  1. I wondered what you were shooting. They don't get much of a let up around here, shepherd doesn't give hungry vixens with cubs a free pass with lambs about.

As you say, if you get 500 out of it that's still a lot of foxes. As long as it doesn't break the bank...life's too short :D

Will you re-barrel 6WSM again when its shot out dyou think, or try something else/another 'over-bore'?

  2. I imagine Wildcat is aware of the relevant firearms legislation. I've bought spares from them in the past after driving over a mod - the last time I needed something I was told what I wrote above, they weren't sending bits to individuals anymore as they were aware that it was open to abuse (I've a vague recollection licensing had been involved but I cant find the email reply I received now so I may have dreamt that bit hence I didn't include it above).

Give them a buzz and let us know what they say, end of the day they can do what they like...

Its a modular moderator made up of components, why would people be taking the urine by purchasing all parts required to make a complete one, nothing illegal in doing so, only breaking the law  if one is used on a firearm and that is not already on ticket.

Why would you buy the parts to make a complete mod, rather than buy a complete mod from an RFD, apart from in order to circumnavigate licensing I mean?

Someone gets a visit from Plod and is found with a mod they don't have a slot for - 'I bought the bits from Wildcat and made it' - what interest is there for Wildcat to put (keep) themselves inline for the scrutiny that would attract?

Mine is used August to March each year ....

'Used' - I imagine the majority of deer rifles for e.g. are used 8 months a year, or more - but in the majority of cases (i.e. recreational stalkers) are probably only fired a handful of times. Kirby Allen's 6/338 would probably last a lot of stalkers a life time!

What's your barrels round count to date out of interest? If yours is doing well it must be a good bit of steel, assume youre using Reloader17/RS60 from your notes; the throat and first few inches of my 6XC barrel looked wasted after <1k warm-ish rounds with RS60, still shoots good enough for its intended use, but would win any BR comps 😂

Is this a case of them having got too big for their boots and now not wanting the ongoing responsibility that is being translated as "aggravation" when it should actually be "customer service" and on the back of the customers and their trade that has got them to where they are in business.

No, my understanding is that people were taking the piss and trying to buy complete mods in parts, it got to the point where it was blatantly obvious and Wildcat decided it wasnt in their best interest to continue selling spares...I image they'll still send you some o-rings, however.

I watched a couple of YouTube videos today one being the vudoo verses the 457 MTR and they wasn't too good at 150yds..

I've been pondering a custom .22 build (probably on a Rim-X), but tbh the more I watch/read online, the more I think it'd be a waste of cash; I like nice things, but until ammo catches up with other .22 developments like posh actions and fast twist barrels, its a real hard sell ;s

What picatinny rail base is the best, is Area 419 rail worth the extra cost, over the rails with the set screws on top

I have several A419 picatinny rails, on Tikka's and a 457 - their stuff never disappoints. The 30MOA built into the picatinny rails on the .22's are a useful elevation addition for longer range rimfire. I forget how far I can dial on my Tikka, I think the Recon has 120MOA of elevation...

  8. I have a non-matching 1942 K98 that I'm quite attached to. Its been with a fairly well-known historic rifle chap for conversion to long side rail sniper config using the Accumount repro LSR mounts available for the K98s and a 20s/30s vintage Kahles 4x optic.

I know he farms out the machining/fitting of the mount to the receiver to some old chap. A couple of weeks ago he emailed to say the the machinist chap had reported that the receiver was 'glass hard' and that no cutters were touching it. He wanted my authorisation to try to 'fix' this by annealing the receiver (as its way away from the locking lugs), saying it would probably leave some discolouration but was the only way forward, to which I agreed.

He's been in contact again today, saying he's thought about it some more and wants written authority from me to undertake the annealing, waiving any liability for cost of repair or replacement should the process damage the rifle. Alternatively he will just bill me for the service and return the rifle, which is what I have elected for.

Question to those who know metallurgy/machining type things - should I give up with the sniper build (my eyes aren't getting better and I really struggle with the Mauser irons, hence going for the scope fit, as the 4x mag will enable me to enjoy the rifle a lot more and for longer!), or am I likely to find someone else who's likely to be able to complete the work (recommendations welcome!), preferably without turning it into wall art?

    Cheers
    Rich

  9. Best is completely dependant on use and any other personal requirements; if youre going to sit gun on the bonnet of your truck and snipe foxes at 300 yards+ then a big 75mm unit that weighs a ton but has high base mag would be 'best'. If you're trudging about fields whacking bunnies at 100-150 yards with a rimfire then personally something smaller and lightweight would be preferable.

Just wondering about the above rifle scopes I have been looking at them for a while and wondered if anyone uses or has any knowledge of this brand they come with ten year warranty so that’s a good start but what would they be like with n/v add on I currently have a sightron stac any thoughts.

Have had Stryker 4.5x30 and 5x50 since they came out, cant fault them for the cash. Both work with rear addons in my experience, this was NV007 on the back of the 5x50 https://youtu.be/JmJqQblcI9A

My understanding is the .222 magnum is obsolete and brass not available. >204 ruger brass is and very easy to neck up to .224 with redding type s die. The case is slightly larger

Nosler still make 222 rem mag brass, possibly others who also make 204R - but as you say, easy to form from readily available 204 stuff. Must be able to get reamers from somewhere?
