thanks gunnery the more info on ftr people can give the better please.what do i need shooting card etc?memberships?

there is a 500 ftr/fclass match on saturday just come along with at least 30rnds and whatever set up you have.

you can shoot as a guest under the wing of another member -you pay for the comp and as a non member a range fee be there for 9.30 its a very good relaxed atmosphere and will suite a novice to target shooting.

im sure Laurie or Vince will add to this.

i joined offas dyke as they shoot at kingsbury which is close to me,i have only shot once and not for one min do i mean to sound negatve but the norm seems to shoot and patch so at the end of it i have no real idea how i shot.no group size or target to look at or info to build on.if i'm honest i thought diggle was a bit far but after the egg shoot and fly last year i feel it could be well worth the trip.

You will be most welcome to shoot with us at Diggle. We shoot F Class/FTR every fortnight. Course of fire is always 2 sighters and 20 to count. We like to get going by 10.30am so aim to get to the range for about 10.00am.

You can shoot as a visitor initially - no shooter card needed - just bring your FAC. If you would like to join eventually - no problem.

If you are in the F/TR class it's 308 or 223 - shot off a bi-pod and with a back-bag. The obvious choice is 308 but there are always those who like a challenge! There is always a wide range of shooters from GB Team standard to raw beginners.

As Gary W says, we've a 500 yd shoot this Saturday - please come along.

I was at Kingsbury on Sunday shooting on target 12 with the Hereford and Worc club. The trick is to make use of plot cards and this shows you your group size. Someone at Offas will show you how to fill in the cards. If not come over the next time we shoot there and I'll show you what to do.

Cheers

i have asked at offas if i can masking tape my own targets up when i shoot but have not heard back yet as john sadly lost his wife just over a week ago.but this ftr sounds up my street and a bit of friendly competition allways helps improve your skills.

well i went to diggle today,it was up there with any days shooting i have had.the weather was spot on and the welcome very warm.a special thanks to garyw for showing me the ropes today.a big thanks to vince laurie gunnery for their time before and during.it was a deal clencher for me and i have decided to become a member.the 2 hour each way drive is well worth it to shoot in such a nice spot with a good crowd.the trusty 223 was doing me proud but i think chris p must have forgotten his glasses as he could not see 2 of my shots despite them being very close to the bull somewere but i wont hold it against him :D .

see you all again soon

I'm glad you enjoyed it Mike - see you again. Only don't expect todays' weather every time - it's reserved for one day per year maximum!

i was out again today at kingsbury i found out a few things.

a 308 has no real drop or wind advantage out to 600 infact the 223 with 75 amax was better at fighting wind and a bit flatter.i thought those 308 heavys would have been much better.

whilst shooting today i managed a cracking bull on the wrong target  so it looks like with one eye on the wind flag one on my level one on the target i seem to run out of eyeballs when it comes to checking the number.

in short there is a remote chance it wasn't chris needing speks and was most likely me shooting the wrong target yesterday.i'm supprised no one shouted up mind.

mental note to self shoot the correct target.

That's interesting. My experience when in the butts and marking targets at Kingsbury is that the .308 beats the pants off the .223. In windy conditions I've noticed much larger groups from the smaller calibre shooters. Is there a technical/ballistics answer to this that either proves or disproves my observations.

i sat there and ran it through bullet flight

example

10 mph wind at 600 my 223 = -34.3 in 308 168grn = -36.1 150 grn 308 =38.4

drop at 600 223 - 91.3 308 168grn -102.3 150 grn 308 =96.3

If you run it through the Sierra ballistics calculator for the 155 grain bullet compared to the .223 75 grainer, both the drop and wind drift for the .308 is less than the .223.

I have also found through experience on my home range at Severnside, where a 10 mph wind is a calm day, the .223 loses out against the .308 once you get beyond 200 yards.

I'll post the exact stats tomorrow (I'm using my laptop which doesn't have the Sierra Ballistics software on) but if you go by muzzle energy (ME) alone a 75 grain bullet with a MV of 3000 fps has a max muzzle energy of 2032 joules whereas a 155 grainer with a MV of 2800 has a ME of 3660 J.

This tells you that bullet drop and the wind effect of the .308 is less than the .223. From memory, at 600 yds with a 10 mph wind, the .308 is 4mins less than the 223.

I can only add that when its been my turn in the butts the 223 loses out to the 308 in windy conditions.

I'm sure that Laurie and Vince will bear and this.

Download Strelok to your smart phone and you'll see the ballistics favour the .308 after 200 yards. ;)
