The HSE et-al present a comprehensive study with a great deal of data gathered (there are still a great deal of assumption & guesstimates).

I think I now understand better why BASC have opted for a lead-free future for shotguns.  I do not agree or disagree with their position - I don't have the counter-data to consider options.

For my particular sport (target shooting) it looks like it may come down to range management processes to achieve derogation from an outright lead ban.  The NRA will have to take point for this.  Interestingly military ranges are not considered in the report scope - I wonder how that may play out for civi users?

Hopefully (selfishly) I hope it takes a few years to get around to implementing and technologies have moved forward to help overcome the problem of lead.

It's definitely coming down the road, serious alternatives need to be worked.

  2. You report a MV variation of 143 fps yet a 'very small bug hole'.   I'd say you have a pretty solid node.

You need more data but if further results match the first, not much to worry about beyond a fine tune of seating depth.

  3. as above, a sound recommendation.  I'd add:

Consider whether you need a magazine, if so, can you single feed?  This allows greater scope to tune your ammunition  - I assume you will hand-load as it's highly unlikely any rifle is 'deadly accurate' with factory ammo (save barrel tuning exotics etc).

I have a 6.5CM that's basically an F Open rifle,  given the weight and 30" barrel I couldn't imagine that being used for PRS but for +1000yds it's like cheating it's so precise.  Truly great performance means less compromises in whatever field.

By the end of the summer I hope to purchase a 6.5 creedmoor. I want something that’s deadly accurate and reliable. I like the tactical look, and I’m approaching it with “buy once cry once” I’m hoping that people could point me in the right direction. I really like the AT-X from accuracy international, and to be honest this is the rifle that I’m swaying towards. However there’s also the daniel defense, or maybe something like a custom made Howa or similar. By such great gun smiths like Valkyrie or Kershaw just too name a few.
what would your money be going towards? Which would produce the best results?

    what's your intended use ?

  5. The fired brass will have sprung back a small amount so the actual clearance between the outside of the neck and the chamber will be greater than 1 thou on diameter.

Is it Lapua brass ?  Generally it's very consistent, I have tried a light skim with a neck turner but it made no difference to performance or chambering.

As above, keep on top of cleaning both the brass and the chamber and all should be well.

What a very fine chap your friend must be :) Big Zeds are the finest machine ever created :) I have as many Classic Kawasakis as rifles :) They are a far better investment. Second hand rifles don't tend to be worth a light, but the price of Z900s seems to go up daily  🤣Naturally the price will plummet should I ever need to sell one 😄

Indeed, the 1970's Z900 is the prettiest bike ever apart from my 1984 Laverda Corsa RGS1000 - sadly sold many moons ago,  a replacement would be £20k at least.  Needless to say I didn't sell it for that or even close to that!

Custom rifles come a close second to a good bike

I had a nasty feeling that I had been caught and there was no going back.

I assumed, naively perhaps, that if the goods had defects that the seller would be responsible for highlighting them, as with ebay.

Roy - As for the costs of carriage, as the owner of an on-line shop I buy and sell goods delivered by courier all the time and to charge £20 on top of the profit made from the sale, is very much extracting the urine. If I charged twenty pounds plus Richi's twenty percent I would not still be going ten years on with nothing but positive feedback (www.bikerstoolbox.co.uk). With the constant increase in the costs of carriage we have to accept that some of the profit we make on a sale has to be earned by packaging the products if we are to remain competitive. We re-use as much of the packaging that comes in to us as we are able to. The box the scope came in was very obviously recycled and wasn't great quality in the first place and was roughly bound up with budget 2" parcel tape. Yes there is a difference and we use the premium quality stuff. It also took them a week before sending it out. I wasn't best pleased about the time considering I was paying top dollar for carriage about the time, but when the product is all sticky and has a defect I was pretty hacked off.

I have never bought anything from this type of auction before, so maybe I was expecting too much in the way of customer service.

I will chalk it down to experience I suppose

Never mind Ralph, at least I now know your website exists, my mate needs some old Z bits and bobs and I may buy some bits from you - karma 😁

A chap at Monmouth got an absolute bargain at an auction for a S & B scope so I had a look at Holts as I could do with a spotting scope for my my LE .303. I put a bid of £40 on one that was 20-60 x 60 and won it happy daze ?

They emailed me to say I had won it and wanted £20 + VAT to post it to me + myriad other costs bring the £40 to £76 FFS!

I remonstrated that £20 + VAT was taking the piss and they very generously dropped it to a mere £15 + 20%. I explained that I have an online shop and send stuff out on a next day service with DPD for £7.99 +VAT.

After a good week a very dishevelled looking box arrived via Parcel Farce and I removed the contents. The scope has something nasty inside that is partially obscuring the view at lower magnification that moves around and the zoom control doesn't feel right. The brand is Adventuridge which is clearly not a top brand. It seems clear enough at 100 or thereabouts, but isn't very clear at all at objects further away and I'm not convinced I'll be able to see the rosettes and 600 metres at Warminster IR2 on Saturday. I've never bought anything at this type of auction before so have no idea if I have any comeback for the defects.

Anyone have any idea how much I need to part with for a spotting scope suitable for up to 600metres? I am more than slightly dicky mint currently so am on a shoe string budget :(

Oh well, write it of as a school day

Gentelmen, how do you prep cases for a prolonged storage? I bought a lot of once fired brass that will last me for years, should I just tumble and dry or would you use any lube/chemicals to prevent oxidation? TIA!

    Michal

Clean and dry.  Keep in an air tight bag/container and there shouldn't be any long-term storage problem.  I'd avoid handling the cleaned brass with bare hands to avoid acidic skin sweat/grease.  There will be some slight darkening of the brass over time but that's not an issue.

No one can prove if a run-in/break-in procedure will make it last longer, clean easier or even shoot better. One barrel maker in the states I spoke to said, "shoot it until your finger bleeds then shoot some more and put it away".

What will make it shoot worse is lying on the firing point wondering if you did the correct break-in procedure or not when you should be wondering about the marksmanship principles.

In other words do what you think is right, whatever that is.

a hearty plus one to that

Just passing on info from the manual for the poster to do with what he wants. Personally I got so excited at my first shoot with the rifle that I just had a great day then cleaned it. Ppu ammo was crap tho . Cheers

No implied criticism of your post at all, I was just expressing a personal view of the value of such advice (from AI).

I could be persuaded that the throat may need special attention in early life as reamer marks may be responsible for some copper deposits.  The cleaning regime needs to remove copper.

Just clean the rifle thoroughly is my belief, get the copper out of the throat area- no matter what the age of the barrel.  Copper removing products work well when given time to act.  The occasional bore polish puts the cherry on the cake.

Of course, some barrel manufacturers suggest getting all copper out is a waste of time and detrimental to accuracy - requiring fouling shots to be made prior to scoring shots.

We get to choose from conflicting advice...

    From accuracy international manual image.thumb.jpg.1fb546157b019fd7ae3d384775299c34.jpg

So what ?  Maybe they pander to ill informed customers ?   "If the user wishes...  we would suggest...."  Hardly a ringing endorsement of a "necessary" process.

Other well regarded barrel manufacturers state clearly that it's an unnecessary activity at best and a waste of barrel life.

  13. I only have top quality barrels.  Barrel break-in procedure ?  Never done it, never will.  Never found a problem.

Of course you will get views from all directions, some purporting to have metallurgical powers, some claiming magical powers, some skeptics like me.  It will very much come down to your choice,  it's one of shooting's abiding contentious issues.

Thanks. That sounds promising.   I don't have lots of experience, as you can see, so other views are quite reassuring.

I shouldn't have tried to see what contact the powder makes with the bullet and trusted the manual.

Curiosity is a good thing when tempered with judgement.  Powder does settle, try tapping the case and you may find the powder level drops.

  15. Your COAL is longer by a few thou' than the suggested COAL listed by Viht for a similar bullet, I would say you're going to be ok using the powder charge as recommended.

When I used 77gr Scenar in .223, I loaded 23.5gr N140 and it crunched on bullet seating.
