Ronin
I saw this on a US "precision shooting" forum. Hopefully moving on from the debate on "what makers product is best" and the pissing contest that usually develops. It seems that the "Big Green" is making steps forwards by offering rifles in MAc A series and AICS stocks and on the 40X action No idea of cost - but i'll bet that they would be guaranteed out of the box shooters. I wonder if Edgar Brothers would bring any in on request? I know there were a few Rem 700's made with 5r barrels a couple of years ago as standard - anyone seen them here? Oh, the link to the PDF file: http://www.remingtonle.com/pdf/08LE_Firearms.pdf
Guest 308Panther
The 5R's dont hang around long. The shop I was plannin on using when it came time only gets in limited numbers either once a year or a couple times a year. Nice to see the .338LM in there,Hopefully the price isnt too far out of wack.Even tho the ammo is. Ronin.... If ya feel your ears burnin... It would be because I see at least two in there that just got added to the wish list. The problem is..... My gun cabinet is full......I need a bigger one. 308Panther

Andrew
I will be surprised if they actually guarantee accuracy. I have set back and rechambered a number of post 1985 40X guns because they wouldn't shoot. After finding a few 700 actions with the barrels epoxied into the receiver, and the threads on those barrels undersized and looking like they were cut by a blind man with a chisel, I have sworn off The Big Green. You guys can have as many of them as you can get, with my blessings! ~Andrew
Vermincinerator
I reckon you would have more chance of collecting a bucket of rocking horse $hit then Edgars importing anything special It annoys me that as Remingtons agent they do not supply the whole range, let alone anything special or calibres that differ from the usual Ian. baldie
We got a 40x in for a customer, from the remmy custom shop......it took 12 months But when it finally did come, it was very nice and shot beautifully.
Andrew
Some do, but many are just average. There was a time when a 40X could go from the box to the bench and win BR matches. Maybe Remington will tighten their standards. ~Andrew
Ronin
Andrew from what I have seen of all manufacturers quality control recently, they all seem to value profit over customer satisfaction. You most certainly get what you pay for in this life.
Andrew
Some of the older gun makers here are running into problems with their ancient machinery. Much of it is 100+ years old and in some cases, literally held together by baling wire. A friend of my brothers was a production manager at Colt Firearms and said that they were constantly having to shim work machine surfaces and strap-iron patch cracked castings on their machine tools. I'm sure Remington has run into similar problems with some of their machines. In this age of CNC machining (the era that bumped me from my tool and die making job years ago) you'd think that tolerances and QC in general would improve - least in the more modern plants. CNC machinery is expensive and retooling likewise. I doubt if you'll see it at Remington soon. A similar problem faces Remington and Winchester's rimfire ammo production. The machines are old. It is a small secret that for a few years Winchester has been looking for out-of-country sources for their rimfire line. ~Andrew
Guest 308Panther
Andrew, I have seen a magazine(Guns Oct 2007) write up on a Winchester .22LR import. Its Russian made. It is the New Wildcat. 308Panther
Andrew
I'm not surprised! Winchester has been trying to off load their lagging rim fire line for 5 years that I know of. Not to mention the fact that their latest .22LR rifle is made in Russia. ~Andrew
Guest 308Panther
I have seen a remarkable improvement on the pics of the Russian Win from the mag to the website. If one were to use the mags pics as a base, there would be no question of choosing Big Green over Red W. Ian, Edgars sounds an awful lot like a retailer over here called Gander Mountain. Big retail chain, handles most anything you can think of for Camping,Fishing,Hunting. But when it comes to buying a rifle from them things get really irratating. They only order in calibers they think they will sell out of. .22LR, .270, .30-06, mainly. They dont do special orders. And they wont order outside those calibers. They will stock an almost full ammo range tho. 308Panther
Vermincinerator
Pat, A few years ago i wanted a 700 VLS in 6mmRem and when i approached the importer i was told no-one wants that calibre, i said i do, they said everyone wants 243s, i said i dont i want a 6mm They would not budge. Asked him how much? "Oh,I dont know...I picked it used, rarley shoot it now." Thats were we left it...I dont know if he still has it or not.Mighta gave it to one of his Grandkids. Figured on pickin it up for Angel... A .308 is just too hard on her. I get back to work and I am pickin that up if he still has it.
