Lens replacement eye surgery

Has anyone had lens replacement eye surgery and are using a rifle scope. I’m particularly concerned if they still have to water glasses when shooting.

Many thanks

Hi Bryn.

I had a detached retina about 2 years in my left eye. I got a new lens and all is great.

I shoot using my right eye  so this did not affect me as such.

When they did the operation they " adjusted " the prescription to 3, down from 5.

I have worn contact lenses or specs all my life. After the operation I decided to stop wearing contacts and only wear specs.

My eyesight in my left eye is much brighter and the colours are stronger too. White is really really white for example.the colour white in my right eye is a slight cream colour.

This is because my right eye the natural lens is now 64 years old.

It has been subjected to abuse over these years and has got ( compared to left eye) very slight yellowish tinge to it and is not so bright. A bit like old head lights in cars going yellow.

I never noticed this before as I nothing to compare it with!

Only noticeably if I close my right eye and compare the two.

The point I am making is, if the operation was a success( which I hope it was) you will probably  have better eye sight in that eye.

I would think if you wore specs before the operation you MAY still have to wear specs or maybe not.

Hope this helps.

Cheers

Isn't  that the same as cataract surgery? A very longsighted (+5.0) mate had his cataracts done some years ago, and the lenses they installed made it possible for him to see clearly without glasses for the first time in his life......he was in his 80's and still driving.

Morning All....before having both cataracts done the consultant asked me if I had any preferences as to which lens he put in. I told him I shoot long range out to 1000yds & he put the appropriate bias into the lenses, the downside being that I had to have glasses for reading, which I'd done for years anyway...... The results were amazing. Regarding the changes in the strength of colours once you have them done, they call that the Monet effect. Apparently as he got older & his cataracts developed he painted as he saw it, but the colours were actually more & more pastel, so his paintings got less & less vivid....

I couldn't believe the colour of a new settee I'd bought six months before having them done! 🤣🤣🤣🤣

Had both eyes done at the Gemini clinic 2 years ago. Results have been excellent. Close up without glasses I can see individual clicks on S&B turrets and out to distance. Some of the best money I’ve spent.

From a post I did:

This may be of interest to some.

I have always required contact lenses so as my eyes have aged and with the onset of cataracts I decided after consulting my optician to go to the the Gemini eye centre ( Czech Republic). I received thorough high-tech examinations and very professional service. They end up with a computer model of your eyes with multiple overlays of data and issues (the examination is paid for in my case by the NI). I was given the results and they went through the pros and cons of each option. My astigmatism creates some issues but best solution for me was Toric multi focal implant lenses. The natural lenses are removed ( I think) and the implants  are then inserted- restoring near, middle, distance sight and getting rid of cataracts. This is the least invasive method as it avoids the need any further laser treatment. Naturally it’s the most expensive (£2500, for both eyes). This includes an aftercare visit.

The lenses need to be custom ordered / made for my prescription so it took a few weeks and I needed to go back again for the operation.

Other methods would have involved having a more standard lens implanted and using laser to shape the eye ( remove the astigmatism) but this is a more invasive procedure requiring 2 operations.

I’m going to go for the best option of course. It’s impressive how they can model your eye, show you the modelling, explain in laypersons terms your individual issues and let you make a decision without pressure - they wanted me to think about it for a few days but it seems very clear to me, so decision made.

I delayed the operation for 6 months - when I had the required free time for recovery. I had my eyes operated on this week. Surprisingly I didn’t feel any pain just pressure during the operation (takes about 5 minutes per eye). White light used during the operation was unpleasant though. I was able to see immediately after the operation but blurry. The day after my eyesight was much better than it was when I was wearing contact lenses - not surprising as it also gets rid of any cataract issues. I have much better short and long vision than I can remember ever having. Hopefully as my eyes heal there should be a little more improvement. I should be able to drive after a week  but lifting 10kg or more, sports, and swimming I can only do after a month. Also you need to wear sun glasses for a month when outdoors to avoid dust entering the eyes. Medication is antibiotic eye drops and other eye drops and a local check-up within 3-5 days.

All in all very professional service ( they speak English) - they re-measured / checked  my eyes on the day of the operation as it had been 6 months from my previous visit plus a full pre-op consultation.

I opted for laser rather than ultrasound for the operating technique - it cost £300 more but I want the best where my eyes are concerned. The lenses etc came to about £2500 so around £2800 in total. I’m very happy with that. The examination may not have been included in the price - paid for by the Czech  NHS I think as I live there.

All in all for anyone considering such a procedure I had a very positive experience and would recommend the Gemini Eye Clinic, Zlin, Czech Republic.

Air travel apparently is possible after the operation but I would recommend a short stay in Cz after the operation and to get the 3-5 day check- up done here.

I had my lens replaced in both eyes, cataracts. I still wear glasses. One eye before surgery was 20/450 the other 20/200 so I matched them at 20/200 huge improvement for me. I'm also presbyopic so that bit of fun ensures a need for glasses.

A detached retina is not the same as cataracts.

Cataracts is on the front lenses of the eye.  The retina is at the back of the eye which collects ( receives) the image from the front lense, put simply.

The detached retina operation is 4 hours under general anaesthetic. Spent 2 days after operation in hospital bed with patchs on both eyes. After the operation when i got home I had to sit at a table ( or similar) with my head facing down with head resting on my folded arms all day for 2 weeks to make sure the gas bubble they put in my eye is kept in the correct position.  These  is to make sure the new " lense" is presed against the rear of the eye. This 2 weeks MUST be done to ensure complete success of the operation.

I was allowed 5 minutes ,3 times a day for toilet and eating.

Also 28 eye drops each day for about 6 weeks but it has all worked out perfect

  • 2 weeks later...

I've had the lens replacement surgery and I am very please with the results so far, choosing  Extended Depth of Focus lenses which am please to say are not an issue when using scope sights.
