n8ess
During the shooting show at Newark last weekend, I was given a copper cleaning demo by the very nice lads on the Riflecraft stand. I thought I would conduct some soaking tests to see which was would dissolve the most copper over a 24hr period. I have always had good results with KG12 but during the Riflecraft demo I was impressed with the amount of colour coming off a bronze brush onto a patch. The initial wipe test showed that the Riflecraft cleaner reacted dramatically with the copper head and you get a bright blue tinge reaction leaving the head nice and shiny. When you use the Kg you don't get the blue tinge but more of a very dark tea stain colour which heavily dulls the head as if it is removing a layer. I weighed a couple of 100g heads to ensure they were the same weight and put them in spoons to soak overnight. http://i417.photobucket.com/albums/pp252/n8ess/kGvsRiflecraft.jpg http://i417.photobucket.com/albums/pp252/n8ess/spoons.jpg http://i417.photobucket.com/albums/pp252/n8ess/Riflecraft.jpg http://i417.photobucket.com/albums/pp252/n8ess/KG.jpg The results showed that the Riflecraft bore cleaner dissolved 0.1g of copper from the head whist the KG dissolved 0.5g. My tests have shown that the KG does remove more copper over a set period of time. What I have learned from the tests, is the benefits of leaving the products to soak for a period allowing them to break down the copper rather than continually pushing through multiple patches. whoowhoop
Thanks for that - real food for thought, there.
Gandy
Very interesting that, I guess I was sucked in by the rifecraft claims!
eldon
Interesting. Nice set of tests thanks for sharing.
The Gun Pimp
KG used to do a nice trick at IWA to demonstrate the effectiveness of hteir copper-cleaner. They had several dishes with various copper solvents and a penny in each. By the end of the show only the KG penny had part-dissolved. Reason? Cooper solvents NEED oxygen as a catalyst but KG is water-based so contains oxygen. Neat trick! Vince

dannywayoflife
Very interesting experiment! Kg12 seems like the product to buy then.
