Hi,  I have loaded 69gr tmk with 22gr N140 and after measuring (i previously had cut a slot plus drilled a hole in brass to check) the brass looks full, so am concerned I would compress powder if I loaded more powder.

Maybe if I loaded to ogive and be over coal, I would have more space and hence could load more powder, so, do I follow the manual and stop at 22gr or ?

Fingers crossed I over thinking this, and as you see I need a hand.  Thanks.

The Viht load data for SMK 69gr (I don't have TMK data to hand) indicates 25.9gr N140 max.  I'm very surprised that 22gr is filling the case.

    What's your loaded COAL ?

    Hi there

I find at high mag even on the p4 f on small targets the ret can cover quite a bit of the target, so with a centre dot with dots around it makes for easy placement on the target . Just my experience of eskdalemuir and local club shooting targets with a 40 mm v bull that’s usually black , so black ret on black target can be hard work .this is the old ret look up the new one on t web. This has some handy measure ing marks too 37401598-D52A-41DF-AF24-55FDEE0EC15A.thumb.jpeg.f26f50f07e2bb7ea933e640db363eb25.jpeg

OK, I also use P4F reticule but I've never had that problem, I'll give it a go and see if it's any additional help.

  3. I use 5-25 x56 FFP P4F on a .338LM up to 2000m without a problem.  I prefer a middling magnification as the wider field of view allows me to spot fall of shot that's off target and to measure the error directly from the reticule.

My sight picture at the mile is perfect for my needs, I can see splash marks on the 1 moa centre at Eskdalemuir without a problem.  To be honest, my Vortex Razor spotting scope on x60 is an inferior picture at + mile distances.

I have a NF comp with a 55x max magnification and the haze and any mirage makes it practically useless at +1000 with full magnification.

All the MME bullets we've tried work very well: there is an example group of .338 Lapua we shot displayed on the MME web site. Peter, who makes them, is very helpful and can tweak them according to your needs in most cases. The Wimbledon Match and Chilcotin bullets are excellent value and our 'go to' bullets for every day use. The tipped bullets are superb for long range.

Have you tried the .338 300gr at a mile ?  I use 285 ELD-M with some success and I thought I may try the A-Tip but MME could be a home-grown alternative

Just wondering about the above rifle scopes I have been looking at them for a while and wondered if anyone uses or has any knowledge of this brand they come with ten  year warranty so that’s a good start but what would they be like with n/v add on I currently have a sightron stac any thoughts.

I have a Delta Stryker ED and it's excellent for target shooting;  excellent tracking, crystal clear glass, good reticule.  Compares favourably with my Nightforce Competition.  I have no experience of using in low light or with n/v.

It trickles OK in my targetmaster though I agree tweezers are good. I also ended up buying an Area 419 mega funnel which is not 100% but much better than a standard one.

I made a stainless steel funnel from a £3:50 Amazon cooking funnel and a bit of turned brass,  works a treat.

    Its here 🙂

    DSCF1735.JPG

very nice, same chassis and action as my .338LM only I have a Truflite 32" tube.

I use N570, it is impossible to trickle so I use a small scoop (.22lr case trimmed down) to dump into the scale pan, works well.  Then there's tweezers for fine adjustment 😉

  8. General torque settings:

M4 high tensile screws into steel,  25 inch pounds is about correct.

M5 high tensile screws into steel, 35 inch pounds is about right.

In both cases the threads should be clean and dry with Loctite.  Don't over lubricate as it's likely to overstretch the fastener.

Am I right to assume you're talking about the screws that clamp the rail down onto the action?  If so, what do Tikka recommend ?

Muzzel Energy calculation is easy and does not require any specific SQEP, you just need a bullet weight and the velocity.

For all other issues associated with the testing of ammunition, and particularly Home Loaded Ammunition the NRA are not SQEP.

Exceeding HME Limits for the Range does not mean the ammunition is not safe and is potentially going to cause a catastrophic firearm failure.

Agreed but exceeding HME limits is an 'offence' unless HME zeroing process is done so could result in sanctions.

There are two issues here;  safety of the round in the chamber and the energy of the bullet leaving the muzzle.

Not sure re missing or gaps in lube for smokeless ( which I’m assuming you are using with shop bought hard cast bullets) but if using with BP then full lube grooves are a must to stop the base of the bullet deforming.

    I didn't know that - very interesting.

The NRA are not SQEP to make any assessments about Hand Loaded Ammunition.

IMHO I'm not sure that's the case and it is rather moot if the rules at Bisley are such as they appear to be.

It doesn't take letters after the name to calculate if a tested round exceeds energy due to velocity and projectile mass

  12. I was a little concerned that the NRA survey asked a yes/no question  "do you assemble to CIP/SAAMI specifications?" and the answer to that could be interpreted wrongly if not qualified by why not.  I load longer than the COAL spec so the truthful answer is "no"  but I never exceed velocity/energy, pressures or headspace so its a potentially misleading answer.

I intend to follow up with the NRA.
