Finally got my sticky little mitts on one of my own......

This came in as a P/X from a friend, who wasn,t using it. My mate has a penchant for Krylon "rattle can " and if it doesn't move ....it gets some....

I stripped off all his erm...paint, and firstly Ceracoated the metalwork in Armour black "H" series.

The stock had cleaned up reasonably, but i wasn't happy. So whilst i was painting another custom pattern on a stock for a customer, i figured i might as well do this one too.

Not sure what, but as its an Austrian gun, i thought german army flectarn would be good.

The rifle has had a home made trigger tamer made by the previous owner, and it breaks at 5 lbs....absolutely lovely for one of these. Up front is a Ratworx picatinny rail.

Its crap with milsurp, but boy does it shoot 77 grain homeloads.

Gonna pop a schmidt and bender shortdot on top later.

I managed to keep 5 rounds inside a 1" target disk with it propped on top of a bean bag at 100 yards at the weekend.

Thats pretty good for what is in effect a service rifle.

Very nice. I have used lots of AUGs and can only say that compared to the HK G36 that replaced them they are very good. AUG would shoot hold MOA all day. G36 is lucky to hit a dinner plate at 100 metres. Last used one on 12 March 1991 And made front page of the Morning Star!

That's a belter Dave, cracking paint job!

I fired one of these on full auto in the US, and the sound of the springs amplified through the stock was spectacular. It was fitted with one of these charging handles, which I suspect would help to avoid bark removal on your hand.

Hi Dave

What do you think of the bipod fixture-seems to replace the swivel down front grip.I've been trying to fit a bipod on mine for a couple of months, doesn't seem any easy solution-for a non gunsmith,I mean! Thanks.

The bipod fixture is a very well engineered product George, that is more complicated than it looks.

The guy i got the gun from reckoned it didn,t shoot well off the bipod, as he thought it was pushing the barrel independant of the scope. I dont think it can. The breech is captive, and the barrel is also captive within the reciever at the point the bipod is fixed at. He was using milsurp ammo that didn,t shoot very well when i tried it, but my handloads were excellent off the bean bag. I have yet to try it off the bipod.

I,ll let you know. :)

Nice!I love AUGs. I used to sell them back in the early eighties. (You don't want to know what they sold for!) Does that rifle remain an autoloader? ~Andrew

Hi Andrew,

As Dave says,we can't have self loaders anymore(apart from rim fire 22).I would not have cared to buy an Aug-especially a green one-when they were at their US peak price- $k's.The last batch over here were going for about $1300.Manual,of course,so possible extraction issues on very hot loads, indifferent trigger-though Tamer helps, hard to a bipod, fiddle to clean,no right hand male chickening options. But quite accurate with decent ammo-1 moa seems about par.And a lot of fun,and different from the generic AR15s (which were/are almost double the price,basic)-we,of course, can have moderators quite easily so that helps.A 6.5 Grendel option would have been interesting!

That looks quite cool!

I have a sudden urge to watch Die Hard.

...But we can't get those sparky bullets here!

A partial therapy is to gently caress a 6.5x54 MS carbine,,or .275 Rigby, but not have to choose just one of the three.

I thought that it might be a straight pull but one never knows who one is conversing with on forums. Still, nice stuff. When I sold AUG's they were $695 US, out the door. (For reference, a HK 91 was less then $500 back then) I had a young family and was working at a gunshop in New Mexico for $6 an hour. AUGs were as far out of my reach as the moon. Otherwise I'd have bought six of them!

I did shoot a couple. My dentist bought one and I would supply inexpensive ammo and we'd shoot out to 300M. When 2nbd hand magazines would come into the store I would buy them at cost and trade them for dental work! Great rifle. Very functional and very accurate with the "ring" optical sight it had.(sigh!)~Andrew
