Hi, I have long been a fan of copper plated bullets for gallery rifle loads, and have used the offerings from H&N and LOS in the past. Unfortunately these makes are hard to come by these days, and I have just purchased a quantity of 44Mag calibre 240gr RNFP plated bullets from RG (a Spanish firm I believe) I observe that the Flat portion of the bullet is the same diameter as a large pistol primer as per the attached photo Being of a nervous disposition, I wonder if these are safe to shoot in a tubular magazine such as is normally found on a Gallery(Lever action) rifle?? M worrying in wet Monmouthshire

Hi, trying to develop a load for a new aquisition (Winchester 1901 lever action 10G shotgun) that will not break my already arthritic shoulders. Lots of stuff on the net from our american cousins about using the cheapo Prochrono series to ascertain MV, but when I try it with my old chrono, the velocities are a tad optimistic to say the least - 4300fps for one, and 3800 fps for the other. Tried the chrono nearer/further away, to no avail. I do not think it is the wad upsetting it - surely that would give low speeds not high speeds? Could the shock wave be triggering the first receptor just as the shot mass reaches the second? Am loth to put the unit a long way off in case the unit gets shot, even if I have had it years and it owes me nothing! Everybody says the Labradar will not work on SG (that's what I normally use for my rifles and pistols) - or is that an urban myth? M scratchin' 'is 'ead in Monmouthshire

Thanks, That confirms what I thought, I do have an explosives licence, and do store and use Blackpowder and Black powder substitutes in various weapons, but as they are so old and not having any data, I shall not bother with the BP. On the smokeless powders, I seem to remember that the time to self conflagration under normal conditions was something like 1000+ years, falling to 8 hours at high temperature (200 deg F sticks in my mind?) - so its off to dig a hole we go!! Hi, an old friend recently moved house and found a box of powders, probably from the 60's or possibly the 70's which he no longer has a certificate for, so gave them to me. If any one has any details on these powders, I would be grateful for any info. The two black powders have been opened, as has the tub of Unique, but the Nobel powder is still sealed. I imagine that the Unique is the original before Alliant took them over, but I seem to remember that the original was not as powerful as the present day stuff? Next question - are these powders still useable or should I just bury them? Pics attached M

Hi , not been on this site for a while, so hence the late response to this thead. As mentioned above, lots of warnings re Federal primers in hand held primer applicators. I use CCI primers in my hand held unit, but I have to use Federal for my 45-70 as the CCI ones regularly fail to go off. For the Federal I prime with the Lee ram prime which uses one primer at a time as recommended, so no chance of igniting the rest. Miseryguts in dark damp Monmouthshire

Hi Pops The Lee mould is for a 180gn bullet for 308 (bullet dia 309) and is still in production - the handles cost as much as the mould The Lyman mould is probably quite old, I think over 50 years, and is for a 0.28 calibre rifle. In the days when these moulds were sold, you specified the weight of bullet you wanted, and so this mould could be anything upto 179gn from 100gn. From the number of grooves/lands yours is probably mid way They sell very well in the states - I have seen auction figures in the three digit dollars (for just the mould) Might be worth hanging on to that one?? M

Hi, some time ago I saw a tub of the above in my local gunshop, and bought it - mainly because it made me laugh. Unfortunately cannot find any load data for metallic cartridges, only shotgun. It appears to be a very fast powder so should be good for pistol calibre loads? Any one used it? I load 357M, 44M, 45C, and use fast pistol powders for 308W and 45-70 subsonic loads M (twiddling thumbs in wet and windy Monmouthshire)

I flew hawks of various makes and sizes for some 15 years when much younger and fitter - that is one very fit hawk, it must be a wild take, no aviary bred bird can get to that level of fitness. Kudos to the handler - that level of sport requires full time work, there is no time for work or family to get to that level. Again, when younger and fitter, I used to go with a keeper friend who flew his golden eagle at hill fox in the Black Mountains. Hi Scotch If you do a search on e bay for induction heater, this unit comes up in the top listing in various guises, prices vary from £235 to £180 or so, they all ship from Grenfell, and they all have the same description which is obviously a bad chinese translation. All the Sellers also seem to have a poor grasp of english in their replies to bad feedback. Unfortunately anything other than these is double or more the price, and at that price level I can buy new brass every few loadings rather than anneal M tightfisted in Monmouthshire

Hi L, The induction heating idea appeals from its simplicity, but the units on E bay seem to be all the same Chinese copy, and the sellers all seem to be chinese shipping from the same uk warehouse and they all appear to have some horrendous negative feedback. So, did your unit work ok and does it do what it says on the tin? The prices do seem to vary a lot for the same unit, as do the delivery times from the same storage unit. Hi, a friend of mine has invested in a T3x in 243 calibre for deer shooting. He says that the twist rate is 1:10. He is working up loads on his 100yd range and has shot it with Sierra 70gn and Nosler 95gn with good grouping. Today he tried some Sierra 90gn TGK bullets, and they appear to be unstable and going through the target sideways. Is this just a mismatch between his rifle and this bullet or is his twist rate unsuitable for bullets of this weight? To my simple mind, I would have thought that if a 95gn bullet is ok then the 90gn bullet should also be ok? Powder loads are well below maximum, and there are no pressure signs whatsoever. Any one else experienced anything similar? M

Hi, Tikka are sound - my Varmint T3x in 12 inch twist is more accurate than I am. I use it on crows to 300 yards with 53gr Vmax Attached a gong shot yesterday at 305 yards(according to my laser range finder) M in sunny monmouthshire

Hi, I see this has cropped up again. I tried N32 in my 308 and 45- 70 when my friend gave me some to try. Unfortunately I could not get either rifle to group, and it was pretty dirty. So I am now back with my Green Dot loads for both rifles - both grouping nicely at 100 and 200 yards. Good luck to those trying it out I hope it works better for you. It certainly did for my friend - he swears by it. M in misty Monmouthshire
