capt561921
Have been waiting a while now and my new .338 Accuracy International is soon to arrive. And wanted to ask what is the best load for the .338 Lap Mag ? Regards Rob
baldie
Its a very easy calibre to load for, and most things seem to shoot well. I,m currently using a 250 grain scenar, and federal primers, with 95 grains of vhit 570. This shoots under 1/2" at 100 yards. Its also good, from the limited tests i,ve ran, with the same powder, and scenar 300 grainers. Vhit 165 is also good. I stick to vhit, because its cheaper, pound for pound, than hodgdons. Ronin on here has several good hodgdons loads. If your up at warcop on saturday, you can have a poke with it.
sean c
I use 96.5grn of vit N570 under a 250grn scenar with cci primer gives me under .5" at 100yds. I tried RE25 but didn't get any results worth following up.
Ronin
94.5g of H1000 gives me sub .5 MOA and 2900 fps Will be trying some H4831SC tomorrow as I have only a 1lb of H100 left at the moment. Time to fire up quickload, to get a substitute weight.

Ronin
Rob 338's dont group..................... Not Been out today, slight L - R crosswind. All targets shot at 100 mtrs. Used my normal load of 94.5g H1000 (2900 fps) as "control" to make sure rifle and I were "on" Then shot another three at a different dot - yes there are three shots in this; Then tried a few different weights of H4831SC. Found that I need more powder, didnt have time for extensive testing but here's the results 86g - 2759fps 86.5g - 2805fps 87g - 2827fps, I pulled the last shot...... Looks like circa 88 grains of 4831SC will get me to 2900 fps easily. This is where the sweet spot is for the 250g SMK's in my rifle
Ronin
Just to add, the 250's were seated to SAAMI spec so they mag feed. They are actually jumping about 050" to the lands, my chamber is Min SAAMI spec match job, the AI AWSM will have MAX SAAMI chamber, however I have about 400 pieces of once fired RUAG brass going if u are looking for brass for your new addition?? Been fired in an issue AWSM so should have no problem in yours.......
casts_by_fly
Yikes! I can see why you stick with Vihta- the 1 kg tubs. At 95+ grains of powder, one pound doesn't last a night of reloading. Bring out the 8 lb tubs. Thanks, Rick

Ronin
Rob you will be able to caress it at Warcop this weekend and later in Powys in Nov Taking these to both: Surgeon XL 338 (barrel is a custom Pac Nor 9 twist) BAT repeater 6.5x47 (barrel is Lothar Walther 8 twist) They are as accurate as each other, however the 338 has the legs, usualy able to connect with a 4 inch plate at 800 mtrs with reasonable consistancy with it

How do you think the AI with 1 in 10 would do in .338 ?
Ronin
It will be fine with 250's, may not stabilise 300's. DS1 (David) on here has extensive knowledge of AI AWSM and just recently sold his 338, he may have better info for your new addition than I, I know another chap with an AWSM who you will meet in Nov. My own 338 is self built, to my spec, it works just fine
