I have a $50 ebay special, I got my rifle about a third of the way through the summer comp and after having used a club gun whose weigth of pull would tax an elephant i'm in no danger of winning. I hear what you say about the 6.5, but im getting conflicting information.. I can get .233 rounds at 50p/bang but im told 6.5CM are well north of £1.. now I live with in 40mins of Bisley so i can shoot every weekend, so the saving could soon mount up (Im also thinking of retiring soon so a lot more shooting days maybe soon)

So I have a .22lr that use for benchrest up to 100M and I've put in for a variation to get a .223 for 200y to 600y ish (maybe the odd comp) and a 6.5 Creedmore for 600y up to 1200y ( just for fun ATM) Now my question is I have apx £1K to spend on Optics, how any scopes? Do i just get one for say £800 and a set of qr mounts, with rails on each, or one much cheaper one for each rifle. or a combination.. IYSWIM.

Like I say decided to play it safe and leave it at home in the safe.

Im now thinking this has the potential to go horribly wrong for me, so maybe best leave the guns at home and borrow/hire one on arrival. Thanks for the advice. One serious question though which part of a rifle is the rifle? IYSWIM. On the 10/22 you can remove the whole trigger unit and bolt charging handle and stock in a few seconds , is what's left still a rifle. I'm assuming the receiver is the important bit as it has the serial number . cheers Martin

Thanks guy's I now think I've come up with a better plan. If I disassemble the gun, I'm pretty sure I can leave each part in separate lockers at work. And of course can transport in in my gym bag. I'll measure up on monday.

will your works let you take it in to your work place ? I doubt it, its very open plan, thousands of people work there, and im often away from my desk. the car park is on a public road, but its a dead end with no through foot fall traffic. I also reckon as well as locking it out of sight I can get a bike D lock through the trigger guard to the structure of the car.

Guys, I'd like to take a rifle to work as Im shooting on tuesday evening. Its just with a 22.lr so i can either take my CZ bolt or my 10/22 issue is i will have to leave it locked in the car. At least with the CZ i can take the bolt with me, but the 10/22 is more fun in gallery shooting. ( 25 rounds in a few sec's is very cathartic) What would you do?

Thanks for all this guys, i bit of information i didn't mention is I've had a couple of serious neck injuries. Once playing rugby, once motor racing, so I'm conscious of recoil. Now I can and do happily shoot 200+ 24g clay cartridges in couple of hours in competitions with absolutely no problems, but i have heard stories of one shot with a rifle causing months of pain and grief. I have to say after a day's contemplation I am thinking a 6.5 creedmoor is the way to go, "Buy once Cry once" i believe is the expression. from what i understand it's pretty low recoil, good to 1000 yards, and using Man maths, ammo isn't that much more expensive than .233 over a year. If i could ask a supplementary questions how much ammo is it usual to shoot in a session? I guess I average between 50-100 .22lr so I assume full bore is less.

Hi all I'm now in a position to get my first big boys target rifle, however i also want to be a bit realistic in what in going to be able to achieve so I don't want to spend loads of money of gear I'll never be able to get the best out of ( it's taken me 40 years to be a reasonably competent clay shooter) so a bit of advice on calibre, rifle and scope would be appreciated. Salient details are.. I shoot .22lr benchrest and enjoy it, but i'm really not that competitive. I live about 40 mins from Bisley.. and I'll be retiring soon so lots of shooting time available. when i was younger i invested in beer and sports cars rather than my pension fund, (but boy did i have a good time) so cost is a consideration I don't have the patience or manual dexterity to reload, ( it would end badly!) If i was in the USA Id be happy shooting steel targets all day. current thinking is a Savage or a Ruger precision in .233 give's me the option of F/TR and cheapish Ammo.

This with .22LR at 25m and 50m. The front rest can only offer vertical support, no lateral. At my club we all have to use the MTM? red plastic stepped prism/delta shaped things.

Guys, I shoot in a couple of benchrest comp's that allow a front rest only. My problem is I dont know what the best position for my non trigger hand. Make a fist and rest the stock on that, or place my free hand on my other arm, and rest the stock on my forearm is what Ive tried so far, but neither seem ideal. any suggestions?

Shot 50 through it today with no scope and straight out of the box and so far so good. Will need to lighten the trigger though.

So just to wrap this thread up. I've managed to do a straight swap for a new 457 MTR with one of my game shooting SBS shotguns that was getting seldom use.

I guess the question really is and what im struggling with, is it better, if you have £700 to spend do you go for a 64 for less than £200 and spend the rest on a scope & mount which hopefully will be good enough to last for a while but knowing you'll have to change the gun, or go for a 50/50 split and probably end up compromising on both?.

OK so I posted last a couple of things have happened. Good news, after 6 months my FAC visit has taken place so hopefully it will arrive shortly. Bad news.. HMRC and i had a difference of opinion and guess how that ended! I now have a budget of 3 rather than 4 figures for a entire .22lr benchrest outfit.. Today on guntrader used Match 54 or Match 64 action Anschutz run from £150 (64) to £750 for a 54 and a Nikko sterling scope. Im leaning towards getting the 64 for £150 and adding a £500-£700 scope with the view to upgrade the rifle later. Am i on the right track?

Just to resurrect an old thread. I applied for my FAC in mid December, here we are in April and I still haven't heard anything. I have phoned my local licensing authority (Surrey) and they confirmed I'm in the queue. Apparently they have now merged with Sussex and are a bit snowed under!

Can anyone recommend ( or has for sale ) a target scope with parallax adjustment for targets anywhere between 20m and 100m. Not looking to spend a fortune as I'm just getting started in the sport. It will be primarily for bench rest, but maybe a bit of LWS and 3 position as well.

Surrey postal comp rules i believe. Anyway if I wrong its an excuse for another rifle 😀

So after checking county and club rules I can only use a single shot ( or only have one round in a magazine) for benchrest, but there is no weight limit, so a used Anshutz match 54 seems to fit the bill, i've seen them for less than £500 locally. Has anyone any thoughts?
