one 6.5x47 load

Hi All . I am after some advice.

I want to develop and use one 6.5x47 Lapua load/round.

I only shoot paper or steel targets.

Could you recommend one weight bullet either a 123gr or 130gr that would be suitable for all ranges from 100 yards out to the occasional 1200meters.

My rifle Has a 26’’barrel and is magazine fed with a 1 in 8.5 twist

Thanks And

Morning And(y?)

I had success with 123g Scanars over 37.5g of R15 and the CCI 450 primer. It seems to be a good load in a few rifles using this cartridge.

But, in saying this I'm going to start again on loads with a new barrel so will be looking at 130g bullets such as Berger, JLK and possibly Norma Gold Target (if I can obtain some) plus some Lapua 'L' and different powders such as H4350, IMR 4451 and an 'RS' (not sure which one?) to arrive at 'one load' for the new barrel.

Occasional 1200 yards should not be a problem with this case.

Good luck. Terry

The mid weight bullets are better suited to this cart. You wont gain anything with heavier bullets as you are sacrificing too much velocity at safe pressures.

123 scenars at 2930 or 130 bergers at 2840 in my rifle. I consider these loads to be near max in my rifle.

123 grain Scenars @ 3027fps, and 130 grain Norma Diamonds @ 2938 from a 30" 8 twist Lothar barrel.

I'm using 140 Amax and ELD in mine. Always have used 140's in this calibre. Accuracy is sub 0.25 MOA and velocity is around 2750. Using H4350 it's a very unfussy load. It's is running the same velocity as my friends factory ammo in 6.5CM so I don't see why people think it's too heavy a bullet for this case. The 6.5 CM 140 Amax factory is winning competitions and setting the standards with this velocity. I shoot steel etc out to 1200 in all weather conditions including 35+ mph winds. The additional BC really excels over a lighter bullet at the longer ranges.

My barrel is 27 inches, I pushed the 123 scenars up to 3008 fps but I started to find slight ejector marks on the cases so I backed off again so I didnt consider this load safe.

Do you have any pressure signs?

Hi Simon,

I agree with you that the 260 and creedmore variants dont offer much more in terms of performance over the 47 cartridge. It seems to be splitting hairs and just to whatever cartridge is in fashion with the smiths at the time.

Though, how does youre 140 grain load compare with a lighter load at distance in the same conditions?

I started to get ejector marks at 3057 using RS52 powder, but with RS60, 3058 showed no signs, even with KVB-223 primers, which are a bit soft.

3000fps appears to be a "sweet spot" for the 123grainers, and still supersonic at 1200x.

At 2938, the 130grain Norma's are doing 1309 at 1200x.

I shoot 123 Scenars (Pointed) to 1200 through a 26" Border with a reflex type sound moderator and have had my best results with Varget powder and CCI 450 Magnum primers with a jump of .018"

I forgot to mention the COL for these results in my rifle :123 grain Scenars @ 3027fps, and 130 grain Norma Diamonds @ 2938 from a 30" 8 twist Lothar barrel.

It's 69.0 and 69.2mm respectively.
