Foxshooter
I'm looking at buying myself a nice shiny chainsaw. I am flying out to the USA very shortly and wondered if I would get away with buying a nice new Stihl and bringing it home in my baggage as the difference in price is pretty blummin huge. UK price for a MS 531-CB-E £389, US price from a Stihl dealer £231 ($370) I suppose as=t worst I get caught for duty and VAT and it costs me the £390?? Anyone with suitable knowledge got an opinion of the saw and maybe a better alternative?? Mark
Shuggy
Bear in mind that you will need to purge and vent it completely of fuel and (probably) oil before they will allow you to check it in as hold luggage.
treetop
Go to a trade show on the last day with hard cash... Always worked for me.. Be flexible with the models you want ... They're not that different...... just make sure you pick it up & get a feel for it Still don't make major changes in there range... I have an 020t and a ms200t, there are only 2 differences.... One is 3 years older & the other has orange covers ! Try the dealers ... The smaller ones normally do better deals for cash.. Shop around, we are a big country with plenty of outlets ! You can always buy from Germany or France ..... Just go and pick it up on the train ! Good luck !
MrCetrizine
Don't forget the weight. Chances are you'd get hit for excess baggage and end up losing money.
17 Rem
Sounds a faff to me. I went out to buy a Stihl and came back with an Efco. I have never regretted it and saved myself money too.

Mark Just be wary of differences in US models and euro models (US usually less restricted and 'worse' emissions). There was a run of blue box US saws being sold cheap over here, only problem was that a lot of the dealers refused to service/repair them. If you decide to go with a UK saw I would recommend going for a Husky, it gets away from the whole 'No online sales' policy by Stihl. Pm me if you want some links for online shopping etc.

Foxshooter
Just got back from the US yesterday and after a little bit of faffing about to circumnavigate Stihls dealer protection sales policy I came back with a bargain. Stihl MS-250 (18" 45.4cc) $349-95 1x service kit $14.99 2x spare green link chains $54.98 All in a total of $453.93 which at the exchange rate of 1.6 that I got is equivalent of £283.71!! The RRP for the nearest UK equivalent is £525 The saw was dismantled and came back in my hold luggage. I just need to pop down to my local dealer and buy a sharpening kit but they're not very expensive. Given that bringing back shooting stuff from the US has been severely curtailed I think that a new saw each year or so could be just the thing :-) Mark

Foxshooter
For occasional home use, firewood and some small trees under 12" its more than adequate. I could have had one of the bigger Ranch saws for about another $40 but it was bigger than I really need and didn't 'feel' right in my untrained mitts. I don't need it to earn a living either Worst comes to the worst I will buy another bigger model next time I go. I certainly wont lose any money on this one! Chris-NZ
Totally agree. My 45cc Husky is a very good gen firewood saw. I only drag out the 94cc saw for very occasional big stuff and you can work 5X as long with the small saw before you're b*ggered.
Kevgun
That's a husky 3120xp 42 inch bar And 120 cc motor I bought one from the Chainsaw specialist.co.uk best price around and their service is excellent. Kevgun
forbie
Used to run husky's when I earned a living from it. Even the 61 were painfully low on power A 276XP with the rakers cut back a little was brilliant for rooting and sneddin. But it didn't matter what I cut it was always "light" go figure
