Police Fitness Levels...are they going down?

With obesity levels on the rapid increase in this country, is it filtering through into the police?

I'm not that old, but can remember a few years ago very rarely seeing a 'porky plod'. Whereas recently over 1/4 I've seen have had a reasonable waist line....

I don't know if this is just due to my more rural location and laid back policing or an increasing reliance on technology instead of actually running after a criminal.

To be honest some of the bobbies on the beat I've seen recently, would probably have been in pieces after a 400 yard sprint or collapsed at the sight of a 6' fence!

This isn't exactly a direct criticism, but more an observation.

Has anyone else noticed this loosening of the belt?

The fitness test has dropped in recent years. The bleep test 5 years ago was to level 8.1. This is now somewhere in the region of level 4.6 just over a brisk walk. Very poor in my opinion.

Ratwhiskers you are right that there is no further requirement for a further fitness test throughout service unless the officer is in a specialist unit.

Its crazy but true.

But then again with the amount of paperwork involved in policing now days its not very often an officer is actualy in the position to have to run after any one..........
