Kerry Sika stag

Recommended Posts

Just received my Sika stag shoulder mount from our taxidermist.

I'm really happy, as it turned out perfect in every detail.

I shot this stag last September on the west coast in Co. Kerry.

The stag was in the begining of the rut and in beautifull condition, before the 165sst....

Generally the Kerry sika are apparently from a different sub-species

and are mostly lighter than sika from other areas. Some say the Kerry Sika are

the purest form. I don't know.

Congratulations! That is a fine looking stag. My missus says that I'm not even allowed to have a skull mount in the flat or on the balcony let alone a fine example like this. Still it hasn't been an issue yet as my first deer has yet to fall  ATB Toby

Very chuffed, it turned out better than expected.

Kurt Ecker is our taxidermist, an Austrian who lives since ages in Kerry.

Price was very good, I thought. A nice bit under 400 Euro.

I didn't push Kurt, animal shot last september. He could have done it earlier.

Although he is getting fairly busy lately.

Toby my wife also swore she didn't want any mounted animal in the house.

She changed her mind quickly when she saw this one. Now it's in the

middle of the living room. Looks so alive and elegant.

Very nice Edi.

That one looks the part where as sometimes the eyes or whatever don't quite look right. Obviously Kurts the man for the job.

Thanks for the replies.

We observed this stag for a while before the shot. He

was mighty aggresive and thrashing about. One new straight away

that this was a good one. Took him from a steady prone position

at 180yds , he dropped on the spot.

A week later we took another two 6 pointers out of that place and

one of them had a bad front leg injury. The place needed a bit

of thinning out.

  • 4 weeks later...

The beez neez Edi. A very nice mount indeed.

One of my patients is an excellent taxidermist but the wait is at least 15 months for him to do a job. A not uncommon story from what guys tell me of the better ones. Mind you, a bit of a wait pales into insignificance compared to a crap job.

sika98,

were you along in Hungary? Must have been a fun trip.

I might join in for a trip in autumn, maybe for driven boar.

Kurt was delighted with his piggy, shot with a 6.5. He'll get a bigger one,

he is a very patient man.

Chris,

your damn patients never listen anyway... ;)

Dwight,

we shot this stag a bit away from the road, most good heads get

lost to drive by shooters and lampers. Normally I wouldn't bother with

large stags but in this case I was told to take him. Stags in the rut can

be almost too easy prey. I always enjoy the opening of the doe season.

Country wise and scenery, Kerry is some lovely place. We might

stumble accros each other at some stage.

Nice pic Sika 98, thanks.

Thanks Sauer,

I was never really interested in getting an animal mounted and

never had a closer look at levels of workmanship. I know Kurt for a while now

and we often talk about the techniques he uses. Of course I trusted him

with the job.
