atlanticity
Any advice regarding which load to try first. The choice is 123 grain scenar or 139 grainscenar.Mainly for 1000yard target at Bisley.Should I chase velocity with the 123,s or bc value with 139,s.The rifle is a Dolphin, nesika action and Bartlein 30 inch barrel with a 8.5 twist I think. My gut feeling is 139 what does any one else think and why? Thanks for your replies regards Jonathan
John MH
139 Scenar is a big heavy bullet for a 6.5x47 case
Tuck
The cartridge was deleloped for 120-130g bullets but obviously that doesn't mean you can't use the 139's but Iv always used the 120's in mine with good results.
TJC
You chase BC for known distance shooting to help mitigate wind drift. The higher velocity tends to work better / shoots flatter which is more optimal for UKD shooting as it is more forgiving with vertical dispersion. I shot the 139gr out to 1200 at Bisley a couple of weekends ago. Both will work, choose the one that better suits your application.
gbal
As TJC, let the rifle decide,though Higher BC for serious distance is a general guide-to 300y or se,fps has the edge (extremes excepted of course) Here is some 260 data for SAAMI loads (6.5 x 47 will follow quite closely,but no commecial comparable loads. SAAMI so that pressures etc are known,and standard... drop/drift 10 mph wind 24 inch barrel. Fed120 NosBT@ 2950BC .418 200y 0/3 300y 7.1/7.0 400y 20.8/13 500y 42/21 600 73/32 800y171/63 1000y336/107 Rem120AcTip@2890 BC.48 200 0/2.7 3007.2/6.2 400 21/11.5 500 42/19 60072/28 800 164/54 1000 314/91 Fed 140SGK@2700 BC.415 2000/3.4 300(/8 400 25/15 50052/25 60090/37 800 212/72 1000 417/122 Nos 140Part BC .490 @2800 2000/2.7 300 7.7/6.4 400 22/12 50045/19 600 76/29 800 174/55 1000 332/93 So,reasonably comparable-it's what is available on a level playing field. Effects of both bullet weight and BC can be gleaned.BC clearly reduces wind drift at 1000-as expected. The detailof course is 260 see above-but close Hunting loads don't matter given weight,MV and BC are compared It's close enough anyhow as a guide. Precision is a function of bullet-barrel interaction,and that isn't generalisable. Accuracy adds in shootability (the shooter) but recoil etc won't be much different in thse loads. gbal
atlanticity
Thanks guys for your comments ,l have got the 139,s now so I shall give them a go and see which accuracy nodes develop and at what velocity. Thanks everyone Jonathan
Dorset Winmag
Jonathon, I'm getting good results with both the following loads:- Lapua Scenar 123 with 37.5 grains of RL15 behind giving an avg fps from a 26" Lilja of 2868 Lapua Scenar 139 with 37.8 grains of N550 behind giving an avg fps from the above barrel of 2800 Both are sub 0.5moa at 100m and were chrony'd on a warm day! The rifle is a Barnard 07 built by Mik at Dolphin. Hope that helps! DW
Borisserge
This is something that we have been trying out in 1K bench comps. You should consider trying 142smk. if you can get them to stabilise.... There is approximately just over one minute of wind gained over 139gr scenars at 1k. (This was with a 6moa wind) If you are okay using a double base powder try RL17. There is a big gain in speed over N550. Tbh, a single base powder gets you to 1k without excessively scorching the barrel.a
atlanticity
Hi Guys thanks for your replies.Ive been using n150 the velocities have got to about 2830 fps with 139 gn scenars but the groups were opening up and the extreame spread also increased. The primers also flattend and craterd. The best groups were around 2750 fps with extreame spread of 12 fps so I shall setle for this.Im wary of using those double base powders.I hve yet to shoot this load at 1000yrds but I hope the groups match the 100yrd groups of 0.4 moa,we shall see.Oh yes all loads were just touching the lands and the powder increments were in 0.5 grn intervels.Once I have have got a feel for the rifles performence I shall experiment with changes of charge weights of 0.1 grains to see if I can refine those groups. Thanks for the input and If you have any more insight please let me know regards Jonathan
Brillo
Almost the same as Dorset Winmag except using 39.9 grains of RL17/Elcho17/RS60 (all the same powder) with 139 grain Scenars. This is obviously dependent on your COAL and mine is 2.680".
Berserk
The load I used in a previous 6.5x47 was; 38.9gr N540 123gr Amax 3002fps This was basically at Vihts max load and was about as high pressure as I wanted to go! I will be having another one made later in the year but want to use 140/142gr pills. will update once done.
