bewsh
keep reading about bullet shortages but aside from delays in delivery to distributors I have been quite lucky getting 208/52 amax, 130gr interlocks .270, 180gr corelokt and various other scierra .308. Is there a real shortage and if so is it brand specific?
Laurie
Certain Hornady A-Max bullets have been in very short supply for a long time, the 75gn .224, 123gn 6.5 and 162gn 7mm in particular. The 162 was one of scores of product lines which Hornady suspended for ~18 months whilst US demand was at its peak and although it has now been reinstated will take a long time for supply to catch up with demand. The 123gn 6.5 is a relatively new design and with the runaway success of the 6.5mm Hornady Creedmoor in the US alongside ever growing interest in the 260 and '47L has been permanently on back-order on both sides of the Atlantic. Sierra's UK importers (Henry Krank and Norman Clark) are lucky to get 50% of any individual order satisfied and again certain popular calibres suffer most, the relatively new 6.5mm 123gn SMK selling out quickly here every time the importers get any. Most popular Berger Target models are on permanent back-order and have been for at least three years. A consignment arrives and is sold out almost immediately - more often than not is fully committed to back-orders before it arrives. Talking to Mik Mak at Dolphin re a huge shipment he received earlier this year, every box other than 90gn 0.224" VLDs was already sold. (This is to shooters as Dolphin isn't a Berger trade importer.) Hannams Reloading has what equates to five or six full pallets' worth of Bergers outstanding on existing orders some individual elements going back two to three years. Inevitably, both dealers and individual shooters sometimes cancel when the importer finally gets a consignment so this throws an element onto the general uncommitted market. It also creates a huge workload spike for the importers - each time a shipment arrives every back-order customer has to be contacted by phone to check the order is still 'live' and then there is one to two weeks of solid parcelling up and consigning via carriers. Many models were temporarily withdrawn during the 'crisis'. The 6mm 107gn Sierra MK one of many such. Production (500 ct boxes only) resumed earlier this year, but there is a huge US backlog to be met before we start to see them. Some of the less popular designs have long since been sold out and there have to be doubts as to whether they'll reappear now.
