anyone used one ?

what are they like as a stalking rifle/calibre.

and are the dies readily available,

as I am selling one of my 20 tac I am thinking of something like a 30 br or a 6x47, I have seen a 30br but not many 6x47 around that I like the look of?

thanks

I have just got one for a benchrest rifle, so cant comment about stalking.

Dies are available from Redding via Spud.

Case forming isnt that bad, either 1 pass on a tapered mandrel or in sequential steps using increasingly sized mandrels.

Cant wait to start shooting mine, the ridiculously long barrel life really appeals to me

Cheers

Yes,a 30BR

I will be firing a 110 or 115gr bullet.

They are very popular with Score shooters, but they did very well at the NBRSA Group Nationals in St.Louis this year.

So i have decided to have a go with one

Yes...or at least the virtually identical 308x11/2 Barnes-the 308w shortened to one and a half inches.

At its best with 125g,flat base for medium range, but could deliver near enough 2000 ft lb,though not in a short barrel...

...mine semi custom,26 inch...shot in the .3s and very pleasant to shoot. Just ran out of puff by 600 yards.

It does at least as well as any 30/30,but with the advantage of spitzer bullets in a bolt action and an excellent roe cartridge.BIg deer.... not one of the best, but neither is any 6mm.

Dies might be specialist-mine are Neil Jones.Custom chambering for the rifle, and a handloading number only,of course.

7BR is in the same family-quite similar, not used it for game shooting.Used to be brass available from Remington-like the 30,nice to shoot. The 6BR is a different proposition for very long range target use,but not so for larger deer-for which the whole BR family are not very good choices at all-that's 308.7-08,6.5-08/260 territory.

The 30BR has enjoyed a real new lease of life as top 300m 'shoot for score' cartridge-it clips score rings more than smaller calibres but is very accurate too.

Accurate Shooter have a 30BR section, fairly up to date on options and dies ,performance etc...

For stalking I see only disadvantages with the 30BR compared to a decent 308 win. Less energy, less likely to feed from the mag, no factory ammo available, more case prep needed, more annoying when you drop a fired case and only a small increase in accuracy potential.

Thank you all so much,

I had a good read about the 30br today andi think it's not for me so it looks like I will possibly try the 6/47 or sorting else, this of course will only happen should I sell my other 20 tactical.

Cheers lads,

6x47L is a great little wildcat. I have been slow to pick up on this round up but since rebarreling my tikka I have loved it.

I'm getting just over 2900fps from a 20" barrel using 105grn bullets. I mostly shoot fallow and vermin with it and it has been great. Less powder, less recoil, more accurate and the same velocity as my old .243.
