and had a moment of epiphany when I decided to take them up on their offer and buy all their back issues.

I wish some editor reads this thread and tries to do something about the pitiful state of the UK publications. Indeed, it is fun to read about stalking an elusive buck (or rat for that matter), but build in some info about gun, preparation, ballistics...In most cases we are lucky to find out what calibre they were using! I don't object in reading about the brands they use in their adventures, at the end of the day, this is our resource in getting an opinion about a piece of kit that we may be interested in. But make it objective and don't always placate the manufacturer/importer so that you can pocket the freebie.

Finman, ain't gonna happen. The USA is far bigger than this country and, more important, a significantly bigger proportion of its people go shooting/hunting - or fishing, come to that. Even individual states can support pretty good magazines, such as Florida Sportsman, good fishing mag. These have really big circulations, which is why I can subscribe to The Varmint Hunter, Field & Stream, or Shooting Times (the Illinois one), or in the past SaltWater Sportsman, and get a top class magazine for less than similar would cost me in a UK High Street newsagent. I haven't the figures to hand but I'd bet the same holds true for France and Germany, each of them bigger countries with more land, less urbanised, less restrictive firearms regulation too. Sure, a lot of Brits own shotguns, but how many FAC holders are there? Really not many - and the proportion of those interested in precision rifles, handloading, varmint hunting and so on, is very small. We're an insignificant minority for whom creating a high quality publication is not economic.

The magazine scene is so biased its untrue.

I know several writers as personal friends which is always gonna come under fire. I always stipulate to people who review something of mine, to tell the truth, warts and all.

One of these guys wanted to review a Valkyrie rifle for one of the mainstreams, and was told there would be no publication unless i took out advertising with them.

You can guess the Barnsley reply.......

This was one of the news stand mags.

By far the best is the excellent targetshooter. Its written by shooters for shooters, and the guys tell the truth.

Speak to the gun pimp on here , hes doing a bloody great job under increasing pressure from all directions. His mag will only get better, as support for it grows and the knockers out there piss off to america

Spud I second that. They are doing a great job and are easy to speak to and welcome input from the "man on the street" which is exactly how it should be as it avoids all the journalistic bullshit that others have mentioned. Sometimes a bit technical but then that only provides people with the knowledge they will need in the future!

The more technical the better for me Mike , i am now starting think about reducing the torque applied to my barrels when you fire the high weighted bullets at fast speeds.

As Laurie will confirm on here.

Yep.

Just spotted your from Macclesfield Andy. Ever see the Macc lads [ the band ] :D

You don't have to be from oop north to know about the macc lads, apart from the insane words (eg sweaty betty), the music was shite though

In my memory "you don't sweat much for a fat lass" was their ultimate quotable line when drunk and not bothered about winning the comp.

Back on the subject of publications...I was in N Zealand for a month in March and, walking into a newsagents, this was what I saw

DSC00845.jpg

now, if a country of 5-6 million people can have that many shooting/hunting publications (and, OK, I don't know whether they are worth anything in terms of quality), why can't we have something similar in the UK?

best wishes,

Finman

Mark, I've no idea who this is or what magazine you refer to - or whether you're being deliberately offensive to some people possibly including myself. I hope not. If there's a good Brit shooting magazine I'd be happy to hear about it...
