Grouse
With the absence of H4350 powder availability, I was wandering if anyone has tried N150 pushing 140gr Amax? Ran N160 and N150 through quickload and looks like N150 is a better powder than N160, velocity wise in a 24" barrel? Tried N150 last night and looks promising - little carbon deposits and sweeter shooting than Hodgdon powders - always been a viht fan for these reasons. Incisor
Hi I'm running N150 in my 6.5x47 with a 24 inch tru flite using the 123 A max and 37.8 getting around 2875. With the 120 A max 38.2 o N150. Regards Grouse Interesting Lapua state the N160 gives better velocity, they probably use a longer barrel plus it isn't that much faster. http://www.lapua.com/en/products/reloading/vihtavuori-reloading-data/relodata/5/55 When I switch to 260 I was going to use Varget and N160 just in case of shortages with either product. John MH
N160 works well for me in the .260.
Jagged 77
N160 has the better burn rate for .260 And is more suited - I had a play around with N150 but it came up to pressure quickly without delivering the velocities required.
Grouse
Interesting that you recommend/favour N160 over N150. My initial thoughts were that N160 would be better too, however after running it through QL N150 seems to produce more favourable results? I do have both Viht powders and will test both, why do you favour N160 best? Cheers Grouse
tackb
Mine loves 46g N560 for 2850fps , it's hot so work up blah blah , lapua brass and 140 Amax with federal gm primers
Jagged 77
Try them for yourself, your rifle might prefer it, I don't for reasons stated above. I get the velocity, accuracy and consistency out of N160 I need for LR shooting. I think it is an excellent alternative to H4350 which is the widely regarded as the go to powder. The sweet spot load for N160 with 140 grain bullets is very similar to H4350.
Grouse
Thanks for the input, much appretiated. Out of interest what length barrel do you run Jagged?
jcampbellsmith
With the absence of H4350 powder availability, I was wandering if anyone has tried N150 pushing 140gr Amax? No, I have been using N165 for some years to gently push the 140 gr A-Max along. I am sitting down to load a trial of N160 with 123 gr A-Max this evening. I may in due course try the N160 with the 140 A-Max. Regards JCS
DaveT
If it helps I use 42.0g of N550 with 123g Scenars to get 2950 fps out of a 30 inch barrel. Also use n560 at 44.5g with 139g scenars ....gets 2800 or so from 28 incher. Both loads V. accurate
