  1. I'll reply, no i haven't heard of them.

But i've heard of aim sport predator, as i use one on my 6.5CM.

You can buy different threaded bushings for different threaded rifles, but the stainless steel bushings are not cheap at £40 a go..........

But I've used my 6.5CM mod with and without the Predator, and you can certainly tell the difference... Not cheap, but in my opinion worth the cost..

Although, you must do your research, as some of them do not sit squarely on the rifle and can cause bullet/moderator strikes, that cause chaos with accuracy...

Mine is fine but others have not been so lucky.

    Just one opinion...

    Cheers

    Well said David.

All this holier than thou bullshit gets tiresome.

Each to their own ! Growing up in Ireland I thought I had experienced sectarianism..........then I became a shooter in the UK and realised I had seen nothing yet !

90% of my shooting is competitive, be it CSR or the NRA run matches a few times per year. The rest is vermin and deer stalking.  I dont particularly enjoy "plinking" but would not dream of looking down on those who enjoy it. Or claiming that my way of enjoying my hobby is superior / is "Gods way"  :-/

Crack on and enjoy your shooting - be it unsupported or off a bipod, 100 yards or 1000 yards, F-class or CSR, airsoft or airgun, camo or leather etc etc etc

And if you have nothing good to say about your fellow shooters choice of shooting, how about saying nothing at all !!

Spot on! Each to their own, as has already been said!

    .223

Found it deadly accurate and very dependable. Has a wide range of loadings to take care of everything from long range corvid to foxes and munties. Barrels last a hell of a long time, looked after. Cheap to reload too which was the clincher for me.

    +1.

I loved my .204 Ruger, but as you would, "prefer to stick to factory ammo" it would have to be the .223 all day long. Always available in various types, bullets and so forth.

Thanks - I had considered the custom route but a fairly significant issue for me would be finding a LH action I imagine.

I also like the simplicity of an off-the-shelf option, although granted your custom route has evidently paid dividends with the ability to fit a much longer barrel.

Granted the Swede wasn't created for target use and has an excellent rep as a hunting round, however it was developed for a military application and I believe is looked on favourably on account of its accuracy.

Thanks for the above - I'm always skeptical of the "latest great thing" and I'd guess that the short action compatibility doesn't matter for most of us on this side of the pond, unless you're allergic to longer bolt strokes.

That said having run through all the load data on the Vihtavuori website the CM seems to be quite a bit more efficient than the Swede (around 10% on aggregated load data, I'm guessing because of the latter's greater case volume); which rightly or wrongly suggests to me greater barrel life for the CM.

I've yet to compare the load data from the .260, however I think this is a bit less efficient than the CM too, while it seems to be falling out of favour on this side of the pond. There's a lot of hype surrounding the CM currently but that of course is no guarantee of longevity. It does seem to be perhaps the most well-rounded and appealing of the "middling" 6.5mm cartridges though, and seems to have been fairly widely adopted so I think once the hype has died down it will still be carried by its legitimate merits.

Thanks - I read through Part 1 of of Laurie's epic last night and am picking through part 2 now. Interesting stuff, if somewhat complex in terms of all the variants available. I thought the Scandinavians were unique in their adoption of the high-SD 6.5mm rounds, but evidently they were investigated by a lot of Governments at the end of the 19th century.

I too saw the T3 and was a little tempted, although as you suggest IMO the 20" barrel is a bit on the short side. That aside though I could still stick a GRS stock on it and have change from the price of a Sporter.. although somehow this doesn't appeal as much.

You're correct about the action lengths so the stocks could indeed be swapped around; presuming the bottom metal / mag formats are the same.

Thanks - I thought similar. I'm happy with the 20" barrel on the .223 but if going larger I'd definitely want the longer tube.

Ta - that sounds like a lot of gun! I bet the weight brings benefits during use though. Is there anything you don't like about it?

You're right, the extra weight was appreciated when shooting at distance.

As regards to negatives, i can only think of 2 and i only suffered the one. The magazine bluing wears off very quickly, and if you forget to wipe it over with a lightly oiled rag after a days shooting, it goes orange very quick. Which i found out after one cleaning session after a few days in the cabinet...

The other is something along the lines of how the shoulder is cut, when the muzzle is screw-cut for a moderator. Some moderators, (even when screwed on correctly) go out on concentric. Causing bullets to strike the baffles, and the obvious poor grouping that goes with it. I use an Aim-Zonic Predator and have had no issues. However, there is another member on here who bought the same gun and mod as me as he had some right problems. I believe he changed moderators, and all was well after that. He's VarmLR, incase you need to give he a pm. He knows more about it than me. I must admit, even with the mag rusting, and the all up weight, i love my TAC 1, and don't see myself getting rid of it any time soon!

    Cheers

It seems to be fine Chaz.  I keep the gun cabinet liberally stocked with silicon bags and use acf50 to wipe surfaces down before putting away.  My mag bluing has worn at contact points but that's pretty normal for most metal mags so not a concern.  Barrel is fine as is action and bore.

Cheers Paul. My own fault for forgetting to oil it... I'll have mooch for this acf50

    Cheers.

  6. I've noticed the bluing on my Tikka TAC 1 magazine isn't  holding up well, quite a bit has worn of to bare metal already... After shooting it a couple of weeks ago, I got home, cleaned/oiled it and put it away. I took the magazine out of the cabinet a couple of days ago, and to my horror the magazine had large orange spots of rust on it. It was only very light, and was easily removed with a worn out scourer and some oil. Granted it was my fault for not wiping it over with my lightly oiled rag. But i'd expect the bluing to last a lot longer! Not sure what to do now. Whatever i do to it regarding finish, it will just wear off again after use.

VarmLR, Hows your mag holding up?

  7. No point buying it. As once the Spineless UK/Jock Government have filled every bit of green area left for immigrants to live, they will just compulsory buy most of the Island and build houses on it to house even move foreigner. They won't be happy until every part of the UK is grey with concrete and speaking foreign languages.

I've seen so much of my local so called local 'greenbelt' land around my local area turned into housing.

I've no interest in reading Corbyn loving naive replies, so don't bother replying.....

Chaz, you will love 6.5 Creedmoor. I'm  not sure that you'll stick with VvN15 though. I'm just working up some loads using IMR4350 and will put results up shortly. Everybody in't US raves about H4350 but it is unicorn droppings here. IMR is made by the same Australian mill and is supposed to be identical, but there is no  end of boring debat in the forums on this.

    Good luck--enjoy!

I'm also dubious about the powder too lenteped. But with a lot of the popular powders being stopped next year due to new rules, i had to go with something i could get. I'm reliably informed IMR are not similar in most cases to Hodgdon's. Although ive since learn't of a few like N550 being suitable for the 6.5CM, but i was put off due to it being a double base powder. I don't wan't a barrel burner.                                                                                          Cheers.

  9. Sorry for my lack of knowledge on Steiner!

I did have a look through them at the same time i looked at the Vortex, and i couldn't see any difference. But then again i didn't have my glasses on!

I can't ever see me needing more than 1 10 round mag for my Tac 1...

As for the Aim Sport Triton Predator mods coming loose, i've found a few do after a certain amount of shots. I regularly test the fit of my mod, whether hunting or target shooting. Probably a bit of OCD......

  10. Sounds gorgeous chaz, shame can't access photos let us know how you get on mate.

What a pain. First time i've used photobucket in a while, i'll have to sort that...

Do you know if "we" can only post small pics on here still? Or maybe how others have overcome the photobucket rip-off issue?

    Cheers

    Chaz.

Edit - Just had a go at editing it. You should see my sexy slipper in the photo?

  11. I got a call to say my new TAC 1 in 6.5CM was ready for collection, and i couldn't wait. So yesterday off i went on my hour + or so drive to my favourite RFD. I needed the gun and a few bits, but got totally carried away! Not like me... I usually stick to a list i make before i leave to keep me in check, as i'm like a kid in a sweet shop!

But on this occasion i didn't, and when i arrived the line between what i need, and what i'd like got a tad blurred... Much to the pain of my wallet! I go over a little now and again, but who doesn't? But yesterday, i just couldn't help myself. By the time i'd finished i was looking at a bill of well of 3 grand! I'm glad, they were good enough to take a large amount of ammo i had bought for another gun back, and take a rim-fire as part exchange. It eased the pain a little...

I'm very impressed with the quality of the TAC1 though, and i forgot it was a folding stock for a while, as it felt so sturdy. The bolt is as smooth as my other T3 in .223 Rem. I was also pleased to see a muzzle break included, and that the metal mag was a 10 shot and not the 5 shot i thought it was.

Also my first Vortex scope, and in 1st focal plane. But the reticle is amazingly fine, even on x24 mag.

I would have liked an illuminated dot in the center, but that was a jump of cash too far. Especially as i didn't even intend on buying a scope yesterday anyhow! I knew i needed one as my Leupold VX-L only goes up to x14, i think.... And after all, i did buy the rifle long range varminting, deer, and for long distance range work. At some point anyhow....

I could have had a Steiner scope with a 34mm tube and illuminated reticle, but i've never even heard of them, so i wasn't going to go solely on the RFD owner. Especially without my own research before hand, despite trusting him a lot. And again it was another hike in price to...

Some nice Leupold steel mounts, and i believe a Vortex "Riser".

And despite a lack of responses regarding anyone's knowledge of the Aim Sports Triton Predator Moderator, i went ahead and bought 1. Not cheap, but only the outer tube is a soft textured coated alloy, the rest is high grade stainless steel.

I bought a box of Hornady 140 grain ELD Match, to be going on with, and to get some basics on possible loads with the used Hornady brass with Viht N150 before i start on the Lapua brass. I bought some more Federal Gold Match SR Primers, but forgot a box of large rifle primers, for the Hornady brass. Doh!

So i'll have to pop to my local, not so good RFD to get a box.

Also have to put my Lee de-capping die stem in my pillar drill, to reduce the pin from 2mm to 1.5 for the Lapua brass.

I just hope the picture is viewable. Fingers crossed!

    Cheers

  12. You need to add a stage - case dying in my food dehydrator (otherwise used to make jerky) which does the job very well and leaves no watermarks.

DW58, could you share the details of the make and model of the dehydrator you use. Sound very handy!

    Cheers.
