6.5x284 suggestions

Recommended Posts

I'll shortly be adding a 6.5x284 to the cabinet and looking for advice on best recipes.

Lapua brass and Barnes 120gn TTSX as a starting point in a 24" barrel. I'm thinking that N160 or one of the reloader swiss powders (RS80 or RS70 maybe?).

Load data seems thin on the ground and the go-to powders in the US seem to be H4350 and H4831 so I'm looking for something available in the UK as a starting point.

Thanks in advance.

You've kinda answered your own question - Vit 165 will give a better case-fill than Vit 160.  The 6.5-284 will hold about 59gn of powder.

Some use Hodgdon H4831SC but load is about 49gn - so lots of space left.

I think my load was 56gn - but please don't just slap that in your 6.5-284.  As always, that load was safe in my rifle etc......

Hi

Was using N165 in mine , tried RS70 as I had a stock left over and wow ! 55 gn 140 AMAX 3150 fps single hole groups in a old 24" LW barrel. The difference was hard to believe. No sign of any pressure in mine.

Always remebering to start low and work up safely

I've always used Vit 165 with a 139/140gn bullet.

Do you see an increase in barrel life by using such a ‘cool’ powder?
