Got myself an A-Tec moderator

I'd normally build my own but was a bit chicken to make

one for my 308. In my first attempt a homemade mody would have been heavy as hell.

The A-Tec isn't as clumsy and heavy as some others I have seen.

First I took it apart, cleaned it, greased threads and put it together.

Build quality is top, it would take me ages to make something like

that. Whats nice is that if a baffel would burn out it can be replaced.

First baffel is stainless, rest aluminium, that's how I make my own also.

After measuring barrel diameter I bored out the Delrin ring supplied with

0.01-0.02 mm play.

Grabbed bag with ammo and off to friends place with 100yd setup.

Weather was ok first, then wind crept up to gale force, but we had a bit

of shelter by the hedge.

Tried two leftover 165gr sst's that never shot well without mody

Next reliable Lapua 167 scenars factory load.

Then my friend had a go with the same round

and then my 155a-maxes 42gr H335

I'm by far not a target shooter and absolutely delighted with this rifle and

the moderator. I don't think I could shoot any better at this time with a laser.

We could shoot without earplugs and agreed it wasn't any louder than my friends

swift with a pes. Recoil was really tame, without the moderator my friend claims

my carbon stock feels like shooting an iron bar.

Hi Edi

You were not the only one to get their A-Tec mod this weekend. :P

I have managed to get the A-Tec mounted on the 270 Howa now it has come back from being Dura-coated. First impressions are that it is the equal to the T8 Reflex moderators in terms of noise reduction but it really does tame down the kick of the 270 not that I found the 270 that bad before, but now it is like shooting a 223 or 243 at the very worse. The extra weight of the A-Tec is not so great to prevent me from carrying the rifle on a sling barrel up. I culled my first beast with it and was not left with ringing ears so happy bunny so far.

Hi B-b,

how much did your zero change with the a-tec on?

On mine it went up 1-1,5" and 2" to the right.

The problem is that in a day shooting one might

want the mody on in the morning and then leave it in the car

when going into a hill. Which means putting a couple of clicks

into the scope without zeroing. Do you think that will work

reliably?

hi edi

personally i would not take the mod off, i would use it on the hill as well.

not having been on the hill, could you please enlighten me to y you would want to remove the mod.

but there is no reason y you can not do exactly as you described,as the A-TEC will return to zero every time you take it off and then replace it.(as long as you return the scope to it original settings that is)

and the mod has been properly fitted in the first place.

the amount your POA will move when fitting and UN fitting a mod will depend largely on how long your barrel is and how thick it is, all so it will alter the harmonics as well, so i doubt very much that to rifles will move exactly the same amount.(but they may be close,)

Well Col,

sometimes we would shoot the dawn close to farms,

with animals around, not much walking. Ideal for

the heavy rifle with mod, bipod. Later in the morning we could change

place and stalk up into the hills. 2-3 hours cralling up a hill one

would prefer very light equipment. Dont even take a jacket

along. Then I sometimes go after sika in dense cover and

need a handy rifle.

By right I should have 2 stalking rifles.

I never had problems with my 223 which held zero perfect every

time after my mody was taken apart and cleaned. So I think it should

work having two zero settings, with and without mod.

Hi Edi

One of my other rifles has a T8 fitted and I have marked the scope turrets with the positions to be used with the moddy fitted or not and I have had no problems with changing the POI.

How's the howa going for you?

I've just ordered one in 22-250

Hi Edi

Howa is doing fine they are a bit basic in some ways but work and are reliable, I keep thinking of trading one of them for a Sako but I like the 75 Finlite and they have stopped making them. For the price of a 85 you could re-stock, re-barrel and fit a aftermarket trigger unit in a Howa.

B-b,

basic is not bad, and just what i need.

Our shooting here is quite rough, i cry

over all the dings in my OU shotgun

which i had bought new 10 years ago.

I envy your scope, did you get the bdc added on

later or is it the precision hunter version.

I'm thinking of getting them on my zenith.

The scope is a standard S&B 3-12X50 Precison hunter with mili-dot reticule, cost twice what the standard rifle did, ;) still don't matter how straight your custom rifle can shot if you can't see it you can't shoot it. :P

That's it, zee schmidt is not cheap but possibly last longer than the rifle.

Went out for a sika last Saturday, but only came

across a few hinds, so no shot.

Back at the car we spotted a grey crow at 200yds.

Rifle was zeroed without moderator, so it was a good test

for the theorie. Clicked 4 left and 4 down which should get her

to moderator zero.

The a-max gave a nice smack.

How are the pair of you getting on with your new ATEC mods?

Hi Hoot,

the only unusual thing was when testing loads I tried

some standard remington 150gr sp through the moderator, group 3 touching.

In the past they would never shoot better than 1.5" without moderator.

I'd need to test that again another day to see if it wasn't a fluke.

Generally groups seemed a bit tighter with moderator.

I don't plan on using the moderator much when stalking, it would only be

if close to farm animals or houses.
