I Just recently purchased a Tikka CTR 24" 8 twist .223 for this very task, unfortunately i can't use it, i haven't even thought about what to run through it, so if anybody has any ideas on a good place to start for a varminting load please enlighten me.

    i have in stock already

    40 gr Vmax

    50 gr Vmax

i am undecided what i should get in the 60 - 80 gr range any suggestions ?

    Powder wise i have

    N120

    N135

    N140

    N160

    RS52

i see no problems with Varminting stories, that's why i joined this Sight, i thought the clue was in the name, however it does seem to be more target shooting than varminting, which is a shame,

my take on it is, if you don't like it , don't read it scroll on by, luckily we are not all the same.

i have received good info and help on here in the past from VarmLR we both run a Tac a1 and he helped with developing a decent load with 139 scenars.

    anyway that's me.

    Hi Kev

I have the same rifle and I know you wont be disappointed. Mine likes either 50gr v max or sierra 50gr blitz king with H4895 which I have just used my last and there is no more. Trying to find a load with N133 with similar results now.

+1 for more on varminting with .223 or 20 cal or dare I say .17HMR. These are the cals I use.

I’m not really a fan of the Quad although it is a very capable rifle in HMR my mate has one with NV permanently mounted on it...

the Finnfire is another step up though, the stock is much slicker for not being so ‘ambidextrous’  and isn’t trying to be all things to all men.... It’s a different rifle to the Quad and IMHO better for it....

try and find one to play with...

I think only the Finnfire 2 is available in .17hmr and not original finnfire, but I might be wrong, (someone on here will know). Anyway if that is so then probably more unpopular option than quad by all accounts. Really only a quad without barrel switch feature so not sure its a step up? Nothing wrong with Quad anyway; or most of the .17hmr rifle options. Most issues have been with ammo if at all. Like any its finding one that shoots the ammo available and probably CZ least fussy?  After that choice is personal preference.

Had i not found the 1417 i would have has the Tikka 22lr

Yes I remember and at the same price I think it's a tough and personal choice; but your annie is preferable in .22lr. New Annie at current price then its a T1X for me. I narrowed it down to CZ455 stainless and T1X .17HMR. Had both in .22lr to compare. T1X won and CZ455 stainless is gone. Now have 2 T1X's and not disappointed.

  4. I have a quad and just got the T1X. Cant fault either. Still early days for T1X but jumped out the box shooting 1/2moa at 100yds so happy. I think its best bang for £500 right now if happy to stay with factory stock. Quad has been a good work horse but the switch barrel thing hasn't worked for me hence the new T1X and so have a .17HMR barrel to sell.

It surely wouldn't make economic sense.~Andrew

Yeah I got that wrong and perhaps I should make it clearer. I am about to buy a .17HMR and it will be another T1x as I think it is best bang for budget. Now I have thought about it - Given the option of an Annie 64 for the same money I think I would choose the Annie?

I have a .22lr T1X and like all these here have upgraded the stock - mine being a chassis. This has doubled the investment and is now approaching the cost of the very nice 64 MSR silhouette on here. I think I shoot better with the upgrade but the T1X is no more accurate than the factory stock. Going back to the OP with 2 options I don't think the T1X is outstanding and maybe he should look at Anschutz - unless happy with factory stock then it is good value possibly.

I bought an Anschutz 1417  deluxe stock in mint condition & with the scope, spare 10 shot mag, quality sling & Mod, it was cheaper than a new Tikka  ( sans mod, scope, sling )with plastic stock. I am well pleased every time i pick it out of the cabinet

Very nice please post how you get on - just to clarify used mint Anschutz 64 plus used scope etc for same money as new tikka t1X new scope etc the same like for like does sound like a good deal but interested to know who would swap a T!X for an Annie 64 or vice versa? That's a question I could not answer for sure.

Are they outstanding or just the same as the rest.

I'm an avid 22lr fan and love my CZ452 varmint and subsonic ammo.

As any of you compared the two..??

Anschults has always been recognised as one of the best..

I do really like the tikka and it's concept.

    Thoughts please 👍

    Same as rest.

Did you get your T1X mounted up? ~Andrew

Morning Andrew. Yes the mdt lss is on my T1X. Now waiting for a change in weather to see what it can do. First try in awful conditions produced much the same results as factory plastic stock. Noticeable improvement in handling.

Have you found the ideal action screw torque setting in an upgraded stock?

Reamers - there’s no issue asking your RFD to order the exact reamers spec you want and then holding it for you to only use on your builds

This is OK sure but not when I will be charged for the reamer in full for very likely a one-off barrel; then its not really my reamer and available to be used for others - then I have an issue and stopped a build right there.

You called it. The CCI SubSonics had one round in 10 go supersonic and hit about .4" higher than the POA.  Otherwise, grouping was about .4 inches CTC. Federal Ultra Match (RWS) shot as well as i could, putting 8 or 9 of 10 into a bitty hole at 50 yards. The KRG stock was very comfortable to shoot and the added weight helped with follow through.~Andrew

Hi Andrew. Thank you for feedback. Much the same results with CCI subs. I don't think we have Federal gold match here. Good shooting and I like what you have done with the T1X. UPS delivered my MDT LSS for my T1X today.

Will do. Went to the Cabela's store in the city yesterday to pick up a QD swivel attachment for the front and found some CCI Sub Sonic ammunition which has been a pretty solid performer in both of my T1Xs. (as well as others. YouTube) Since Cabela's seems to be phasing out shooting items -even in Montana- I bought the 400 rounds they had left on the shelf. I'll let you know how they work.~Andrew

Hi Andrew I look forward to seeing how they Work. I got the odd loud popping round with cci subsonic in 20" barrel t1x with sound moderator but decent accuracy otherwise.

I dare say there will be little if any difference to a good Sako Quad assuming yours is performing as it should and you have found an ammo it likes, the difference in the P94S is its build quality.

As for your fears of buying second hand which I can understand. Im quite well known in the rifle building world these days and selling you a rifle that didnt shoot wouldn't be good for an excellent reputation I have worked very hard to build. If you can shoot then you wouldn't be disappointed in this rifles accuracy. I found it preferred SK Standard and SK Match for best group accuracy but for rabbits I used Eley Subs and Ive regularly head shot rabbits at 100yds with a good rest and given still conditions.

I remember taking a young lad out shooting rabbits, he had bought a .17 HMR as his first rifle because his dad had told him .22LRs were only good for 50yds. His first rabbit was headshot at 92yds, his second at 98yds. It was a nice still summer evening so it was possible to push the ranges a bit. I think I also got one at 110yds that evening, all of these were ranged and then dialled for with an 8-32x Sightron.

If I keep reminiscing like this I can see me ending up keeping her! 😁

Thank you Big Al. Its a nice looking rifle and very tempting.

  13. I have an Anschutz 54 action 1427 Biathlon .22lr bolt action rimfire rifle I would like to sell. The barrel has been shortened to 15" and is 1/2"unf threaded for a sound moderator. Apart from that everything else is original. These are a magazine fed match rifle capable of great accuracy and much like a newer 1710 but for less money. Biathlon target stock with magazine holder in butt and accessory rail under/on side of fore end, 11mm scope rail, adjustable light Anschutz trigger. Included is original 5 round biathlon mag converted to take 10 and another 10 round Anschutz magazine plus a single shot adapter. £450

I invested in a Weihrauch HW 66 Jagd-Match.  I rifle I absolutely love.  Not cheap, but there again, I'm a brand tart / can afford certain things.  I sold a "cheap crappy" Howa 1500 .223 for the 17H.  My Howa shot bugholes.

    WHAT A MISTAKE.

The .17H was quiet.  Moderated very well.  No recoil.  No "feel".  Shot into 1MOA with the ONLY available round out there pretty much - Hornady 17gn Vmax.  I've never had a rifle that shot into 1 MOA.  0.3 to 0.7 perhaps but not 1MOA.  I don't reload.

I got suckered by the American bullshit.  50 rounds in, I sold it and went back to .223.

Pissed me off as I like fast little pills.  Cost me money but IMHO, it's not a 200 yard fox round through a windy valley perm.

    17 Rem, 20 Tac, .204, .222 anything but .17H

Much the same experience and agree with this totally. If it shoots like a .223 then why not use a .223?

I may need a new sak mod as mine had seen Alot of thousands of shots and may not be working as efficient as it should/did, Ive got another mod I could try instead to find out. I've been tempted to by a stumpy

Sak can be px'd directly with Jackson rifles 'like for like' or Atec wave mods and probably others.

Hi. I guess this is London Transport if on the underground. Is there metal detectors or security these days looking for knives? I am out of touch as long time since visiting London but I don't think I would not risk carrying a concealed firearm and ammunition on underground. How many here have done so - I would be interested to know.

  17. I have an unused MDT LSS chassis for a Rem 700 short action total as new in the box. This chassis uses AICS type mags and includes action screws.  No point in me keeping it as I sold my .223 before it turned up and the silly lump of a barrel on my 20 practical wont fit without modification which I just don't fancy doing. £300 including the postage to a UK address. Thank you.

  18. I have had both and still have 17hmr. Niche?  Don't know really but a question on hmr always gets negative feedback. Hornet was useful when lack of hmr ammo. Reloading can replicate hmr/wsm or better it and at same cost. Good factory ammo but cost has increased and low stock levels in rfds. Performance compared to factory 55gr 223. So why not have a 223 as factory ammo can be bought for less? Plus more suitable for range. Hmr works with 16" barrel on a lighter frame so nice package to carry, more choice of rifles, higher magazine capacity , easier to moderate with smaller mod and deemed suitable for more land. Bulk deals on ammo available and stocked by most rfds. Although sometimes not a choice of brand,  i think originally they were made by one manufacturer and all give adequate accuracy in a bog standard cz. Probably missed something but i think hmr is OK just not for every body.
