I think you mean the former has higher velocity and is theoretically harder on barrels as RS52 is a double based powder, whereas N140 is a single base.

To the OP, both of those powders are very good. I’d also consider adding N150 and RS62 in the options too. Both single base, both readily available and both work well with heavier bullets as they’re slightly slower burning.

That's right- got my former and latter the wrong way round.

I'll edit my post to save any future reader from confusion.

Just had a look at the Jelen video - yep, very similar to that but without need to go poking around in there with your fingers or change gloves etc.

    Style of forceps below...

Those look like a Lane  1 into 2 tissue forceps/clamp with box joint.

Not to be confused with Lane’s dissecting forceps nor Lane’s bone-holding forceps.

  3. I had this problem with a new rifle. I carefully ran a die over the threads, which removed a tiny amount of metal, and my 1/2UNF Ase Utra fitted fine thereafter.

I'm certainly no engineer/gunsmith (the tap and die set were from Aldi, bought on a whim years ago!) so I suspect someone more experienced would have no problem.

If things went wrong, you're looking at shorten and recutting anyway.

  4. I only have a lowly “AR” straight-pull in .223Rem, Wylde chamber, so loaded to “AR mag” length. It has 1:8 twist barrel and I’ve been impressed with 77gr SMK, TMK, Scenar and Nosler Custom Comp. 73gr ELD-M not so good. 75gr A-max etc off the cards as can’t be loaded deep enough to mag-feed in an AR.

23.8-24.2gr N140, Varget, RS52 all worked well, with velocity and accuracy increasing in that order. 77SMK and Nosler CC virtually identical drop/drift. 77TMK marginally better on both counts  and accuracy. Best groups of 5 are 0.2-0.3MOA (NB straight-pull!), typically/normally sub 0.5MOA. In my rifle, all three bullets shoot to same POI at 100m, so long as N140/Varget/RS52 are used in the charge range above. So easy!

The only downside is the diminutive “splash”  of missed shots when shooting steels.

Since you are unconstrained by mag length (to an extent, so wider bullet choice) and have an AI version and longer barrel, you should have greater flexibility to tune a better long-range load; 900m is possible, ask Laurie!

  6. I use my Marlin GSBL 45-70 for deer and range.

It can be downloaded for range use, if needed.

Homeloading is the way to go with 45-70; loads of info online about pinking loads.

I have a scope on mine (long eye relief) with QR mounts so I can switch to the peep/ghost ring if needed/fancied.

Incidentally, there is a Marlin 45-70 for sale on Stalking Directory at the mo- short and threaded with a muzzle brake. If I didn't have mine, I'd be tempted.
