  1. I’m hoping that someone on here will have a definitive answer to this query because I can’t get a reply from Landmarc or anyone from the DIO.

I am helping organise the Birmingham Bisley competition at Kingsbury and one of the potential F Class competitors is an 11 year old. Her father has already entered the competition.

The 11 year old is a full member of a HO approved club and holds a current SSC. The NRA say it’s ok according to their rules (the competition is sponsored by the NRA).

What are the rules concerning under 14 year old shooters at Kingsbury (14 being the youngest age for possessing a Firearm Certificate).

Incidentally, the shooter in question is known by many of the F Class competitors.

  2. In my experience and in practice I’ve not found it to make any difference up to 1000 yards.

I had a batch of bullets that corrosion on the tips so I dry tumbled them. These came out a dull finish compared to the usual shiny. The POI was no different to the shiny batch.

  3. The problem that I see with the lack of transparency of club shoot dates is it makes it difficult for new shooters (and I include those wishing take up the sport as well as those with shines new FACs) and experienced shooters belonging to a different club to find out when they can tag along with a view to joining that club.

I am guessing that not many club officials appreciate cold calls about this.

  4. It sounds like the cases are not expanding and gripping the chamber wall quickly enough, so they are pushed back against the bolt face as the powder ignites. From my own experience this gives similar symptoms to over pressure signs.

2750 fps is modest for the 139 Scenars, especially as some push them successfully at +2900 fps.

My own CM likes 142 gr SMKs at 2850.

I suggest increasing the charge weight and you’ll find those pressure signs disappear.

I'm already a member of ODRC, it's Frome & District Pistol Club I want to join to get more opportunities to shoot.

All the clubs I have ever spoken to suggest that they are legally bound to have a probationary period for all new members, even those who are members of other clubs. I have to say that it sounds strange, but then again the rules surrounding FACs are pretty odd at the best of times. From a clubs perspective I guess it makes sense to ensure that a joining member is going to fit in and not upset other members.

Unfortunately, even that doesn’t guarantee anything. We had a probationary member  who ticked all the boxes. But as soon as he became a full member he became a real pain. I won’t go into details but he didn’t keep full membership very long.

  6. Bedding is easy, so they say, and all the videos make it look easy. However, get it wrong and you either start all over again or get someone like Dave (Baldie) to do it properly.

When you consider the over cost of shooting, especially the horrendous hike in bullet prices, getting a good bedding job done properly first time is cheap in comparison.

  7. As Furrybean, Roy W and Justin say, the Dorset Riflemen is a club where the shooting standard is very high. The downside is, although I like to think we are a friendly bunch, there isn’t a lot of time to bring on new members with little experience because our main club day is always an F Class competition, and we are predominantly an F Class club.

We do have a practice day once a month and they alternate between Bisley and a 100 yard range near Lulworth.

I don’t meant to put you off but to start long range I suggest your best bet is to join one or more smaller clubs who are more geared up to introducing someone to long range shooting ( up to 1000 yards) and if that hooks you in enrol in the GBFCA course or one of those mentioned by Furrybean.

Then you’ll be ready for the Dorset’s.

Otherwise, there are two Oxford based clubs, Ridgeway and Harwell. If they take your fancy and you can’t find contacts by Google I can point you at their secretarys.

doesn't the sodium bicarb just react with the citric acid ?  I just put a level teaspoon in my ultrasonic cleaner (about 2ltr) with some detergent and the cases come out sparkly clean.  Rinse in plenty of cold water and dry.

To the OP;  rose gold implies a removal of zinc from the brass surface leaving a microscopic copper sheen.  From what you describe I wouldn't worry, it's only a surface effect.

As Pops says. The usual process is to rinse with bicarbonate after cleaning to neutralise the citric acid.

Hi everyone I’m looking for some advice on joining the ODRC.

I’ve emailed about joining and had a response but need a signature from a full member. Being new to long range shooting I don’t know anyone that does it and therefore don’t know any members.

any advice on how I can meet any current members and get the signature I need?

    thanks in advance

    James

Is there a specific reason you want to join ODRC?

As mentioned by others there are other clubs to choose from and some smaller ones make it easy for new members. Ridgeway Firearms Club, one that was Secretary of until lack of time meant I had to pass on the banner, is based in Oxford and has access to ranges close to you. They also have regular monthly shoots at Bisley.

No, it isn't.  The JSP907's (booking forms) are put to the DIO Training Manager (Maj. Jim Salisbury at Swynnerton) and he makes the decision regarding who gets allocated what and where.  Landmarc follow simple contract rules and operate to Range Standing Orders (again, written by DIO).

Landmarc are the wrong target guys.

Thanks Pops. I know that. Who’s controlling what is a matter of semantics. My point is the loss of revenue when shoots are cancelled or, going back to my other point, when clubs decide to use other shooing locations.

Clearly the DIO don’t know how to operate a superb business asset.

What has it to do with NRA?  It's the MOD that ultimately controls access via DIO.  Landmarc are just a facilities contractor - they do as they're told to.

It's not Landmarc's revenue - it's Defence Infrastructure Organisation (DIO), a Governmental agency.

I know that Pops, but it’s still loss of revenue and it’s Landmarc controlling it.

Couldn't agree more.  I've let my membership of ODRC go as I have a 300/500yd alternative and I shoot long range at Eskdalemuir.  I enjoyed Kingsbury but the increased buggeration isn't worth the effort and I don't go to other ODRC booked ranges.

I used to book military ranges for a club, dealt with Swynnerton  - with the exception of the admin (Deb & Marg) the whole shower seem dedicated to being a pain in the butt

The cost of Kingsbury isn’t cheap. In fact my club is considering booking Bisley instead. This is a shame because I like Kingsbury. But it could be the thin end if the wedge and Landmarc will lose a considerable amount of revenue .

  13. A couple of years ago we (our club) all too often found ourselves in a self cancellation situation. I would drive 55 miles to the range only to find that a group of cadets were going to shoot 100 yards on B range all day. This leaves a stark choice as to shoot or not.

Kingsbury rules state that no one can shoot at one distance while another is being used, unlike Bisley where the current ruling is you can have the three different distances being use with eight targets separating them.

Landmarc are poor at giving adverse notice. I don’t think they care.

  14. Here’s a question for the gunsmiths on here.

If a barrel is set back completely, that is the whole tenon cut off and the barrel re-chambered, will the barrel life still be the same or is it likely to be longer? Assume bullets not pushed at light speed.

My previous experience of barrels going south is through throat erosion or fire cracking at tge start of the rifling, so weird logic says re-chamber should extend the barrel life.
