How easy is it to work on a CZ550 Action?

Recommended Posts

Hey guys. In my search for a .300WM I've found a nice CZ550 Magnum Safari. It looks tidy and will I'm sure shoot fine for me but in time (money allowing) I'd like to get it fitted with a nice custom stock and heavy barrel.

When I was having my Hornet screwcut by Mike Norris he told me the name of a fairly good custom gun maker who uses CZ actions. I csn't remember what it was but I assume that means that these custom parts are available for it? I don't want a Remmy like everyone else. I like CZ actions and rate their basic rifles more highly!

I'm sure you could probably get what you want done somewhere but, is it really worth it?

The rifle will cost you £500-£700, stock £350-£550 depending and then a barrel job £500-£650 and then if you're going to have all that done you would want it bedding at £150-£200.

For what you would end up spending you could pick up a S/H TRG?

I know the lure of a big calibre on your ticket can be overwhelming and the urge to go and buy something can be hard to resist but, if it were me I would wait and save the money for something that is already everything you want it to be.

Not trying to pee on your bonfire chap, just my honest opinion.

I think Moses has summed it up very well.

Rigby's used to use the Brno action but it was just a cheap way to get a forging after Mauser stopped making the 98 actions. They re machined the body replaced the majority of the bolt and re machined it and threw the trigger assy in the bin and made their own, fitted a custom Walther barrel and made their own stocks.

You could buy any of the specialist actions that are available and very well made and designed and use one of the good trigger assy's in the medium price bracket, still pick your stock and a say Lothar Walther barrel and the difference in price between that and what your proposing would only be what you would pay for the CZ rifle and what you paid for yout RPA, Surgeon, Barnard etc bolt action, which wouldnt be much I guess, but at the end of it you would have an excellent custom rifle rather than a tarted up Brno worth less than what it had cost you and less satisfaction of ownership.

I have Tikka Stainless 300WM which is very accurate and a joy to shoot and as choice, I wouldnt even give the CZ a look, because I dont need to change anything but the stock for a nicer McMillan or the like as it already is a real tack driver and the trigger is excellent, there will be plenty of similar ones out there for relatively little money.

Have a proper look round and keep your hands firmly in your pocket until you find a real bargain.

Any number of magnum actions could be used Dwight, and every gunsmith will have their favourites. Depends on what you want to spend really. There,s nothing wrong with a blueprinted remmy magnum for a .300 win mag, they are shooters in their standard guise, never mind fettled.

However, if you have a bit extra, then i,m gonna reccomend the surgeon xl.Its a big brute of an action, comes with its own floorplate system [ai mags] uses an m14 extractor . my own .338 is built on one. lawton is our other option for this calibre, and although i havent built a winmag on one, i know there are actions available in several configurations for it.

Rebarrel a std gun ? Plenty of stuff out there, but more than likely to be sporter weight stuff.

If you want a serious 1000 yards gun, it needs a meaty action, a meaty barrel, and a meaty stock.

Pipsqueaks dont shoot well consistantly at 1000 yards plus.

There are other options i,m sure, but those are the ones i,m used to working with, and the ones we sell buddy.

I knew a chap who had a CZ hornet heavily customised by Trevor Proctor.

Thanks for all your replies. Maybe I should just buy the used Sako TRG-S I've spotted on gun trader. They want near £1000 for it though, so is it worth that?

What's it come with? scope? mounts? mod?

If it's just the rifle I would say no it's not worth a grand.

A TRG-S is not a 22 or 42 after all.

Yeh, but it uses the same action in a sporter configuration.

Can only find one TRGS on Guntrader and thats a 25-06 at £695, good buy me reckons.

Yeah, the .300 is gone now. I haven't been looking much recently and hadn't noticed.

I'd love a TRG 42 with a green stock and phosphate barrel, that's pretty much my dream target rifle. Trouble is all the 42s I've seen are .338s.

I also like the AI rifles. That thumbhole stock they do is lovely but I think the gun is just a tad out of my price range, even second hand!

I'd rather have a TRG than a Remmy in an AICS stock, but I would consider one at the right price (cheap!).

What sort of price would I be looking at for a reasonable TRG42?

Sorry buddy i cant help you there, this style of rifle is not my bag so i have no idea of what you should be paying for one.

There are several members who own TRG42's that should log on over the next few days, i am sure they can guide you in the right direction.

For a TRG42 .338LM in good condition expect to pay between £1,300-£1,500 (perfect for a .30 cal wildcat  ). The .300WM are hold their value a bit more around £1,400-1,700 mint condition. However you an get them a bit cheaper if you wait it out.

Njc,

Hold out for what you really want, a TRG42 in 300Win mag will turn up eventually, if you go for anything else it will always feel like second best.

Ian.

I coulndn't agree more.

Wait for what you really want, don't throw good money after bad chasing it.

I have a nearly new synthetic Howa 1500 stainless in 300WSM that requires a re-barrel if you are interested.

Rifle also has a lovely custom wood stock, would make a beautiful stalker in any standard magnum bolt face cartridge.

I was going to replace the barrel and sell it anyway.......was thinking of doing it in 300, or 7mm WSM..

Could you rebarrel that Howa to .300WM or would it have to be WSM? Is the action long enough for a full length cartridge (I assume Howas are made like Tikkas, either long or long?).

I don't think I can justify a TRG!
