Hi all,

I am in the market for a M4 carbine , what i would like advise on is what sort/make should i be looking for as i want to take it to the range and shoot from 100-300 yards and this fetches me to the next question what sort of accuracy can i expect out of one of these.

regards chris

I bought a Bradley Arms upper for my existing lower last year, Armalon 1 in 200mm hammer forged barrel, I have been absolutely amazed at the accuracy, way beyond what my expectations were.

Consistently more accurate than the last two heavy barrel factory bolt action .223s I had before it. And doesn't seem to care whether you clean it or not, its still shooting very tight groups with the bore uncleaned for 300 rounds since the last thorough clean. Its accounted for a lot of long range vermin. I killed an unfortunate rabbit at a silly distance first shot last night, it was far enough away that his pal hopped over to him to see what had happened, I quit while I was ahead! ;)

i have tried to get in touch with mark a few times but i think he must be very busy at the moment.

Hi Colin,

I am indeed flat out at the moment, it's often like that when you are a one man band.

So apologies for not responding to the last message, however it seems like Mr Farmer7 has answered some of your questions.

I mostly use barrels from Armalon these days. Used to use Border....but I think we all know the problems there.

Not only is it convenient to get barrels made to my own specs (profiles) by Mr Sarony, but I defy anyone to find a better finished barrel bore anywhere.

They are superb.

Accuracy is accuracy, and the only thing a shorter barrel gives up is velocity. In fact my M4 barrels are Hbar profile and therefore heavier than my other ones.

I've no doubts to the accuracy potential.

ps, email and PM etc can be a pain at times....phone calls are much better :)

Last thing (for others) M4 refers specifically to 14.5" barrels or shorter, as it's the 4th Carbine to ever be officially adopted by the US Mil, everything else is an AR15

If going 'full pedant' , isn't it even tighter than that? To be M4s wouldn't they have to be made by Colt and have longer feedramps? And what happens when the military stick a longer SBR barrel on an M4, does it cease to be an M4?!:) M4orgery?

Matt, this could play and play (but not spray and pray?)

On pedant burst fire we might add in model 6920MP;Comp CRX; Ro920/921 and 0977/979 variants....and how good was your C81UR (Colt Canada-or is it Di Marco?!) There will be more, but this isn't my research specialism-I'm not even sure if a rifle was not Govt military issued ,whether it really is an M4..?? A 4gery would imply intent to deceive...('smellie' rat?)..but has some charm...

Why can't they just be like us-everyone knows what a Lee Enfield 303 is.....simples..:-)

Or we can bite the head/bullet (223 isn't it) and call them M4 types-good enough for non govt. work/casual description?

I'll get my coat..

Following on from gbals usual load of verbage.....

Bradders and Baldie are the way to go for a quality rifle, they are very helpful.

If you have time and interest a good place to start book wise would be The Competitive AR15 by Brand Cole.

The secondhand section at the moment has some nice looking rifles in it if you are on a budget.

Helpful advice.

Book has more 'verbage' than it's title.

Much forbidden fruit.

They've got the M4 feed ramps now and more companies than Colt® now officially make them.

They've also gone for a heavier barrel now.

If and when they stick a longer barrel on it it will be given a different nomenclature, but the Car-15 (XM177) was never officially adopted.

This is my specialist subject BTW Magnus

Was a lovely night with barely a puff of wind so thought I'd see how it would group at longer range. Plates lasered at 530 yards, adjusted up 3.5mils and right 0.3mils. Was quite delighted to see the small plate spinning round on the cold bore shot, (wasn't expecting to hit it but shot at it because I didn't want to make a mess on the large plate for the five shot group!)

Then five shots on the larger plate, 5 shots a hair over 3 inches. Its only one group but I'd say it was indicative of what I've managed on paper out to 400 yards so far.

Impressive! I should be picking up a very similar rifle from Bradders on Sat - praying for the same performance! (What are you putting through it?)
