  1. Dave-T and Catch-22; in my experience so far you won't be disappointed. the club seems to be very friendly and well run - just like ODRC in the glory days of John M!
  2. I had a few Land Rover products many, many years ago but I'm too old to push cars now 😂 so no, not guilty 🤣 Assuming you're still with MDRC, hopefully I'll see you on the shooting point / butts at some point I have an elderly Merc ML
  3. I have talked to those who actually know what happened, with no axe to grind, and the reality is that JM was not the greatest with paper work, which I can relate to, but the reality was that no money nor ammo had gone missing, despite the accusations. Now his accusers have buggered the club, it remains to seen what will happen to the club funds and assets if someone with time and expertise doesn't rescue the club from the ashes it seems to be burning in. I so hope someone does rescue the club though because with John at the helm it was a great club.
  4. Very nice for those living in the far north of England or Scotland, but sadly far to far away for the vast majority of Offa's Dyke members. I personally could not afford the diesel to get to Scotland from Somerset for a day's shooting, gorgeous though it looks. Fortunately, I have joined Monmouth and District Rifle Club who are super friendly and welcoming and are booking military ranges. They are the saviour for disenfranchised ODRC members.
  5. I understand that it wasn't only Wheeler at fault, though I don't know who the others were, but they did threaten to involve the police. I was given the information by a very reliable source. Wheeler told anyone who was willing to listen that John was a demon. Wheeler was most unpleasant to both myself and a number of my friends. My only first hand gripes are from his rudeness and handing out spurious accusations. Anyone who is a member will have received his emails .... and will know that he generally denied receiving communications.
  6. As many on here are, I am a member of ODRC. I am a pretty good judge of character as is essential when you are long term self employed. When i first met John I saw him as a thoroughly good egg and a gentleman to boot. When I was informed by Mr Wheeler and his cohorts that Johns was robbing the club blind I found this hard to believe and I have had it confirmed by someone in the know that, whilst bean counting wasn't his strong point, he was massively honest and had no reason to rob a club. Isn't it strange that once he was ousted that we no longer had any regular shoots. Hmm. The club didn't keep up the MOD license they were required to, but they blamed that on John even though it happened after he left and had never lapsed while he was at the helm. hmm. Moving on it now seems that the club is now persona non-gratis not only with the NRA but also various parts of the MOD and Landmark. Great According to the website the club now has no secretary nor membership secretary and communication seems to be at an all time low. Great Unfortunately, being self employed, I really don't have the time to volunteer, nor if I'm honest the knowledge or skills required to take on the job(s). I wonder if another club with the skills and/or infrastructure could take it under their wing? Or is there someone out there who is retired who could bring it back from the ashes? Could anyone beg John to come back and save what was a wonderful club? No one would blame him for telling the club to PO or even FO, but perhaps if all the AHs could be extricated then perhaps it could become the great club it once was? I personally have joined Monmouth and District Rifle Club which seems on the face of it to be a very well run and friendly club and will compliment the other clubs I am a member of, but I would be very sad to see ODRC die. I've met some lovely people at ODRC shoots. Am I alone?
  7. Was FCSA not originally part of ODRC or visa versa? As ODRC seems to be persona non gratis currently in more than one direction, I wonder if there would be any mileage in FCSA putting on some of the shoots formally hosted by ODRC? Eg Warminster G, Rogiet Moore, Sennybridge J3A, G etc etc I have met enough FCSA members on ODRC shoots to know I would join in a heartbeat were the opportunity to shoot with a friendly club offered!
  8. I did have a 'login' as an ODRC member to their website as the two clubs allowed members of each to visit either. I had looked before the Kung Flu pandemic, when ODRC was in some previous bad place, which of course was blamed on John, though I very much doubt it was his fault, but they sadly had no shoots anywhere near me. I am based in Somerset just south of Bristol. I can't seem to long in anymore - have the ODRC upset the FCSA?
  9. As long term self employed, I have had to learn as a matter of survival, to be able to judge people quickly and accurately as mistakes can be very costly. The first time I met John I had him down as a thoroughly good egg and frequent further encounters did nothing to alter my initial high opinion. I cannot necessarily say the same for his detractors.
  10. MY STR came with a brake with side ports. When I bought my Sabatti .300 Win mag it didn’t come with s as brake and I was lent a pepper pot brake but it was fairly ineffectual. I copied the one on my STR in a bit of 316 stainless from a narrow boat prop shaft I was given, except that I made the hole much closer in size to the actual projectile which works really well and my .300WM has noticeably less recoil than the STR.
  11. As a member of this club, I was very disappointed to receive an email from the “management” informing me as a member that a ‘bad person’ who was a member of ODRC had grassed the club up to the NRA to do with some COVID rule misdemeanour. Don’t get me wrong we do need to take great care not to allow this dreadful virus to to proliferate, but the email suggested that this was vindictive. Due to health reasons (nowt to do with Kung Flu) I have yet to have the opportunity to go to a long range shooting since lockdown but had been given the green light from June onwards by those in white coats. Imagine how over joyed I was to be told that the only club I’m a member of that shoots long range is now not able to function. Was anyone on here at Kingsbury on the fateful day? Why has the lives of all the members of this club been blighted, when the obvious solution would be to re-educate those running the club? I miss John who previously ran ODRC and whilst I understand his er, book keeping left a bit to be desired, but it was a brilliant club at which I really enjoyed shooting regularly. The chap who seems to be in charge now, doesn’t seem to like me or my circle of friends and makes little effort to disguise his feelings. To be fair I have always got on well with all the members and have tried not to piss this chap off, but it doesn’t seem to be the happy club it once was.
  12. When I first started shooting, as a direct response to the moaning on this forum about muzzle brakes, I paid for a variation on my ticket for my .308 etc. for mods. I then invested in a mod for my .308, all because I didn’t want the be the pariah it was suggested I would be on here should I use my Sabatti STR with the factory fitted brake. I then took it to a range and tried it out. In a very short space of time, despite the fat barrel, it got very hot and the moire effect on the sight made shooting impossible. I asked all my fellow shooters if they objected to my using my brake a no one minded in the slightest. I have not experienced any of the anti-muzzle brake rhetoric anywhere other than on here in the real world of shooting. In my home club some object to them 8n the 50metre tunnel, but then other than getting zero there’s no reason to use anything over .22LR at 50m IMHO. I have yet to visit Bisley, but have been told that one needs to fess up to a brake when booking. i have osteoporosis and short of giving up long range shooting, I do not see that there is a real world alternative. Pretty much everyone I shoot with uses a brake and on the odd occasions my lane buddy doesn’t, I can’t say the experience has been improved mesmerically. Shooting outdoors, my experience has been that the myriad disadvantages of using a mod out way any positives.
  13. I initially used RS52 with my .223, but then realised that RS powders recommend RS40, a faster burning powder, which I now use with 69gr TMKs. I've found they work very well at 600 metres.
  14. I rate RS powders very highly and use them for all my rifles. The TMKs were very sensitive to load. I use RS70 in my .300WinMag ; it works very well.
  15. You will find loading your own will give you a lot more control and you can tune the ammo to your gun. I, personally could not afford to shoot if I didn't roll my own - tailor mades are sooo expensive. You really need to reload to get the best accuracy out of you gun. It's a bit like photography without the dark room or more laterally Photoshop 😀
  16. I can't remember the exact process, but it was very easy. There very little hold them together
  17. I've had a Sabatti Tactical MRR chambered in .300Win Mag for a while now and rate it very highly. The first thing i did was take the stock off, drill two M6 holes in it and fit a short picatinny rail with stainless machine screws and nyloc nuts. I wouldn't want to use wood / self tap type screws. I use it with a Tier One FTR BiPod which is great. I am however getting it all fitted in a laminated Form Rifle stock cos I don't like plastic, even though it works well. The laminated stock should be heavier and stiffer. Ironically having the stock fitted will set me back more than the rifle did, but it will look well sexy ☺️
  18. Dear o dear you guys don't have great taste in beer 🙄 Now if Butcombe brewery built shooting ranges ..... Sounds like a great place; sadly it's a good three hundred miles form me - five hours in the car assuming there isn't the usual run of road works 😥 When my back is better, I'll have to find somewhere to stay up there for a couple of nights.
  19. My .223 is VERY sensitive to load. (CZ527 in Formrifle stock). Well worth spending time developing what your gun likes, though it sounds as though you have.
  20. I have a CZ527 in a formrifle stock. Once run in, I started using 69gr TMKs but found them very sensitive to load. After some development I settled on 22gr RS40 which has been producing very acceptable groups at 600metres. (Rogiet Moor before all the piss arsing about with Landmarc). I was unsure of how it would be at 600, but the reality is that it was superb. Last time I fired it was at G range (Sennybridge) where is was too accurate and was therefore discarded in favour of my No4 with iron sights that could never be described as too accurate 😂 The loads were in federal cases with Sellier and Belliot primers which produced an MV of 2734fps. I’m so looking forward to some long range (1000+) - my Sabatti .300 win mag is currently at HPS having a Formrifle stock fitted. There seems no light on the horizon with ODRC 😢
  21. I have had a tier one FTR and used it for non-competitive 600 - 1000metres from .223 to .300 Win Mag with good result for a number of years. Not looking to change 😃
  22. I was one who did butts duty. I was going to shoot in the second detail but the RCO was so rude to my friend Clinton over the radio at the gate that we decided that enough was enough. Working the targets was miserable as the rain poured down our upturned sleeves and necks. I could have endured the rain alone but the constant sniping from the RCO made it unbearable and to be honest makes me question my membership of the club. I appreciate he gave up his free time to run the shoot, but if he can't be polite then he may as well have stayed at home.
  23. I have a couple of Sabatti rifles with Multi Radial Rifling which seem reasonably accurate, even in my hands and are a piece of cake to clean. The first, an STR chambered in .308 was bought on the longevity of barrels and after parting with a huge bag of change I wasn't looking for something that need re-barrelling on a regular basis. My second is the heavier barrel MRR rifle chambered in .300 Win Mag with a plastic stock which I would dearly love to change for something like a Formrifle, GRS or similar laminated stock. To be fair it shoots really well and is a genuine pleasure to use, but from an aesthetic perspective it isn't pretty. Using my home machined muzzle brake recoil is almost non existent. I also have a CZ chambered in.223 which has a formrifle stock and looks adorable in my opinion. It also shoots accurately, allowing for my imperfections. It is far more fussy about load development than the Sabattis. BUT when it comes to cleaning, it is a right royal pain in the rear and takes dozens and dozens of patches before they come out really clean. I have for a while I have been toying with the idea of a 6.5mm Creedmoor and/or .338 lapua. I am less than enthusiastic about conventional rifling due to wear, long term accuracy and cleaning, but like the idea of building a custom rifle myself, but I don't believe that Sabatti sell their barrels as blanks. Are there many manufacturers selling polygonal rifled barrels? What do you guys think?
  24. Like me, you probably joined when John was at the helm. I have a feeling that a there has been a tightening up of rules.
