Thanks for the clarity on the 6PPC Vince.👍

Never having owned one, I couldn’t say for sure, but my comments were based on what I’ve read in various places over the years. Always learning!

I would say that almost every competitive 6PPC benchrest shooter on the planet is using something between 28.5 and 29.5 grains of Vit 133 behind a 66 - 68gn FB bullet. It just works.

Yeah, don’t bother. The hassle and cost will far outweigh anything positive about the cartridge.

As Baldie and I said, either get yourself a 6PPC (probably most accurate cartridge ever but beware, can be a pain in the butt to get shooting...very finicky by all accounts) or simply use the 6mmBR, an option for any rifle with a  .308w sized bolt head. There is almost nothing in it between all these cartridges. But as the 6mmBR is such a proven winner...and will be infinitely cheaper to get setup than going the totally custom route of 6mmARC...that to me is the no-brainer option.

I would agree - go for the 6BR BUT - re the 6PPC - once you've done with the case-forming, neck-turning etc if you use a 1 in 14 twist barrel and FB bullets in the 68gn range and Vit 133 powder it's probably one of the easiest cartridges to tune.  You will struggle to shoot 5-shot groups bigger than a half MOA at 100 yards - that's why it's ruled the benchrest competition circuit for decades and holds all the accuracy records out to 300 yds.

However if you're not shooting competitive benchrest and you want a little 'six' - stick with the 6BR - the everyman's version. It still holds the UK record for a 5-shot group at 1000 yards.

That’s a weird placement for the PodLock. mine doesn’t look like that. My spigot has the PodLock, not the bridge.
Looks like the bridge was originally a 6 o clock version, then the user switched the picatinny spigot upside down and placed the PodLock in the top where the proper torx bolt should go.

Id say that if you had a ‘genuine’ 12 o clock bridge and picatinny spigot, then you should have enough clearance.

Yeh, I did move the locking lever to the top - so it's easy to adjust when you set up and I never remove the fixing, so the Allen screw is fine on the side.

  4. Are talking about building a custom rifle for say F Class around a standard Remington action rather than using a custom action of similar proportions?

If you were building say a lightweight tactical rifle, then the std. Remmy action will likely serve you well. However, if you want to hang a heavy 30 inch barrel off the relatively flimsy Remmy (massive ejection-pot & mag feed cut-out) for F Class then maybe not - especially if you are looking for sub half MOA accuracy.

Not a good idea to build your custom rifle around something which may not then live up to expectations.  One option used to involve stiffening the action with a glued on aluminium sleeve but add that to the cost of a bit of accurising and you're in the realms of a custom action price-wise. (See attached pic).

Yes - you will hear all the "my mate had a Remmy that'd put 'em all down one hole bla bla bla."  But why take the chance?

Keep your eye on the 'sales' section - there are some absolute bargains to be had on custom rifles ordered on a whim and "only fired 200 rounds...".

I know of at least two benchrest rifles built on custom actions by top 'smiths going for £1500 c/w Jewel trigger - just need a new barrel to suit your chosen discipline. Check out Brian Fox's stock - you're not too far from Diggle.

I'm afraid most of these long range rifles are beyond my more modest budget constraints as at roughly £5 per "bang" and lots of practice needed it's something that would benefit from a team approach with sponsorship otherwise it's a wealthy man's sport!

Each to his own but, in reality, it's less than half that for 338 / 33XC reloads. These days, travel and accommodation is often the biggest expense.

You can get to 3 km at Warcop

Landmark may be a limiting factor but it’s an absolutely ideal venue - someone with interest and contacts could investigate this for that purpose

A new club, that is  independent may be the way forwards with someone at the helm who has no agenda other than promoting long range shooting in the uk may also be the best way forwards

Start afresh - UK 2 Mile Shooting Association perhaps ?

For me - it's got to be about competition - ideally to established KO2M rules - not plinking at Warcop.  But yes - I  agree, a new UK2MSA might be a good idea.

    Excellent.

That will promote marksmanship, rather than reliance on hardware.

Dave and others - whilst we are in this lockdown period, I'm trying to generate some UK interest in ELR via articles on targetshooter.co.uk.

I'm currently building a rig - is anyone else?  I know JMH has a 33XC ready to go and I know of a couple of other ELR guns that are up and running.

The future of KO2M / ELR in the UK is dependent to some extent on the future development of Eskdalemuir (and that other range close by).  Does anyone have any further information?  Clearly, once UK ranges are in a position to host proper competitions it should stimulate the interest in building suitable rifles - now is the perfect time to get that build under way.

If anyone is building something or has any info on ranges you can email me on targetshooteronline@icloud.com and we'll put it out there.

I remember painting a Cheytac Intervention many years back. I had to have 3 goes at blasting the action, it was that heavy, I couldn't hold it up, in the blasting booth long enough!

What struck me about that rifle, was the massive tolerances it was built too. The bolt didn't have thou's of clearance.....they were millimetres !

Guess what......made no difference to how it shot.

To be honest, looking at the vids, they all seem to be bigger F class rigs. Which leaves me cold. If it cant be shot from a normal bipod and bean bag...I aint interested.

    Dave,

It has to be shot from a normal bi-pod - new rules state that the bi-pod must be foldable within 10 seconds and be no wider than 8 inches when folded.  The Light class has an all up weight of 25lbs - with scope and bi-pod - not much heavier than a 338 AI?  Back bag is your choice.

According to my ballistic calculator a 139gr scenar in my 6.5x47 the bullet will drift 84 inches in a 10mph full value wind

My 184gr hybrids in my 7mm saum will drift 61 inches..

If I was to use the 180gr ELDM's and 190gr A tip bullets it's 5 to 10 inches less than the 184gr hybrids.

Again according to my bal cal a 180gr ELDM's shot 100fps less in my 26 inch barrelled 284 shoots inside 184gr hybrids in my 30 inch 7mm saum..!!

How much does the 139gn Scenar drift when launched at 3400fps (6.5WSM)?

  10. Well, I agree with about 800 rounds from a 7mmWSM for F Class shooting but for benchrest you can drop that to about 450.

308?  I couldn't believe my first FTR barrel was goosed after 1100 rounds - I'll not be using Vit N540 again.......

  11. When I started shooting in 1984 I bought a secondhand Rockchucker for £30.  I eventually added a Hornady progressive for pistol rounds.

I was happy with the Rockchucker until a few months ago when a guy joined Diggle and mentioned that he was waiting for his MEC Marksman press to arrive from America.  MEC?  - never heard of it but a quick Google and a few You Tube videos later I decided it was time for a new press.

I presumed i would have to order from the States but no - Hull Clay and Game are the UK importers!  It's a fine press, I really like it - and I got £75 for the Rockchucker

    Hi Vince,

It is indeed the IBS 1000 yard target, unfortunately it was shot in Texas on a friends farm, clay shooters who wanted to shoot rifles - when they realised they had a 1 mile straight wayleave with running thru' it!

So I pointed them at 6.5 Creeds (Tic Tac & RPR's) and Vortex's (now March's after they looked thru' and used mine) and the 1000 yard IBS targets as best bet for paper targets to shoot at - so a convoluted way of saying 'sorry' cannot help you ☹️

    Brgds Terry

Well thanks for clearing it up - I thought there would be a story behind it.  Fortunately, electronic targets have done away with the need for paper for 1000 yd BR in the UK - we just use a simple aiming mark but we still have the IBS target face on our iPads.

    Good looking rifle Brock, LH?

Re. the 6.5x55, always liked the cartridge and had a couple of rifles in the past for stalking, always got the job done, very consistent & considering its about a 120 year old design not too shabby, think  P O Ackley said something along the lines of 'not worth Acklying as no great gains?

But even using Skan data cannot see the advantage of the 55 over say a Creed (or 47 in real terms for that matter  ). The general trend has been towards smaller capacity cases for better accuracy e.g. PPC, 6mmBR  and when the switch to 308 for TR the folks who had the option to remaining with 30-06 during the change over opted for the 308 ( caveat: from memory on that last one)

Plenty of nice rifles out there, things like the Tikka in its various forms, Sauer 100 Pantera all seem to shoot out of the boxe, which does question the custom route (but custom is nice ! )

Here is a 285 yard group from a stock Tikka Tac using factory ammo:

    Choice is your's really.

Terry - your target intrigues me. If I'm not mistaken it's an IBS 1000 yard benchrest target.  I have one myself which I brought back from Hawks Ridge 1000 yd BR Range in North Carolina in 2004 - intending to get some printed for the UKBRA - where did you get yours - if you don't mind me asking?
