Something like this - the Area 419 Maverick? Seems like it would be ideal for PRS, I wouldn't like to stalk with it!

    Looks very suspect!

Did you see at 09m30s (and after) he uses the rear bag (held by his left hand) to block the rearward movement of the pistol grip.

The rifle comes to a jarring halt rather than the slide-to-a-stop in the preceding tests.

Like I said: beware the snake oil peddlars/marketing guff.

  2. It's a steep learning curve being a juvenile fox. This one turned-up in our garden, with one of the farmer's lovely Harlequin ducks in its mouth.

It then fought with both our cats!

Luckily the cats seem unharmed, though both were wired afterwards.

I had to shoot it- I was convinced one of the cats was going to get killed, the way the fox tossed them about. No idea why they didn't run/climb. Waiting for a safe shot was nerve-wracking as they were tangled-up half the time and running around the next. My son was watching nervously through the window- he was on a zoom lesson with his music teacher who could hear the yowling!

Farmer and his wife let me have the duck and kindly disposed of the fox.

You're really not comparing apples with apples here, to be fair to the little HMR. I sold my first HMR, bought a 17H, and have since bought 2 more HMRs 😜

Shooting 50 rabbits a night at 50-150 yards with NV or thermal I still think the HMR is hard to beat. If you cant get that close, shoot in difficult conditions or regular whack foxes while shooting rabbits then fair enough, something with more ooomph makes sense. Tbh, I rarely use my 17H (usually a few times a year on corvids in summer), 204 comes out every time instead for fox, although I completely agree that the 17H flops gingas over no problem.

I don’t shoot rabbits in that volume, otherwise I’d probably be more inclined to use the 17HMR.

  4. I ditched the 17HMR and went to the 17Hornet. No regrets. It’s everything I’d hoped the 17HMR would be but wasn’t.

Maybe the 17HMR ammo has improved since I used it last but even when working as advertised it doesn’t compare to a 25gr V-max at 3400fps (3397fps@14C).

Reloading keeps costs down (especially the bulk 17gr for plinking, with sniff powder) but I will say that 17Hornet isn’t the most forgiving to reload for (small charges, small funnels, small everything!)

I use it for rabbits because the cliff edges, gorse-covered gullies and ridges around me don’t offer 22LR range shots and limited opportunity to stalk in.

If I’m knowingly after fox, I’ll take 204Ruger or 223Rem but should I encounter a fox while out with the 17Hornet, I know it’ll do the job.

  5. Lever-release v Lever-action

I had a call from an FEO (S Wales Police) today. He explained that they had realised their database did not distinguish between lever-action (legal) and lever-release (imminently "illegal"). He wanted to check if any of my three lever-action rifles were actually Lever-release.

This seemed specifically related to 45cal (in my case 45Colt and 45-70), rather than my 38/357mag.

Something to be aware of, in case confusion occurs in other forces.

  6. I'm probably wrong but that looks like a marketing gimmick.

A muzzle brake reduces recoil by redirecting high pressure, fast-moving gas.

A moderator cools and slows supersonic gas and dampens the pressure gradient (for want of a better term).

So if the moderator section is working, how can sticking a brake on the end do anything functional to reduce recoil.

As I say, I'm open to persuasion but at the moment I'm sceptical. If anyone knows of good data (not marketing/company propaganda) supporting this please share.

  7. I've got 2 Gen 1 PSTs, both have been reliable In many years of 4 seasons usage with utterly repeatable tracking (mainly CSR, so lots of dialling) and satisfactory optical quality.

I have a Gen 2 Crossfire which has so far been fine on a 308Win.

MRad reticle monocular has been fine.

I have a Diamondback Tactical on 22LR, no problems.

I bought a secondhand Strike Eagle 1-6x and it was blurred beyond about 60yds: it was replaced by return of post with a brand new one, which hasn't left the box (after checking it all worked.)

I haven't owned a "high end" vortex, so can't comment on them.

  8. My T3 groups well with Sierra Gameking, Prohunter and Speer BTSP 100gr bullets and Hornady 95gr SST.

However, the awful 90gr Sierra Gamechanger/Tipped Gameking were unstable at any velocity (within safe loadings).

Sierra screwed the pooch with the 6mm offering of this (over tough?) marketing dept bullet. They originally claimed it would stabilise in 1:10. That has quietly been revised after it became apparent it will not stabilise in many rifles with that twist (and is presumably marginal for many others, rather spoiling the high BC claims unless you have a fast twist barrel.)

I don't understand how Sierra got this so wrong.

    Sorry, noted.

284W and 7x64 tend to give not dissimilar results in terms of performance hence my interest in what people were doing with 284W and the ELD-M.

I was not about to advocate transferring load data between the 2.

    Scrummy

    No apology needed!

I load the 180ELD-M in a straight 284Win rifle. Furthest I've shot it is 1.4k and accuracy has been good enough to win one ELR comp.

Previously, I've noticed poor box-to-box consistency in weight and base-to-ogive of Hornady bullets so I used to stick to Sierra, Lapua etc. However, these ELD-Ms are proving consistent on both measurements (I still check, though.)

In my rifle they shoot best slightly jammed.
