An interesting position...

hi there chaps,

for a long while now, having had discussions with friends who hunt deer size (and larger) animals, the issue of the correct calibre would come up. Everyone has their opinions and their views, based either on experience and, often, on hearsay. In this piece (which was first posted on a link on another forum)

I've read the most reasonable essay on what makes a calibre effective,

what do you think?

best wishes,

It works. Apparently .270 is Lion medicine enough for any man (and a free nomination to a Darwin Award to boot).

Aside from that gem it's a common sense article. Nice to see the 300h&h get a mention.

Link works for me.

An interesting article and agree with the .270 comment earlier. He does however make the point that if you can't shoot then it don't matter what you can afford or what are using your gonna struggle.

Or put another way, just cos you got a pencil it don't make you an artist!

well, my take on it is that we many times spend a lot of time thinking which gadget/calibre/newfangled idea will make us better shots, when the answer (according to that guy anyway) is to know our gun and worry about how well we know to handle it and the rest is not half as important. I like the first couple of sentences that open the piece...

PS: and I don't like the 270, liked though what he had to say about the 6.5x55 and the 7x57!

My work's machine will not access the links -will try from home.

I'm completly with the 'know your rifle' (or as some folks say 'learnt to p*ss with the dick you've got!' :) )

I shoot a 6.5x55 for deer, the reason being I was shooting a 94 Swede in vintage and I had the dies/brass so I went with this round.

Agree re. the 270. the first stalking rifle I had was a 270 as I read the magazines at the time (was a loooong time ago). Unplesant, overated. Now I'm not bothered if I do not have the latest 'WSMULTRASAUM', more interested in 'does it shoot' or if I'm honest 'can I shoot'

Terry,

Yup, I go along with that reasoning.

My pet theory about the 270 having such a peculiarly strong reputation relates to recoil.

I think the 270 has a particularly sharp and abrupt recoil.

In the days before chronos, people took recoil as an indicator of 'power' - it was the only feedback they had.

And therefore 'sharp recoil' was taken and held to mean that it was a pokey round...and the perception endures.

As regards magnumitis; agree too. Rather like the maxim 'you can't miss fast emough to win a firefight'

you can't put enough energy into a miss to have a target effect.

I stalked with a 300wm and 308 for a couple of years. I have to say, that beyond 100m I could discern absolutely

no difference to an animal's reaction to the shot. Not surprising because, at the end of the day, it was being hit by the same bullet! (below 100m I did notice a difference in cavitation-related wounding - not useful).
