Roundhouse Rifle Challenge - Zeroing & Practice Christmas Shoot

Recommended Posts

First point - Big thank you to Tiff's parents out as sentries again, it was bad enough on the point in that wind, without them we wouldn't be enjoying ourselves like we do.

As usual a great day set up by Tiff & co. To say the wind was challenging was an understatement compared to the last meet, still, most blokes who engaged at 640 managed to score a handful of hits.

It was great to meet some other members of the forum, John, thanks for bringing the armoury down.

Ian F, cheers for the tuition regarding stalking sticks, hits at 200 yards standing in that wind, good effort me!

Regards

Carl

Ah, yes - conditions could kindly be described as 'challenging'! : Really great to put some names to faces and hear the constant 'chinking' of plates being wacked. Some lovely hardware being used to good effect - enough to make a man start contemplating a dedicated long-range setup!

Highlights? Well, watching him ringing gongs & working out that 'Exeter Lad' has an unfair advantage - at 6'9" he is closer to the targets than the rest of us! Seeing the look on the the face of a first time C/F shooter (sorry I missed your name) merrily wacking steel at silly distances. Trying not to drool at John MH's flagrant display of gun-porn. Shooter79 successfully using sticks to flatten plates at 200m...... standing :o ! Sheep blowing past like tumble-weeds as the wind hit 45mph! Yep, everyone got something out of the day.

Tiff has put together a really lovely set-up at RRC - it has huge potential. If you haven't already - you really have to make the journey down to these 'yer parts and experience the flexibility and options he can offer to a keen shooter.

Having the option of retreating into the warm and dry only thirty yards behind the firing point is excellent, while the onsite accommodation makes arranging a trip very straight-forward. Did I mention it is cheap as well?

Again, thanks for setting up a great day - looking forward to catching up at the next!

Rgds

Thank you all for the kind words and making it such an enjoyable day to host. My parents have just about thawed out and equally say thank you for the comments….they may even come again!

The wind certainly proved challenging; with more yards held off, than inches dialled in….. I've spent this afternoon/evening collecting in some very bent & buckled flag and marker posts!

Here are some pictures of the day:

A great bit of teamwork, resulted in some excellent 640 yard hits:

Sako 75 .243 stretching the legs of his relatively new rifle, in perhaps less than ideal conditions:

I was sceptical at first, but it proved a very effective set-up, engaging the 10" steels at 500 yards with 95gr BT's:

Some impressive shooting with the .260 at 640 yards, spectacular really considering the bipod was literally falling apart…

As a footnote, amazingly we definitely had the better day of the weekend. At around 4pm Saturday the hail & rain joined the wind and hasn't stopped since! The numerous swollen river crossing collecting kit this afternoon, involved more ropes and swimming than is perhaps preferable in December....

Continuing the Christmas spirit, I ran the 100 yard facility for the BDS SW today f.o.c., getting 14 guys from 42 Cdo RM (Recce Troop, ML's & Snipers) through their DSC level 1 shooting assessments. A great bunch, who where certainly cheerful in the face of extreme conditions, with everyone passed in under 3 hours. Which was helpful, considering it closed in so much the 100 yard targets started disappearing in the gale force horizontal rain.

Anyways thanks again everyone, I'm knackered, so will sign off here.

Cheers,

Tiff

Fixed now, the Aluminium pan tensioner on steel thread is just not up to the job and should either be steel (increasing the weight on an already heavy bipod) of have a helicoil fitted. I have temporarily replaced the thread stripped tensioner with a steel captive nut and tommy bar, the aluminium tension is being fitted with a helicoil this evening.

Tiff,

A big thanks to you and your parents. I'm still amazed at your hard work ethic. You deserve to make a success of your venture.

Despite the blustery conditions I still enjoyed myself, although yes it would have been a much better first attempt at distance without it.

I must have togged up well on the Saturday because I didn't get cold at all. Oh, by the way if you found any reading glasses can you put then aside safe till the next event.

Glenn, happy to share cost of transport from Bristol next time.

Happy Xmas all.

Mike

Great day, wind was very challenging but with a bit of spotting by Tiff I was hitting 10" square plates at 500ydrs, Got to meet some really nice guy's.

Tiff give your Mum And Dad a big thank you from all of us for sitting out in the cold and wind so we could have some fun.

Can't wait until the next one.

A Merry Christmas to every one, and lets have less wind in the new year.

As a follow up, I'd like to thank everyone who has attend shoots at the Roundhouse this year. The response from forum members to commit to a relatively unknown event has been really appreciated.

It has been a very steep learning curve for me setting-up / running the days and I'd like to thank everyone for not falling through the occasional crack….both metaphorically and physically in the case of the granite outcrops!

I'm almost finished re-organising the way future Roundhouse Rifle Challenges will be hosted, to enable them to be run more efficiently all round.

The plan is to hold two key shoots a year - one main event a week after Easter and the other in early autumn (t.b.c.). The first will always be a much more dynamic 25-700m shoot and the latter, a dedicated long range prone day. Each event will have a warm up afternoon, full challenge day and subsiquent optional practice shoot.

Details will follow shortly about the first shoot on Fri 25th - Sunday 27th April 2014.

Many thanks,

Tiff

The April date is ideal for me as I'll have just returned from two weeks shooting and shopping in the US.

John, can you source me some gear if you have the room please?

Tiff if those dates are set in stone I will put a leave request in tonight.

The April dates are confirmed. I will need to check with the Army/SAS, since they use the neighbouring land for exercises - but normally they only give an hours warning before they drop in. People that attended the first RRC will remember the Sea King that was sent over to see what was going on…apparently (I found out after) the guys were dropped next door from 600ft the night before!

I'll get a new thread running soon.

Just had that weekend denied.

Also just had a word with my mate at Hereford. They want to do an exercise that weekend.

Best move it to the weekend of 2nd 3rd and 4th May ;)

Oh bad luck on leave….no chance at all?

The location is fully booked with other activities each weekend till mid August….so if you could ask your chap at Hereford to stay out the way or come over and have a play, that would be most appreciated :D

New thread is now up and running in the Tactical comp section:
