What do all you lads drive around the fields in????????? Looking at getting myself some sort off road contraption for driving over bunnies and foxes as I am kind sick of shooting them ;) only jokin!!!!!!! Nah just want something to go lamping in and driving about the fields on those long summer evenings and not get stuck like i usually do in my current rig. Been looking at the following

Ford ranger

Mistibushi shogun

Land rover discovery

isuzu trooper

toyota landcruiser

so what do you think????I am buyng second hand, in around the 4k mark, I have seen loads in my price range but dont know which is the best, cheap parts are a big plus as in the price range I am buying they will throw up the odd problem, also what am I least liable to get stuck in and what takes the most repeated beatings????????????????

Hi Craig,

Mine is a 93 Toyota Hi-Lux Surf 3ltr TD, good value for money. Off road its superb, but its all down to tyres i think. Ive shooed it with some Pirelli Scorpion AT tyres, in my opinion they are the dogs on and off road.

I can't fault the car, but wished i'd spent a bit more and got a Landcruiser.

All the best,

Hi Craig,

Interesting topic! the best shooting related purchase I've ever made is my truck! I will second the suggestion that the tyres make a hell of a difference. Here is mine: Landcruiser with BF Goodrich ATs. Takes me everywhere, carries everything, never breaks and makes a good rifle rest as well! What more do you want ?? Don't know whether you will be able to find one for £4k, but for the extra money you will enjoy the satisfaction of pulling Landrovers out of the mud with it ;):D

Best wishes,

I've got a Daihatsu Sport Trak it is small light weight so doesn't cut the fields up.

DSCF0222.jpg

I've just put some mud terrian tyres on her so should be well kitted up.

Mark-taffy on here has one as well.

Light weight and cheap to run with the 1.6 fuel injected engine and £185 road tax.

In action in the field with Mark.

They all do pretty good I would say and truth is its got a lot to do with tyres and good ground clearance.I would always go for mud terrain tyres but you may have to put up with the noise on the road. Some 4x4,s may make less noise than others too. Most nimble and capable I have had is the little Suzuki jeep but probably too small for most and hard to find now I would imagine? My latest is a 98 Disco with auto box and have fitted Insa turbo sahara pattern mt,s,not had it too long yet but is as good as anything else i have tried i reckon and the auto box is brill fer creeping around.Onehole.

Yep i remember your first trip out onehole in my SJ 413!!!!!!:lol:

I now have the Vitara long wheel base / more room for all your gear and pretty nimble off road too!!!DSCF1144.jpg

I'm currently looking for another 4x4 too, I've has a Nissan Terrano and a Cherokee Jeep, to be frank the Jeep was great, the Terrano was OK but ended up on it's roof in the ice.

I'm quite impressed with the little Suzuki's after having a go in one, better on fuel too, and if like me it's only for shooting then what better, good on fuel, cheap road tax and loads of cheap parts available.

i have a hilux double cab its been a really good truck for the last few years , but it is going to have to go thanks to the fuel prices, it is chewing up over £50 a week in derv,so it will be a crappy white van for me. ;)

hi all

this is the truck i use at the mo, i have changed the back so i can get the dog in and more stuff,(stalking stuff) the back that was on it was really good for foxing as it was a very very good platform, you could if you felt the need stand on it.but as i say i have now got the conventional back on.

i changed the road tyres for BFG all terrains and i lost 5 MPG

Craig, I'd go for toyota, mazda, ford ranger or nissan pick-up.

I wouldn't go for a Landy.

Very important on a pick-up is that it should have ABS, without

they are deadly to drive.

I had an L200 a couple of years ago but because I never carried anything heavy in the load space it was bloody lethal in the wet, well with my driving any way. I hated the leaf springs in it. Last year I had a 1965 series 2a landy but the top speed was only 55mph not good on the M1 I can tell you lol.

I am currently looking for a landrover defender 90 county spec. I dont think you can do much better with a £4k budget, about the same as i'm looking to spend. And if you really want you could find a V8 model with an LPG conversion. Now that would be fun and at about 48 pence a litre no overly expensive to run.

untill a youg chap in a fiesta lost it on a left hand bend and took out the nearside whilst my mrs and young son were on board <_<

Now I have a 300 TDi

I aspire to one of these

But I doubt, I will ever manage the fuel costs

The small and nimble Dhiatsu is correctly shod a really good shooting wagon. I have had 3 Discos since 1993 and can generally recommend them, comfy to drive, versatile, plenty of internal room, places for bullet boxes etc ,easy to shoot out of or over the bonnet. Defender is Ok, I have had one of those as well untill my daughter introduced it to a big stone wall at speed. I was a guest in a new Defender last Saturday night, that was OK.

I am not impressed with the Traction Control on the newer Discos, got mine stuck twice when shod with Grabber ATs. With diff lock I think at least one would have been OK.

The traction control does work, I have been fortunate enough to go on a landrover experience day and those lads make the rest of us look like complete numptys. You cant just buy a 4x4 and expect to be able to get the best out of it without some tuition from an experienced person ( and that isnt your mate who has had one for years) it is well worth the effort and money. I have used and driven all types of off road vehicles, small to very big and thought I knew pretty well what there was to know. wrong!

I learned quite a bit in the Army years ago, but after the LR day I booked a day with an off road centre in North Wales and after that another in Cambridgeshire, I came away much wiser and able to get much more out of the vehicles and without scrapping them too. Dont know current cost but it isnt silly money and very well spent.

Since 2002/3 the disco is still available with central difflock and you can have a rear locking diff as well if you want.

Thanks for all the replies lads, some nice trucks there. I am sizing up a nissan terrano at the minute, I have little experience with Nissan's but from what I know they are a reliable machine and this one is in good nick at a decent price its old at 1997 but has been well looked after with lowish miles, I should be able to hammer them down on the price a bit. Only thing is its a petrol 2.5 litre or similar, dont know if thats a good thing or a bad thing, might be a little down on torque compared to the desiel but I dont really plan on doing anything extreme, just driving around the fields, if I need to go extreme I usually roll out the mk2 escort for abit of sideways fun <_<

Only concerns are that is petrol and that its quite a long machine but then there is plenty of room for all the kit and even for the odd weekend trip.

Anyone got experience with the terrano's?

Also I believe its non selctable 4wd all the time, at least I figure that much as it only has one stick, hopefully that works out ok.
