What S1 shotgun?

Foxshooter

Recommended Posts

My FAC renewal is up shortly (had the visit tonight)

I have a slot for S1 shotgun that if I dont fill it I will lose. What recommendations do you have for a suitable purchase. Funds arent unlimited.

I have heard of a Rem 1100(I think)locally for about £350 but dont know if they are worth considering?

I know some of you on here have some interest in PSG so some advice on whats good and what isnt as well as things to look for when buying etc would be appreciated.

Hi Mark,

Depends what you want it for, if just for rough shooting, pigeon decoying or similar it's possible to pick up an older model pump or auto at a reasonable price. I've bought Browning A5's, Winchester '97's and Model 12's for £350 or less, less desireable guns like Mossbergs are even less,

I dont really want a dedicated pump only I'm sure about that at least. If it s optional S/A and pump then at least I have a choice.

I quite liked the feel of a friends Benelli M4 but I fear that it may be out of my price range!

That probably explains why it felt so nice. Forbidden fruit and all that.

Typical.

Just had a browse of the benelli web site. Typical that all the tactical style shotguns would be S5 here.

M2 Benelli is about the best. If you want the choice of pump or auto, then the M3 is a good shotgun. The winchester sx3 is also worth a look. The 1100,s were good shotguns, but that one isn,t cheap at £350.

The newer 11/87 is a better bet. Loads of bits for it.

Cheers Dave. I hoped you would add your 2ps' worth

I will start a look around asap. The benelli sounds the best/nicest option but I dont know if I can afford it

I baught a benelli 3.5inch Nova 5 shot pump for £120, restricted it got it reproofed as a shotgun. used it for 4 years wildfowling and sold it.... still got my money and abit extra back on it, section 1 shotguns are getting hard to get on ticket now, iv heard of gamekeepers even being refused. Dealers are literally giving some of the older semi-auto and pump models away!!

Hi Shrek,

Strangely enough, Surrey Police seem fairly relaxed about Section 1 shotguns. Pigeon shooting seems adequate reason to grant approval for a S1,

Cheers

Can somebody just clarify what makes a shotgun section 5?

Just had a look at the Benelli M4 mentioned above and certainly looks a nice tool, is it because it is too short or too many rounds or something else?

I mean it is not as if it is full auto.............:blink:

section 5 is if the overall length is less than 36 inches, hence you can have a 20 inch barrel as long as the fixed length of the stock takes it over 36 inches.

no reason why an m4 would be section 5 with the right length of barrel and stock. regards david.

No you cant. Any semi auto or pump action shotgun cannot have a barrel length of less than 24" in the UK, otherwise its section 5. Side by sides or "coach guns" are not covered by this law, but the overall length law.

The M4 Benelli is not allowed on section one license full stop.

Otherwise i would have one. :D

No apology necessary David. :)

I only got to the bottom of the coach gun law last National meeting at Bisley, where a couple of the guys were shooting cutdown side by sides in the classic shotgun comp. Some were only 18" barrels. I that which promotes growth and vigour a brick. However, the guys are members of the blue team, or the police team, so they had checked. :D

Shooting slug from an 18" barrelled side by side gives you a chubby.....

benelli sl 121 or 123 i've had my benelli sl123 5 shot since 1984 and all i've ever replaced is the firing pin in all that time my father had his benelli since 1979 or 1980 he's replaced two firing pins(£12 each) can't advise on the build quality of newer benellis but the old ones are built to last easy to field strip if required (never been required other than when firing pin snapped about 10 years ago)

they are like rocking horse poo to get hold of but you won't regret getting one

good luck

not 100% sure what a chubby is but slug from an 18" side by side sounds like too much fun to be legal.

regarding the original question, my s1 shotgun is a 1960`s winchester 120 ranger. a bit long in the tooth (and the barrel :D ) but good fun nonetheless. regards david. :)

Hi guys

Hopefully I shall have my renewed FAC with a S1 shotgun for practical and target shotgun use. I've done a bit of research and, whilst the Benelli M2 is the way to go, what about the Hatsan Escort MPA at circa £400 new.

Any constructive comments would be appreciated please.

Thank you

Dont touch the hatsan. Someone, who thought they knew what they were doing at hatsan, decided to design a practical shotgun.

They didn,t.

Dont mess about, buy an M2, there isn,t a finer practical shotgun.

Two lads at our club have bought Hatsans. One has been back to the factory over a dozen times. The other owner is looking at getting rid as it really is not very good

Hi John,

A few years ago I was in a similar position to yourself and was looking at a number of options.

I looked at the M2, Saiga 12, Winchester and I also looked at a number of cheap imports.

While the appeal of the very low cost options is appealing, it's only that cheapness that's the selling point.

After a good deal of research and testing different models, I settled on the M2.

It an exellent and very reliable bit of kit. It performs flawlessly and has had hundreds and hundreds of rounds with never a stoppage.

Kind Regards

Rob
